The Governor’s Youth Commission (GYC) challenges Arizona’s youth to service with the 2nd annual friendly competition between all fifteen counties. This competition encourages all youth in Arizona to implement service projects in their communities from September 19, 2016 - January 7, 2017 and record them on the GYC website: BeSeenBeHeard.az.gov with photos and videos. Last year La Paz County set the standard for mobilizing youth and ranked number one. With all of the counties competing, over 94,000 youth-led service hours were logged. The county with the most projects will receive special recognition from the Governor’s Office of Youth, Faith and Family (GOYFF). “I am so inspired by all the motivated youth in Arizona who serve others. This competition is a great way to improve our neighborhoods and connect our communities,” shared the GOYFF Director, Debbie Moak. “I look forward to seeing which county will mobilize the most youth and win this year’s competition.” The GYC seeks to form a collective voice, while inspiring youth across the state to bring about positive change.  Along with the service competition that runs through January, all Arizona youth are encouraged to participate in the Global Youth Service Day on April 21-23, 2017.  For the second year in a row, Arizona was ranked number one in the world for the most youth-led service projects completed. Attorney General Mark Brnovich has announced the State of Arizona has reached a settlement in a lawsuit challenging SB 1070.  The settlement keeps in place a key provision of SB 1070 section 2(b) which allows Arizona law enforcement  to check the immigration status of those suspected of being in the country illegally. Under the settlement, all Plaintiffs and Defendants in Valle Del Sol vs. Whiting, agreed to dismiss their appeals.“We have succeeded by keeping the key provisions of SB 1070 in place,” said Brnovich. “Our goal while negotiating this settlement was to find a common sense solution that protects Arizona taxpayers while helping our great state move forward.” In September 2015, U.S. District Court Judge Susan R. Bolton granted Arizona’s request for summary judgment and dismissed six of seven of the Plaintiffs claims in Valle del Sol v. Whiting. Judge Bolton also upheld section 2(b) which allows officers, while enforcing other laws, to question the immigration status of those suspected of being in the country illegally. The ACLU and other plaintiffs appealed the U.S. District’s Court decision. Both parties have agreed to dismiss their appeals. Under the settlement, an Informal Attorney General Opinion will be issued providing guidance and clarity to Arizona law enforcement agencies and officers on how to comply with the key provision of SB 1070 section 2(b). The U.S. Supreme Court also upheld section 2(b). The informal opinion memorializes the U.S. District Court and the U.S. Supreme Court rulings. The Plaintiffs also agreed to reduce their attorneys fees to $1.4 million. The finals terms of the settlement are currently pending court approval

CONGRESSIONAL STATEMENTS

Please comply with the 300 word limit policy. If statements exceeds the limit,

it will be edited. Briefs does not post endorsement.

Congresswoman Martha McSally: “I’m saddened to hear of the loss of Governor Mofford, a tremendous public servant and trailblazer who was loved by many. Rose began her career at a time when woman filled very few public offices. She faced, and overcame, overt sexism to rise to the highest elected office in Arizona, and she did it with grace, character, and good humor. Her dedication to excellence and civility left its mark not just on the state, but on the institution of governor, and her impact will be felt long after this day. I join others around our state in mourning the loss of such a giving and selfless servant of Arizona.”
