12-18-16 Briefs

Republican Briefs

Editor Frosty Taylor        Web Master John Strasser

Editor’s Note: Reports have been surfacing the past couple of weeks over things that allegedly transpired at LD Organizational meetings throughout the Valley. On Dec 6, AZGOP Chairman Robert Graham sent a letter to LD/County Chairmen regarding complaints he had received. See Graham’s complete letter at 12-10-2016_Briefs archive Due to the length of the documents referred to below, Briefs isn’t posting the two full documents. However, they are now posted in their entirety on the LD23 website. I urge readers, particularly LD Chairs, state committeemen, and PCs to click on both of the links below and read AZGOP Robert Graham’s Dec 9 letter to LD23 … and Chairman Nancy Ordowski response challenging what the LD23 Board and their legal counsel “believe is an unjustifiable attempt to prevent their participation in the upcoming AZGOP Statutory meeting.”  - ft

Newly Elected LD23 Chairman Nancy Ordowski: This notice is for all of our PCs but it is especially important for those chosen by the membership on December 1 as our 119 state committeemen nominees.  These 119 PCs will be "officially elected" as state committeemen at the MCRC Statutory Meeting on January 14, 2017 in preparation for the AZGOP Statutory Meeting to be held on January 28, 2017. Our December 1 Organizational Meeting was held in strict compliance with Arizona Revised Statutes, and in accordance with the bylaws of District 23 Republican Committee, Maricopa County Republican Committee, and the Arizona Republican Party.

     We recently received (by e-mail) a letter from AZGOP Chairman Robert Graham which made allegations that our December 1 election was not "legitimate."  He also asserted that, unless our district took certain steps at his direction, "the state party will consider these state committeemen positions vacant and will fill them according to state law."  The elected officers of District 23 Republican Committee have thoroughly reviewed Chairman Graham's allegations in consultation with legal counsel, and we consider them to be totally without merit and beyond the scope of his position as AZGOP Chairman.  It is our responsibility to defend our PCs and our rightfully chosen state committeemen nominees from what we believe is an unjustifiable attempt to prevent their participation in the upcoming AZGOP Statutory Meeting.

     While we recognize that you would prefer to spend your time celebrating the Christmas and Hanukkah holidays and take a brief break from politics, we ask that you please take the time to read:  1] the December 9, 2016 letter from Robert Graham to Chairman Emeritus Jim O'Connor (candidate for AZGOP Chairman) RobertGraham-12092016-letter.pdf; and 2] the December 15 reply to Robert Graham from Chairman Nancy Ordowski Reply-to-Robert-Graham-12152016.pdf We will provide you with updates on this situation as they develop. Thank you!

Congressman Paul A. Gosar after the President of the United States of America signed into law legislation sponsored by the Congressman, H.R.6304, to designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 501 North Main Street in Florence, Arizona, as the “Adolfo ‘Harpo’ Celaya Post Office”: “I am very happy to see the president sign my bill honoring this great Arizonan into law without delay. Adolfo Celaya’s incredible story will now be officially and permanently commemorated  in his hometown of Florence, Arizona. This legislation ensures that future generations will learn about the incredible sacrifice that Mr. Celaya and the 317 survivors of the USS Indianapolis made for our country. “Despite living through one of the darkest moments of WWII, Mr. Celaya has continued to inspire countless Arizonans through his eternal patriotism and commitment to serving all Americans. I would like to commend the Town of Florence for their leadership in making this tribute possible and recognize Mr. Celaya for his dedicated sacrifice to our nation and commitment to his local community.” Background: Harpo Celaya enlisted in the Navy at the age of 16 to serve his country in World War II. He was only 17 when the ship he was stationed aboard, the USS Indianapolis, was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine.  The ship sank in 12 minutes plunging Celaya and hundreds of his fellow sailors into the sea where they clung to sparse life vests or rafts, battling dehydration, exposure, and shark infested waters for more than four days awaiting rescue.  Of the nearly 1,200 sailors that had been stationed aboard the USS Indianapolis, only 317 survived and were pulled from the sea. Celaya was awarded the Purple Heart and upon recovery returned to Arizona and continued a lifetime of service in his community. He is well known throughout Arizona for sharing his experiences with high school students as part of the Veterans Heritage Project in an effort to keep history alive.

AZGOP Chairman Candidate Jim O’Connor’s Resolution Opposing National Popular Vote Compact:

Whereas, the Constitutional method of electing the President of the United States through the Electoral College was the method deemed best by the founding fathers of the United States of America for ensuring state sovereignty because all states, both large and small, are included in the Presidential election process; and,

Whereas, the Constitution preserves the balance of power and authority between the federal and state governments through the mechanism of the Electoral College; and,

Whereas, the Electoral College has been tested and proven itself over 56 presidential elections as the method to best preserve our representative Republican form of government, resulting in the election of a President by a majority of electoral votes not a mere plurality; and,

Whereas, the National Popular Vote Compact if successfully implemented would eviscerate the constitutional Electoral College process of electing the President of the United States; and,

Whereas, it is the moral and legal conviction that the Constitution is the supreme law of the land amendable only by means specified within Article V of the Constitution; and,

Whereas, the Constitution is the document that originated our constitutional republic which created the “rule of law”, which protects our freedoms, individual liberties, and our right to make individual choices. Those protections would be lost forever as this National Popular Vote Compact would move us from a republic into a pure democracy subjecting us to majoritarian rule; and,

Whereas, the Arizona State Legislature does not have the moral or legal authority to “reassign” the outcome of the vote of the citizens of Arizona across state borders without the consent of the governed.

Therefore be it Resolved, that the AZGOP opposes this attempt to undermine the U.S. Constitution and the Electoral College by way of the National Popular Vote Compact; and,

Further be it Resolved, that the AZGOP does fully endorse retaining the constitutionally approved and time-tested Electoral College method of awarding electoral votes to candidates to win the office of the President of the United States of America;

And be it further Resolved, the AZGOP strongly encourages our Arizona members of the State House and Senate to reject the National Popular Vote Compact and to neither sponsor nor vote in favor of such legislation should it be proposed. Editor’s Note: See to download a Power Point presentation on this issue.

AZGOP Chairman Candidate Jonathan Lines: Did you know that Jonathan Lines has been involved in many local organizations serving the community? He served for 11 years on the National Advisory Board for Johns Manville, a Warren Buffet Company, is a member of the Boy Scout District Council for 14 years and currently serves on the Executive Board of the Arizona Grand Canyon Council. He has also served on the Yuma Rotary Board and the Caballeros de Yuma, a civic group fashioned after the model of the Phoenix Thunderbirds, serving for many years as chairman of the Balloon Festival, Major League Baseball, Midnight at the Oasis, the southwest premier Classic car show and was featured on the Speed Channels "My Classic Car".  His love for the outdoors and belief in the Second Amendment make him a perfect fit as the Arizona Game and Fish Heritage Fund statewide Arizona representative. Jonathan promises to use these experiences and statewide connections to Grow The Party And Expand Its Influence!
