12-14-16 Briefs

Republican Briefs

Editor Frosty Taylor       Web Master John Strasser

Maricopa County Supt of Public Instruction Diane Douglas has invited Arizona legislators to attend the 9 am, Dec 14 Arizona Standards Development Committee (ASDC) meeting where the new Arizona English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics Standards will be addressed. Anti-Common Core leaders are concerned that the new standards are a “rebranding” of Common Core and have issued invitations for parents to attend the meeting. Douglas says the new standards are an “absolute improvement” over Common Core. However, one reader says, the new version is like “putting lipstick on a pig.” The second draft can be found at Comments can be viewed at The meeting is scheduled at the Arizona Department of Education Bldg.,1535 W Jefferson St., in Phoenix.

Sympathy Cards For The Family Of Peggy Hurd, former Arizona Federation of Republican Women leader who passed away Fri., Dec 9, following a six-month battle with cancer, can be sent to Jerry Hurd, 1664 E Florence Blvd., Suite 4-416, Casa Grande, Arizona  85122-4779. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date – probably in January. Peggy was a regional director AFRW and President of the Grande Valley Republican Club for many years. She was also active in the National Society of Children of the American Revolution.

On Mon, Dec 12 the Prescott Republican Men’s Forum and on Tues., Dec 13 the Mingus Mountain Republican Club unanimously passed resolutions to “Support the Preservation of the Constitution and the Electoral College.” Both resolutions are identical to the resolutions passed by the Prescott Chapter of Arizona Republican Assembly (AzRA) on Dec 10. See Briefs Archives 12-12-16 to view the resolution.

Lynne Breyer, LD23 Credentials Chairman: Fake News is all the rage these days.  Chris Brant's claim of Proxy harvesting in LD23 is a perfect example of that. See 12_13_2016 Briefs archive  Apparently to Brant, just telling the facts is now "indignation" and a "farce."  I suppose he is saying this is not a district full of hard working, wonderful PCs worthy of being State Committeemen!  So let's clear the air.  Since you brought it up, it was I who first brought the issue of the Ballot Harvesting problem to Michele Reagan's attention when she was in the Senate. She ran a bill that failed.  I and a PC from 28 met with her when she became Secretary of State and asked her to push that law again. Fortunately, this time it became law. No one is more annoyed by Ballot Harvesting than I am. The difference between that and proxy harvesting is that Ballot Harvesting is now against the law and proxies are not!  If I had my way, proxies would NOT be allowed, either. But to your inaccurate accusation, no proxy harvesting occurred in LD23. One of your friends brought the most - 11 proxies.  One PC brought 8, another 5.  After that no PC brought more than 1-3 proxies.  Of the 356 PCs in LD23, only 81 sent proxies. That is a mere 22%. Most PCs did not bring any.  As Chairman of the Credentials Committee, I can attest to this information.  No shenanigans for Jim O'Connor to comment on since none occurred, except in your mind.  I did see PCs campaigning for votes for themselves.  Good for them.  I can't help wondering, since you brought up O'Connor's run for AZGOP chair - is this an attempt to discredit him and/or his team of workers?

McSally’s legislation that was signed into law, H.R. 4336, was her second bill to become law during her first term in Congress. Forthcoming Facebook notes from her office in December will highlight additional 2016 accomplishments, such as her efforts to expand local infrastructure, improve our border strategy, protect local defense installations, ensure equal opportunity for women, and provide top notch constituent services.
