Arizona Secretary of State Michele Reagan has issued the official canvass of results for the 2016 General Election. The Secretary was joined by Attorney General Mark Brnovich and Chief Justice Scott Bales for the formal certification. Reagan reported 2.6 million Arizonans voted in the general election, making it the highest number of ballots cast in state history. While there were a historic number of votes, turnout was about average at 74% ranking 6th highest in Arizona history.
1. 1980 - 80.1% Reagan - Carter
2. 2008 - 77.7% Obama - McCain
3. 1992 - 77.2% Clinton - Bush
4. 2004 - 77.1% Bush - Kerry
5. 2012 - 74.4% Obama - Romney
6. 2016 - 74.2% Trump – Clinton
Demographically, women made up 55% of Arizona’s electorate while 18-24 year olds made up 6%. The average age of the Arizona voter is 55.
Early balloting continues to grow and the rising number of provisional ballots has finally been stopped. The general election saw 73% of the electorate vote by early ballot, up from 54% in 2012. While the number of early voters continues to increase, the issuance of provisional ballots declined by 80,000 since the 2012 general election.
“The reduction of provisional ballots is extremely good news, as it shows us our voter education efforts are working,” said Reagan. “In the last three presidential elections, the issuance of provisional ballots had increased every year. This particular election seems to indicate a new positive trend and I hope it continues. Running four statewide elections this year was extremely challenging for election administrators around the state. Some things went well, and we uncovered a number of things we’d like to improve. Finally, I’d like to thank our counties for their diligence to process and tabulate ballots as efficiently as they do. While we will continue to explore options to get to results faster, we will always prioritize accuracy over expediency.”

President-elect Donald Trump critics are squawking their heads off about his cabinet appointments, but one reader – a longtime businessman – points out the squawkers are missing the point in Trump’s appointment of Don Carson as the Secretary Of Housing & Urban Development. “He was raised in the ghetto. He knows more about what needs to be done than any of those stuffed shirts in DC,” the reader said.

Republican National Committee (RNC) Co-Chair Sharon Day on commemorating the anniversary of the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott of 1955-1956: “Rosa Parks’ courage on a Montgomery, Alabama bus in December 1955 helped fuel one of the great demonstrations for freedom and equality in our nation’s history. Her stand for human dignity and equality lit the spark of conscience in citizens across Montgomery, leading to a bus boycott which dealt a blow to injustice and drew national attention to the burgeoning civil rights movement. By refusing to take the bus, freedom-minded people across that city made a 381-day declaration that liberty was of infinitely greater importance than any convenience in getting where they had to go. Today we commemorate the Montgomery bus boycott, a bold act of conviction which helped put segregation to death and moved America one step closer to completely honoring the Declaration of Independence’s truism that “all men are created equal.”

Congressman Trent Franks: Friday the House passed the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2017. This legislation fulfills Congress’ Constitutional obligation to “provide for the common defense” by funding our national defense with $619 billion. To commemorate the significant achievements of the NDAA, Congressman Trent Franks released the following statement: "Today we celebrate the passage of the FY2017 National Defense Authorization Act which provides the largest pay raise in six years for those who serve our country with honor. The NDAA will increase ground and aviation training to bolster our readiness and strengthen our national defense. Guantanamo Bay is staying open, keeping dangerous terrorists from returning to the battlefield. Active and retired military personnel remain protected against increased out of pocket healthcare costs. This legislation equips our troops with the necessary tools and resources to protect this great nation and keep Americans safe at home and abroad.”
Congresswoman Martha McSally: For too long, our failed mental health care system has left families and communities with nowhere to turn. Last week, the House took giant steps to improve how we help families and communities get the assistance and care they need. On Wednesday, the House passed my legislation to help communities better respond to mental health crises and provide better treatment options for families and individuals struggling with mental illness. These provisions were the result of months of hard work and the bipartisan support of a diverse group of lawmakers and organizations, including mental health advocates and law enforcement. We also passed the largest overhaul to our mental health system in 50 years. I’m proud to see these important reforms pass the House and will continue to work to get them passed in the Senate and signed into law.
U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ), Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, demanded accountability for the Navy’s troubled Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), which has experienced significant cost overruns and scheduling delays while failing to reach the operational capabilities needed for deployment. “The Littoral Combat Ship, or LCS, is an unfortunate yet all too common example of defense acquisition gone awry,” said Chairman McCain. “Since the early stages of this program, I have been critical of fundamental LCS shortcomings. And here we are 15 years later with an alleged warship that according to Dr. Gilmore’s assessments can’t survive a hostile combat environment and has yet to demonstrate its most important warfighting functions, and a program chosen for affordability that, as the GAO has reported, has doubled in cost with the potential for further overruns. Taxpayers have paid a heavy price for these mistakes,” he continued. “The LCS was initially expected to cost $220 million per ship. But the cost of each ship has more than doubled to $478 million. The LCS’s first urgently needed combat capability in mine countermeasures was supposed to deliver in 2008. That capability is still not operational, nor is it expected to be until 2020. 12 years late. 12 years late… This is unacceptable. And this committee wants to know, Secretary Stackley, who is responsible and who has been held accountable.” The hearing follows a new report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) stating that the LCS “stands at a crossroads” and questioning whether Congress should authorize as much as $14 billion for the program, even as it “costs twice as much yet delivers less capability than planned.” Watch the full committee hearing here.

Phoenix Councilman Sal DiCiccio: Wednesday, Phoenix City Councilmembers Debra Stark, Laura Pastor, Daniel Valenzuela, Michael Nowakowski, Kate Gallego, Thelda Williams and Mayor Greg Stanton voted to use your taxpayer monies to fund union activity. The government unions can now use your taxpayer dollars to fund their union activities, which will include lobbying elected officials. Councilman Jim Waring and I voted against this misuse of taxpayer funds. This is such an unfortunate step backwards for us. It is hard to justify giving unions this money when the city is so short on vital resources. But this is what happens when politicians are controlled by unions. You have my commitment that I will continue to protect your hard earned taxpayer dollars by always putting your interests first.
