Republican Briefs

Editor Frosty Taylor    Web Master John Strasser

Firearms Expert Alan Korwin: “We passed a law in 2013 to stop exactly what she (Katie Couric) claims -- destruction of guns held by police -- a valuable public asset. And in this case, it is evidence of possible federal felonies.” …The new claim by Katie Couric’s documentary producer Stephanie Soechtig that guns she arranged to purchase in Arizona have been destroyed is in conflict with Arizona law that protects such public property once it is turned over to police. In a frantic effort to cover her tracks and “make good” on a failed attempt to paint gun owners in an ignorant light, Couric and her producer Stephanie Soechtig and team have apparently committed conspiracy and multiple federal felonies. Buying firearms privately without paperwork or background checks across state lines violates federal statute (18 USC §922 et seq.). GOP Presidential candidate Donald Trump: First, I would like to thank the people of Montana, South Dakota, New Mexico, New Jersey and California. I am honored by your support. Together, we accomplished what nobody thought was possible – and we’re only getting started. Tonight, we close one chapter in history and begin another. Our campaign received more primary votes than any GOP campaign in history. This is not a testament to me, but a testament to all the people like you who believed real change is possible. We have received wide spread support, winning 37 states from New Hampshire, to Alabama, to California and everywhere in between. You have given me the honor to lead the Republican Party to victory this fall, and I won’t let you down. I will make you proud of your party, our movement and most importantly, our country. To everyone who voted for me throughout this campaign: thank you. My message continues to resonate and I know that my vision for the country is one that will make us stronger and better than ever before. Now more than ever we must be smart, we must be vigilant, and we must be tough. Every day moving forward – we must work to bring about all of the changes necessary to put an end to the destruction caused by the current administration. I am going to be the best jobs President God ever created! We are going to revitalize our economy, rebuild our infrastructure, repeal and replace ObamaCare, strengthen our military, defeat ISIS, end illegal immigration and put America first! This is a movement - it’s about common sense and doing the right thing. I’m going to take care of people. I’m going to make sure this country comes first. As Americans, we have incredible potential and I am the leader this country needs to Make America Great Again. Thank you again for your support.

Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Reince Priebus and Co-Chair Sharon Day issued the following statement on tonight's election results: "Hillary Clinton's long struggle to the finish line is nearly complete thanks to the Democrat Party’s rigged system that empowers unelected, unbound super delegates. In a contest that was supposed to be a mere formality, Clinton suffered over twenty losses and was driven further to the extreme left by a 74-year old Vermont socialist who had never before run as a Democrat.
“Tonight, Donald Trump officially secured the requisite number of pledged delegates to be the Party’s presumptive nominee and built on his historic number of votes in the GOP Primary. Donald Trump sets up a clear contrast between Clinton who was anointed by Democrat insiders, and a successful businessman who offers a new path to get our country back on track.
“Clinton will now attempt to pivot to the general election under the shadow of a looming FBI investigation into her reckless conduct at the State Department while facing an electorate that overwhelmingly finds her unlikeable and untrustworthy. Too much is on the line in this election to hand the White House over to someone as untrustworthy and hypocritical as Hillary Clinton, who is committed to the same failed Obama agenda which has made our nation less prosperous, less safe, and less free.”
"It's a shame that the first female nominee of a major party will also be the first standard-bearer to be under FBI investigation," said RNC Co-Chair Sharon Day. "Hillary Clinton has been a disaster for women. Her actions speak louder than her words, whether it be paying women less than men or her scandal-plagued foundation taking millions of dollars from countries with dismal human rights records. We can and must do better than Hillary Clinton.”

The Arizona Republican Assembly (AzRA) is not only the fastest growing Republican group in Arizona, it is also considered the more conservative wing of the Republican Party. Membership includes over half of the Republicans in the current Arizona Legislature.  The AZRA Scorecard is a great guide to who is doing what on your behalf in the Legislature, and can be accessed from the top menu:  The Legislators are given a score based on over 230 bills proffered in the 2015-16 session.

It Appears The Dem Might Be Challenging LD7 GOP House candidate Candace Bedogy-Begay’s nominating petitions. The Dems claim she doesn’t have enough valid GOP signatures to meet the 294 signature requirement.

Former Marine Bill Heuisler: He has panicked, but the barrage of (John) McCain ads makes me angry. For political-psychological drama McCain’s hit pieces against Kelli Ward are gloomy, sloppy & amateurish. We expected something more interesting – maybe a reasoned argument or a self-deprecating joke. But just like he did last time, McCain’s just throwing money and dirt. McCain is spending a million dollars through his favorite Super PAC to overwhelm a nice, normal woman with dollars again and to fool all of us silly Republican sheep again. Predictable and insulting, but this time McCain’s lousy logic and childish insults (a military wife is anti-military?) will only reinforce our contempt for him. See reference

State Law Requires That In Order For The Presidential Nominee to appear on the ballot, the party chairman must submit its presidential electors’ nomination papers to the Secretary of State’s office at least 90 days before the primary election.  Arizona’s Green Party failed to submit its presidential electors’ by the June 1st deadline.  Consequently, their nominee will not appear on the General Election Ballot. “In consultation with the Attorney General’s office we could not identify any statutory authority to waive that deadline or accept late nomination papers,” said Secretary Reagan.  “The only remedy seems to be through the courts where a judge could direct our office to print the name of the Green Party nominee on the ballot." The President of the United States is selected by presidential electors through the Electoral College.  The Electoral College is the body that formally casts votes for the president and vice president.  The only way for any presidential candidate to be represented on the general election ballot is through those presidential electors.   The meeting of the electors takes place on the December 19, 2016. The General Election will be held on November 8, 2016 with early voting beginning October 12th.

Military Declares War on Hillary… Former General Openly Demands Jail Time A retired general who was George W. Bush’s undersecretary of defense for intelligence says that Hillary Clinton must be indicted after the names of CIA-protected agents were found on her private email server. In an interview with Breitbart News Radio, retired Army Gen. Jerry Boykin said that “lives have been endangered” by Clinton’s irresponsibility, which should be “punishable by jail time. What Hillary Clinton has done, I can tell you, it is … punishable by jail time. I think ultimately she’s going be indicted. She has to be. This cannot stand,” Boykin said during the Saturday interview.

A New Book By A Former Secret Service Agent in Bill Clinton’s White House paints Hillary Clinton as a moody, rude, often-violent presence that agents thought they may need to protect the president against, the New York Post reports. Gary Byrne, a 29-year veteran of military and federal law enforcement, called the Democrat presidential front-runner “erratic, uncontrollable and occasionally violent” in his new book, “Crisis of Character: A White House Secret Service Officer Discloses his Firsthand Experience with Hillary, Bill, and How They Operate.” The book is set to be released on June 28, but it’s already shot to the top of the Amazon charts based on pre-orders alone. And for Hillary Clinton, that’s a very, very bad thing.

Taxpayers-Billed-For Obama Taxpayers were billed more than $300,000 for costs associated with president Barack Obama’s visit to Hiroshima, Japan, to deliver a speech calling for a “world without nuclear weapons” at the site of the atomic bomb attack that ended the second world war. The tab includes $134,569 for accommodations for a foreign ministers meeting for the G7 summit in Hiroshima, $5,487 to rent a conference room, and $7,002 for “POTUS working space” in the Grand Prince Hotel. Contracts for hotel rooms include $15,251 at the Rihga Royal Hotel and $36,241 at the Grand Prince. Rooms for the Secret Service cost $3,625, and another conference room was booked for $4,164. Numerous contracts were signed for the president’s motorcade, including $19,340 for transportation in Hiroshima, and several “urgent” contracts signed last month, costing taxpayers $19,175, $19,103, and $7,123. Trucks were also rented for the trip, costing $4,025. More

A Bipartisan Group Of 18 House Members – Led By Reps Trent Franks (R-AZ) and Betty McCollum (D-MN) – wrote to Speaker Paul Ryan urging him to prioritize religious freedom in India during his meeting tomorrow with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, especially in light of ongoing violence and harassment against religious minorities, including Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, and Sikhs. “We respectfully request that during your meetings with the Prime Minister, the ‘shared value’ of the fundamental right of religious freedom will be a priority in your conversation. Religious minority communities – including Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, and Sikhs – have endured ongoing violence and harassment for decades in India, and continue to live in a climate where known perpetrators commit violence with impunity,” the Members of Congress wrote. “It is in the best interest of the United States and India to reaffirm religious freedom as a shared value in this growing partnership, and ensure that conversation concerning justice and accountability for such horrific acts of violence continues.” In the letter, the lawmakers cite several specific examples of violent attacks that have killed or displaced religious minorities. Human rights groups in India have investigated and traced these attacks to specific groups, but a current climate of impunity exists in India around such attacks and many victims never receive justice. “As we consider the shared values of the United States and India, due attention to the fundamental human right of religious freedom is of the utmost importance,” Representative Franks said. “Religious minority communities in India have endured incidents of harassment, discrimination, intimidation and violent attacks for decades, often with little hope for justice. It is my sincere hope that every person in India will experience true freedom of faith, regardless of religion.” View the full letter here.

Congressman Jeff Flake: Expanding HSAs: Forbes is reporting that Sen. Flake and Rep. Dave Brat have teamed up to introduce a bill that tackles rising health care costs by expanding Heath Savings Accounts (HSAs). The Flake-Brat HSA Expansion Act would increase the annual contribution limits and allowing for more universal participation in HSAs. This bill would also eliminate current regulations associated with HSAs and repeal some of the restrictions that were put in place by the Affordable Care Act. Read the full story here.

· Key Takeaway: “Flake-Brat would make health care better, more affordable, and more secure.  It would do so by dramatically reducing government’s influence over the health care sector.  By shifting from employers to consumers nearly a quarter of the $3 trillion Americans spend annually on health care, Large HSAs would begin to make the health care sector and health policy respond to the needs of patients.”

Wasteful Spending: The Arizona Republic published a front-page story on Sen. Flake’s recent oversight report, Twenty Questions: Government Studies That Will Leave You Scratching your head. Read the full story here.

· Key Takeaway: "These agencies are always saying we need additional money," Flake told The Arizona Republic. In particular, NIH (National Institutes of Health) coming out and saying if we hadn't seen the (spending) cuts then we would have had a vaccine for Ebola," he added. "I understand that we need to appropriate additional money sometimes when we have something like Ebola or Zika — I think that's justified. But at the same time, to be wasting money on some studies like this when we ought to prioritize better, just strikes me as something we ought to draw attention to."

Senator John McCain, Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, on the Statement of Administration Policy on the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2017: “Like all products of bureaucracy, the Statement of Administration Policy is a sorry defense of the status quo: misalignment of authority and accountability, deficits in strategic integration and harnessing innovation, bloated staffs, a broken defense acquisition system, and dependence on Russia for access to space. In its laundry list of imaginary doomsday scenarios, the Administration repeatedly misstates and misconstrues provisions of the NDAA, leaving one to wonder how closely Administration officials read this legislation, or whether they read it at all. I hope when the NDAA reaches the President’s desk, he understands the critical importance of this legislation to our national security better than his Administration seems to now.”

U.S. Senator John McCain on the announcement by the U.S. Forest Service and its partners that they will invest over $11 million to support work and training opportunities for more than 1,500 youth and veterans in national forests and public lands through the 21st Century Conservation Corps (21CSC): “I applaud today’s announcement that the U.S. Forest Service and its partners will invest over $11 million to support important projects on public lands in Arizona and across the country through 21CSC. The 21CSC is an important public-private partnership that has put returning veterans and young people to work on public lands, expanding national service opportunities and completing priority projects in our national parks, forests and tribal lands. Today’s announcement follows the $3.16 million commitment that the Departments of the Interior and Agriculture made last month with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation for similar projects. With today's announcement, these conservation corps will partner with federal land management agencies to complete projects critical to our state, including trail construction and maintenance, fire mitigation, mining reclamation, invasive species management, and water conservation. These projects stretch from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon to the Coconino, Tonto, and Coronado National Forests. Native American conservation corps participants will also conduct desert restoration and trail improvement projects on tribal lands, in Tonto National Forest and across Maricopa County. I recently introduced the 21CSC Act to build on this work in Arizona and across the country by providing the legislative authority necessary to ensure its continued success. The legislation would increase national service opportunities for young people and veterans working to protect, restore, and enhance the outdoors by leveraging existing resources and private funding. In addition to providing valuable service opportunities, these efforts would address the National Park Service’s deferred maintenance backlog totaling over $11.9 billion nationwide in a cost-effective way. The commitment announced today is not only critical for enhancing service opportunities for our young people, but also revitalizing and preserving our great outdoors for the next generation.”
