Political Consultant Constantin “CQ” Querard has filed a challenge against first-time LD13 House candidate Ray Kouns, charging Kouns doesn’t have enough qualified signatures to get on the Aug 30 Primary ballot. Querard says Kouns should be disqualified for using the November general election date instead of the August primary election date on the petition sheets. Kouns says, the Secretary of State’s office advised him to use the Nov election date. Querard  says Kouns also has some invalid signatures on the petition sheets. Kouns says Querard is just trying to run him off the ballot so there isn’t a competitive LD13 House race. Kouns needed 414 signatures. He turned in 699. Several days ago Kouns told Briefs that if Querard manages to get him bounced from the ballot, he might challenge LD13 House candidate Don Shooter’s actual residency in Yuma. Yellow Sheet also reports that Kouns might request a review of Shooter’s utility bills. Shooter, who has termed out as a senator, is running for Steve Montenegro’s house position, while Montenegro is  running for Shooter’s   senate seat. LD13 House incumbent Darin Mitchell is running to hold his current House position. Diane Landis, who lost her 2014 House race to Mitchell and Montenegro (aka the M&M Team),  is currently running against Montenegro for the  senate seat.  William Gonzalez, who also submitted petitions for the LD13 senate seat,  could not be reached last night, as to whether he is still in the senate race. Reports are circulating the Gonzalez had or would be withdrawing due to a shortage of qualified signatures that surfaced when Querard and Gonzalez reviewed Gonzalez’s petitions signatures several days ago. UPdATE: Gonzalez is listed among challenged candidates released from the SOS office this morning. -ft

Meanwhile Challenges have been set in motion in several other races. Dem Elections Director Sam Almy has reportedly asked for all GOP candidate signatures in CD1, along with LD7 GOP candidate Candace Begody-Begay’s signature sheets. CD5 Dem candidate Kinsey Remaklus asked for Republican Andy Biggs signatures sheet. Christine Jones signatures are also being scrutinized. Reports have also surfaced of signature review requests in LD28, LD26, LD16, LD. LD23, and LD29.

Challenges  Extended into the Justice of Peace races. Former legislator Carl Seel has challenged Travis Pullen, who is opposing Seel for the Moon Valley Justice of the Peace position. Pullen is the son of former AZGOP Chairman Randy Pullen. Since 5 pm, June 15 was the challenge filing deadline, more challenges will probably surface this weekend. Clair Van Steenwyk’s running for both the US Senate and the US House at the same time is still of topic of discussion as well.

Sean Spicer, RNC Chief Strategist and Communications Director: Hillary Clinton will say anything. Today she is bringing her campaign of hypocrisy to Virginia, where she is likely to continue her misguided calls to weaken Americans’ Second Amendment rights in the aftermath of the terror attack in Orlando. The day after the attack, Clinton said, “We need to keep guns like the ones used last night out of the hands of terrorists or other violent criminals.” This is one area where we can all agree. But if she is serious, her first step must be to walk back her praise of Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s controversial restoration of rights for more than 200,000 felons, which included convicted rapists, murderers, and other violent offenders who now have a path toward legally purchasing a firearm. Commonwealth’s attorneys from both parties have spoken out against this action, which, as The Washington Post reported, covered “some high-profile killers whose crimes shocked their small communities.”  Hillary Clinton likes to have it both ways on just about everything, but she cannot claim to want to keep guns from violent criminals while continuing her support for her friend McAuliffe’s reckless blanket restoration order. And let’s not forget: the entire reason McAuliffe wanted to flood the voter rolls with newly enfranchised felons was to benefit Hillary Clinton’s electoral chances. But in his haste to create more than 200,000 potential new voters for his longtime friend, violent criminals got the same treatment as a serial bad check writer. So if Hillary Clinton means what she says about keeping guns out the hands of violent criminals, she must put her political ambitions aside and retract her support for Gov. McAuliffe’s reckless restoration order that could put guns in reach of people found guilty of heinous crimes.

Secretary of State Michele Reagan will welcome Phoenix City Councilman Bill Gates as a guest reader at the Arizona Braille and Talking Book Library on Fri, June 17. Gates will read two of Dr. Rodney Glassman’s children’s books. The Braille and Talking Book Library (a division of the Secretary of State’s office) provide braille and audio books through the mail at no cost to Arizona residents who find it difficult to read standard print books because of a visual impairment or physical disability.  The library has over 60,000 titles to choose from and includes the same types of books you’d find in most public libraries.  Almost 500,000 books were loaned to Arizona patrons last year.

Today Republican National Committee (RNC) Chief of Staff Katie Walsh and Donald J. Ed is a total professional and the right man for the job," said Manafort. “Ed has been an important member of our team since March and I’m confident he will only strengthen the strong relationship between the RNC and our campaign.” Ed Brookover has over 30 years of political experience and most recently served as a Senior Advisor to the Trump Campaign working with the successful delegate selection and management team. Prior to joining the Trump Campaign, Brookover served as campaign manager to Dr. Ben Carson. Congressman Paul A. Gosar after the House Appropriations Committee passed the manager’s amendment to the Interior and Environment Appropriations bill for Fiscal Year 2017, which included  language condemning the actions by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (the Service) for proposing new boating restrictions for Lake Havasu: The list of supporters in favor of keeping Lake Havasu open for all users continues to grow with the House Appropriations Committee today condemning the Service’s actions to propose new boating restrictions for Havasu. I’d like to commend Chairman Ken Calvert and his staff for working with my office and recognizing the extremely flawed manner in which the Service went about proposing arbitrary mandates that aim to prevent tubing, fishing, waterskiing and wakeboarding on the reservoir. The Service thought it could quietly close more areas on Lake Havasu without publicly engaging local stakeholders, but now these unwarranted restrictions have garnered nationwide attention. “Today’s action by the House Appropriations Committee sends a strong message to the Service and puts the agency on notice that the Committee who controls the purse strings is watching. I will continue to use every resource available to reject this job-killing proposal that threatens the livelihood of an entire community. Bureaucratic overreach on Lake Havasu must come to an end.” Background: The following language was included in the manager’s amendment that passed the Full House Appropriations Committee today: In the report on page 16, under National Wildlife Refuge System, insert the following new paragraph: “The Service is reminded that solutions to recreational-use conflicts in national wildlife refuges should begin with the Refuge Manager engaging their local communities and collaborating with local officials and other representatives of recreational users to find mutually-agreeable solutions to conflicts.  Failure to do so can result in significant public backlash, such as has happened with regard to proposed new recreational boating restrictions at Lake Havasu National Wildlife Refuge.

The House Ways And Means Committee today favorably approved Congresswoman Martha McSally’s legislation, the Halt Tax Increases on the Middle Class and Seniors Act, clearing a major hurdle for the bill in Congress. The legislation reverses a tax hike contained in the President’s health care law on middle class families and stops it from taking effect on seniors. “For the past year, we’ve worked hard to build the support needed to move this bill ahead in Congress,” said McSally. “We’ve gathered support from members of both parties and advocacy groups, made the case to the relevant committee, and continued to raise awareness of this looming tax hike on seniors. Our seniors worked hard their entire lives for a secure retirement. They should not be on the hook now for the massive new spending authorized under the health care act, and I will continue to fight to stop this tax hike on them and roll it back on middle class families.” On Sept 22, McSally introduced the Halt Tax Increases on the Middle Class and Seniors Act with bipartisan support. Last month, she spoke before the Ways and Means Committee, the committee of jurisdiction, to urge members to take action on the bill. The little known tax hike contained in the Affordable Care Act was brought to Rep. McSally’s attention by a local Green Valley constituent, Loren Thorson. McSally spoke in honor of Thorson and his dedicated efforts to raise awareness of this issue last year on the House floor.

Congressman Martha McSally today successfully added an amendment to defense funding legislation providing $100 million for new A-10 wing upgrades. Currently, over 100 A-10 aircraft are in need of re-fitted wings to extend their service lives past 2028. “This amendment sends another strong signal that Congress backs the A-10 and supports keeping them flying,” said McSally. “Currently, 110 of the 283 remaining A-10s in our inventory have not received funding for needed wing upgrades to extend their service lives. Without these upgrades, 13 A-10s would begin to be grounded in FY2018, 28 by FY2019, and nearly 50 by FY2021. We’ve mothballed the equivalent of four A-10 squadrons over recent years, leaving us with barely enough aircraft to meet current threats. With A-10s deployed to four theaters around the world, we not only need to prevent the premature retiring of anymore A-10s, but we need to ensure the aircraft we have are able to continue flying until a tested, proven replacement is developed – and that’s what this amendment does.” Today’s amendment builds on McSally’s efforts to keep the A-10 Warthog flying. Last year, she successfully fought for full funding of our entire A-10 fleet. This year, her advocacy has led to full funding for the A-10 in defense authorization and appropriation legislation. In addition, in defense authorizing legislation last month, Rep. McSally successfully advocated for inclusion of a provision mandating an A-10, F-35 fly-off before anymore A-10s can be retired. The provision outlines what capabilities must be tested in a fly-off. More about that provision can be read in McSally’s op-ed in the Air Force Times HERE.

Candidate for Maricopa County Sheriff Dan Saban response to Tom Morrissey. I’m confused by your alacrity; spewing flawed/biased information on two important issues: My voter registration and my stance on immigration. This allows me two separate opportunities to provide accurate information to the MCRC readers. I am a lifelong Republican. My professional record validates this, as I‘m a proven fiscal conservative, never violated the rule of law, have never been in contempt of court, and have always protected constitutional liberties during my 32 year law enforcement career. During my 2004 Republican campaign against your guy, he inappropriately, and unethically, opened a false criminal investigation against me (as he has done on multiple occasions against anyone who dare oppose him). He then leaked it (falsely represented as factual) to the press leading to my eventual defeat. After that election I approached several Republican Legislators, State, and County party leadership members requesting they consider putting forth legislation: which would preclude candidates from investigating their opponent during an election cycle. I was dismissed out of fear of your guy. As you well know, the oath of office for Sheriff is a very specific and a non-partisan oath; thus, the duties are apolitical. In 2008, when I ran as Democrat, to offer a larger voting pool (an additional option in the General election, a very common strategy used across our great country). Let me remind you, your guy was a lifelong (even ran for public office) Democrat and registered to run for Sheriff as a Republican for the same reason. The only difference is his well demonstrated and true Democrat colors show through during his tenure of failures and fiscal irresponsibility. You cannot say the same for mine. My next, part 2, commentary will relate to the immigration issues you mentioned.

US Senate candidate Kelli Ward: Establishment John is running scared -- that's why he and the big money Super PACs backing his campaign have spent millions of dollars attacking our movement with fabrications and falsehoods. Money and the lies they're spreading -- that's the only ammo the Establishment has to attack us with. We can't let them win with that. But while we have the will of the people on our side and a bold, fresh, fearless plan for restoring real conservative leadership to the Senate, we don't have the money to keep up with the Establishment's lies. So I'm reaching out for your help, Frosty. We have the grassroots on our side and we have the solutions that America needs -- now we need the money to take the fight directly to Establishment John and his cronies. With less than three months left, now's the time to step up and fight for the will of the people. kelli-ward-grassroots
