Republican Briefs

Editor - Frosty Taylor or   Web Master John Strasser

Who Actually Owes Vets An Apology McCain Or Trump? “…On veterans’ issues, John McCain talks out of both sides of his mouth. This list of key votes (provided by Project Vote Smart) unequivocally shows McCain has either not voted or often voted in opposition to legislation affecting veterans, troops, reservists and their families. The worst scandal involving the Veterans Administration Hospital occurred in here in Arizona under John McCain’s watch resulting in needless deaths of military personnel awaiting care. John McCain has done everything in his power to block the release of information on American Vietnam era MIAs as evident in this shocking video by Vietnam Veterans Against McCain. It features veterans, U.S. Congressmen and knowledgeable staff. This equally stunning video shows John McCain stomping out of a congressional hearing after insulting Delores Alfond, chair of the National Alliance of Families, who spent her life seeking information after her brother was shot down over North Vietnam. McCain intentionally made sure all information was classified and made unavailable. Ask yourself, “Why?” It's John McCain, himself, who has the explaining to do.”

Congressman Paul Gosar: Your help is greatly needed to stop arbitrary boating restrictions proposed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on large portions of Lake Havasu. Government agencies like the Fish and Wildlife Service have continued to enact job-killing and unlawful regulations that cause severe harm to countless communities throughout the country.  My investigation into the latest proposed boating restrictions uncovered that they are not based on science or safety, but rather they are a backdoor attempt to limit recreational boating activities on the lake. If we do not stand together and fight this continued abuse of bureaucratic power, unelected and unaccountable government officials will continue to take more control of our lives. The economic livelihood of Lake Havasu City depends on the accessibility of the lake for all users. Numerous organizations and individuals have joined me in raised serious concerns and requested a 60-day extension of the comment period including: Lake Havasu City Mayor Mark Nexsen, Arizona Game and Fish Department, Lake Havasu Area Chamber of Commerce, Lake Havasu Marine Association, Mohave County Board of Supervisors  and 21 Bipartisan Members of Congress. The Fish and Wildlife Service is currently taking public comments on the draft recreational boating compatibility determination which aims to close significant portions of Lake Havasu to motorized boating activities. Send in your comments and help keep Lake Havasu open for all users! Email your comments to: Written comments may also be sent to: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Havasu National Wildlife Refuge, Attn: Draft Recreational Boating CD, 317 Mesquite Avenue, Needles, CA 92363. Get your comments in and oppose this flawed proposal that aims to close down more areas on Lake Havasu to recreational boating activities that include tubing, water-skiing, wakeboarding and fishing.

Congressman Paul A. Gosar statement after reported that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) will only extend the public comment period on proposed boating restrictions for Lake Havasu by 30 days and will not meet the 60-day extension request made by the Congressman and numerous other stakeholders:  “Even after more than one thousand passionate citizens showed up last week in Lake Havasu City in opposition to unjustified boating restrictions, the Service continues to blatantly ignore the will of the people. This type of tone deaf bureaucratic behavior has built an unprecedented level of distrust and frustration between the federal government and the American people. Furthermore, it is unbelievable that my staff and I had to find out about this shortened extension through a news report, especially as we just reached out to the Service yesterday to see if there were any updates. “Based on what I witnessed at the public meeting in Lake Havasu City, the agency should have scraped this terrible proposal and went back to the drawing board. Instead the Service appears hell-bent on forcing unwarranted boating restrictions down the throats of local stakeholders. If the Service really cared ‘about soliciting public input from all users’ then it would have met these users’ request and extended the comment period an additional 60 days. I will continue to do everything in my power to fight these misguided boating restrictions that are not based on science. Service officials can hide behind the curtain when it comes to public scrutiny, but they can’t hide from me.”

Congressman Paul A. Gosar after filing an amendment to the fiscal year 2017 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA)  that would strike language inserted as a result of an amendment offered by Congressman Ruben Gallego that aims to allow Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program recipients to serve in the United States Armed Forces . “NDAA should be about providing critical funding for our troops, not debating immigration policy. Sadly, open border advocates have once again put politics ahead of the needs of our men and women in uniform in attempting to enact President Obama’s lawless agenda. This shortsighted and unconstitutional effort will further reduce military opportunities for lawful American citizens and lawful immigrants who wish to serve at a time when the Pentagon is dramatically downsizing our total number of troops.  It’s time that we stop playing politics with the Defense Authorization and ensure that a provision meant to allow military readiness isn’t hijacked in order to provide backdoor amnesty to DACA aliens. Furthermore, there is no labor shortage and we are in the midst of eliminating 160,000 uniformed personnel positions over a nine-year stretch. Given this fact, it is wrong to prioritize enlisting illegal immigrants over Americans and legal immigrants that want to serve our nation.” Full text of Gosar’s amendment HERE.

US Sen Candidate Clair Van Steenwyk's response to Timothy Lee's statement: “has always had a collegial, cordial and professional relationship with (Van Steenwyk). Nary a cross word or even a frown has ever transmitted between us.”  5-10-16-briefs Mr. Lee is correct - we've always had a collegial, cordial and professional relationship, however Mr. Lee didn't run the meeting. It was run by an attorney and Bennett had stepped down and was not in attendance.  Ken had given enough time to present Issues & Policy + Q & A. It didn't happen; the person in charge said we'd have to wait as Robert Graham, who arrived later, was given time and he spoke for most of meeting, I received 3 minutes not 25 minutes initially given. The end came abruptly. Ron Gosselin is correct: it was the “worst meeting” he had attended and we were treated “rudely”. I'm not surprised at Mr. Lee's response of ("How dare you categorize me as rude when your factual basis is bumfuzzled.”), Mr Gosselin referred to treatment by the attorney not Mr. Lee. I believe Lee left meeting before my 3 minutes. I hope this clears this issue up. I realize it's not Politically Correct for a Candidate or campaign to complain about the behavior by some groups. I may be the only one not willing to sit back hoping some in the GOP will change, this is one of the reasons the GOP Establishment has lost the trust of many.  I am still waiting on LD 24 for the original time promised by Ken Bennett. Mr. Gosselin requests 25 minutes for reappearance promised to Van Steenwyk’s presentation / Q&A as previously scheduled by former LD 24 Chair Ken Bennett be kept. Contact Gosselin at 602-740-4165 or,

Frank Riggs, Former U.S. Congressman And Gubernatorial Candidate, on the reasons why a conservative can support Prop 123:

1)  The increased distribution level of 6.9% per year for the next 10 years is less than the 7%+ annual growth the State Land Trust averaged over the past 10 years.  The distribution level was set at slightly less than break-even so as not to tap the "corpus" or principal of the Trust.

2)  The state land trust has increased in value from $2.8 billion to $5.1 billion over the past five years, primarily because the accrued earnings have been retained, not distributed.  As Robert Robb, AZ Central/Republic columnist, put it recently: "In reality, Prop 123 mostly gives schools undistributed earnings they should have been receiving all along."

3)  The State Land Trust consists of 9.2 million acres valued at approximately $70 billion.  Only 1.7 million of the 10.9 million acres entrusted to the state at the time of statehood over a century ago have been disposed.  The Joint Legislative Budget Committee has opined that "Even with the higher distributions...the state land trust will grow by over $1 billion over 10 years."

4)  Prop 123 respects local control and decentralized decision-making.  Local school boards and charter school governing boards will decide how the increased funding is best spent.  They're closest to the school level and classroom, and most accessible and accountable to taxpayers and parents.  They're responsible for budgetary and spending decisions, from teachers to books and supplies, and from counselors to custodians and bus drivers.  A growing list of over 25 school districts have committed to increasing teacher compensation contingent on the passage of Prop 123.

Don't buy the oft-repeated fiction that Prop 123 "raids our kids' trust fund."  In reality, it's a common sense, fiscally responsible solution to the education funding lawsuit that distributes accrued, surplus earnings, not the principal of the trust fund, and is consistent with both conservative principles and current law.

State Treasurer Jeff DeWit: Proposition 123 is a raid on the Schools’ Permanent Endowment Trust Fund which was established by Congress at Arizona’s statehood.  It is a pool of money intended to grow for the benefit of educating Arizona schoolchildren forever.  We can spend interest, but we are never to spend principle, as this plan does in a BIG way.  Proposition 123 violates this Congressional requirement, and if passed, a new multi-year lawsuit will likely begin, further delaying funding for our schools.

The politicians are saying that this Trust is “underperforming our schools.”  This is incorrect.  The amount we spend on schools from the Trust is now the highest in Arizona history, roughly $100 million a year, and should double about every seven years.  Voting NO on Proposition 123 keeps this money for its intended purpose, benefiting our schools forever.  Saying yes cuts the trust fund by over a third, costs our schools Billions of dollars, keeps teacher pay at 50th in the country, raises property taxes, and creates a huge fiscal cliff in ten years that will hit hardworking taxpayers.

The Arizona Republic pointed out, this is merely a "scam" on the voters to make them think that this is free money, when in reality it comes at a very high price to our children, teachers, and taxpayers. Prop-123-arizona-legislature-state-land-trust

The public is also being told that Prop 123 is “more money for teachers.”  (no-requirement-prop-123-money-go-directly-classrooms) Prop 123 does the opposite, it is purposefully written to make it possible for the money to go to administrative raises without a single dollar going to a teacher or classroom.

Prop 123 will also increase Trust fund payouts to the State Hospital and State Prisons, among other non-school related spending increases.

Proposition 123 is LESS money for schools, and RAISES property taxes Quite frankly, if the Yes on 123 campaign was a business instead of a political campaign it would be guilty of fraudulent advertising.

Donald Trump's controversial campaign manager Corey Lewandowski will helm the presumptive GOP nominee's running mate search, the Washington Post reported.

Cruz-Floats-Restarting-Campaign-If-He-Wins-Nebraska On Glenn Beck's radio program, Ted Cruz floated the possibility of restarting his presidential campaign if he wins Nebraska's GOP primary Tuesday. But Cruz also said he does not think that will happen and brushed aside the idea of a third-party run He also demurred on supporting presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, arguing that there are still months to go before the party's convention and the ultimate general election. I.e. – I do what I want!

Sen Jeff Flake: If-We-Lose-Election-We-Should-Confirm-Merrick-Garland-Quickly One of the Republican senators who has met with Merrick Garland , President Obama ‘s Supreme Court nominee, says that he’d be a safe bet for their party if they lose in November. Read the full story

Open-Border Jeff Flake Demands Trump Go 'Weak' On Immigration “Out of touch globalist and Arizona Senator Jeff Flake wants Trump to water-down his tough immigration stance and be “more like Marco Rubio.”  In other words, Flake wants to keep the borders open and the cheap labor flowing in so his big money donors can operate their companies at the lowest costs possible.  He doesn’t give a damn about the American people, economically or safety wise. His comments are especially shameful being that he represents Arizona, a state ravaged by illegal immigration. Illegal aliens have robbed, carjacked, destroyed property, killed pets and livestock and trashed the dessert in Cochise County Arizona.  People like Flake and McCain have failed the good people of Arizona in order to keep their special interests happy and have even sponsored bills that ENTICE more illegal immigrants…”

Congresswoman Martha McSally on the passage of her bill, the Women Air Force Service Pilot Arlington Inurnment Restoration (WASP AIR) Act, in the Senate. “The WASPs were pioneering heroes and, today, we are one step closer to honoring them as they deserve,” said McSally. “I applaud Senator Ernst for her persistent leadership to get this bill passed in the Senate with minor, technical edits. Because of these changes, I will continue to work expediently to get the final version of this bill passed in the House, where it has seen unanimous support, and send it to the President’s desk.” On March 22, the House unanimously approved McSally’s bill 385-0. The Senate made technical changes to the legislation that did not alter its intent, requiring House passage again before the bill can be sent to the President. At the time of passage, McSally’s bill had nearly 200 bipartisan House cosponsors. Her efforts to fight for the WASP in Congress include leading a letter cosigned by over 50 bipartisan House members to the Acting Army Secretary, holding a Special Order discussion on the House floor, hosted a press conference with House and Senate lawmakers, and publishing numerous op-eds. Background - In 1942, General Henry “Hap” Arnold created the WASP unit with the intention of granting them full military status. 1,102 female pilots signed up for the WASP program, which ran from 1942 to 1944. Their missions included ferrying airplanes, training combat pilots, and towing airborne targets, and 38 WASPs died during their service. In 1977, Congress passed legislation retroactively granting active duty status to WASPs for the purposes of all laws administered by the VA, and in 2009, Congress awarded the WASPs the Congressional Gold Medal. Arlington National Cemetery approved in 2002 active duty designees, including WASPs, for military honors and inurnments. However, in March 2015, then-Secretary of the Army John McHugh reversed this decision.
