Republican Briefs

Worlds-Largest-Air-Tanker-On-The-Sidelines-As-AZ-Fires-Burn It's the largest firefighting air tanker in the world. Stationed in southern Arizona, the converted Boeing 747-400 jumbo jet can drop nearly twice the payload of its competitors. But it won't be fighting the fires now burning near Prescott. The owner of the massive plane says it's ready to go, but government bureaucracy is keeping his plane on the ground. "The process that you go through with the Forest Service is not one that gets finished in a hurry," said James Wheeler

Goodwin-Fire-Now-21000-Acres; 1000-Personnel-Battling-Blaze The wildfire sparked Saturday in the Prescott National Forest, originating in the Pine Flat area. See Arizona Wildfire Forces Thousands Of People From Their Homes The fire is burning in chaparral and ponderosa pine, which officials say "is conducive to extreme erratic fire behavior." Wednesday Media briefings: Goodwin Fire- PART 1 and Goodwin Fire- PART 2

Tuesday evening we stood on the back patio and watched huge plumes of smoke rolling upward from Goodwin fire. The fire pipeline tells Briefs that political activist Sue Goodchild was evacuated yesterday and that Arizona’s RNC Committeewoman Lori Klein-Corbin’s cabin went up in smoke (unconfirmed). Some Yavapai County contacts told Briefs that they had put everything they could into their campers in preparation to evacuate. Reports came in that those who couldn’t get their horses/cattle out in time, have tied their phone numbers to their animals and turned them loose in hopes those who might find them can phone them after the fire is over. One fellow was badly in need of horse trailers to remove 50 sheep. Dave Hunt, a retired Game and Fish pilot, happens to be one of the pilots flying the Goodwin fire. So far, the annual Fourth of July Prescott rodeo is still on. - ft

For Eight Years We Heard how the Republican Congressional Delegations would repeal ObamaCare and provide a better plan. Instead of preparing that “better” plan well in advance – waffling, whimpy Mitch McConnell developed a plan behind closed doors that turned out to be less than satisfactory when it surfaced a few days ago. Now the bumbling ole pol is scrambling around trying to come up with a revised plan because he doesn’t have the votes to pass his backfiring plan. Yup, it’s time to drain the swamp of the career pols. The Dems may love him, but he’s an embarrassment to the GOP. –ft

Bruce Piepho, Cochise county State Committee/PC:  LD20 PC and State Committeeman Marianne Ferrari asked:  As treasurer, why would Jonathan Lines fail to call for the 2016 audit prior to the Statutory Meeting, as bylaws require? 6-26-17 Briefs My answer: Probably because the books were under the control of AZGOP Chair Robert Graham. Before the January 2017 election, Jonathan Lines, AZGOP Treasurer and AZGOP Chair candidate and I discussed on the phone an audit of the AZGOP accounting records. I asked if it was being done by a CPA firm. He said yes actually two audits were to take place or will be soon. One was an internal review and the other by a CPA firm. I asked for the name of the CPA firm but Lines could not remember the name. Was he just Treasurer-in-Name-Only? Probably. If Lines took his oath of office, but never actually served as treasurer, would that not be another breach of the bylaws? YES. A big thank you to Arizona Town Crier Jim Ehl 6-28-17-briefs: And, the beat goes on. As Lolly Hathhorn ask, “Where are all of the other County Chairmen? 6-27-17-briefs I have looked up the link provided by Jim and will ask that very question.

Writer Dexter Dugan: Frosty, I'd like to commend your accurately citing some recent quotations I used from Rob Haney 6-26-17 Briefs and Constantin Querard 6-28-17-Briefs

Yuma PC Connie Uribe: Last evening was the first meeting of the Yuma County Republican Committee under newly-elected Chairman Russ Jones. There was a lack of the new PCs appointed at the last meeting. Jones reminded us of Reagan's 11th Commandment -- speak not ill of another Republican. Jones offered PC applications for appointments explaining we had 77 PCs. I reminded him Paul Brierley announced at the meeting last month we had 95 PCs -- 51 on record and 44 harvested for the election. I inquired as to what happened to the others. Jones questioned how many voted in last month’s election; and a voice from the back said, "78!" I said there is no way every PC voted in that election, pointing out the difference between his number and the number that voted. He said he'd check into the discrepancy. Later he remarked that Paul Brierley is working on the state bylaws and after they are completed, we need to tackle our local bylaws. I told Jones a committee was formed months ago and it has been working on our bylaws. Jones remarked he wasn't aware of that and I said, "That's because you haven't been around." Talk about touching a nerve! Jones spun around and said, "Oh, you don't need to make a snide remark like that!" I replied with, "All I'm saying is Jonathan or Paul or Nathaniel should have explained this to you if you've been in touch with them." Then a voice from the back of the room (someone who hasn't been around for some time,) shouted for me to shut up. Jones had no response to his loud outburst. This is the third time we've seen Jones at a local GOP meeting since he lost his legislative position to Darin Mitchell three election cycles ago after which Jones sued Mitchell and lost. Editor’s Note: Uribe’s commentary was condensed to conform with the Briefs 300 word limit policy. – ft

Clint Hickman, District 4 Maricopa County Board of Supervisors: Need a nature fix? Join a guided Bird Walk On Saturday, July 1 at 7:15 am at the Hassayampa River Preserve, of which a portion now officially belongs to Maricopa County. The Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department has assumed day-to-day management of the preserve, including its trails, educational outreach, services and visitor programs. As part of a new partnership, The Nature Conservancy and the Parks and Recreation Department will integrate the 770-acre preserve near Wickenburg as a component of the planned Vulture Mountains Recreation Area, a 71,000-acre regional recreational area west and south of the Hassayampa River Preserve. The 100-mile course of the Hassayampa River flows almost entirely underground, but within the preserve its waters emerge, creating a habitat for wildlife including a spectacular assortment of birds. Secretary of State Michele Reagan has announced that Arizona’s state and local election officials have successfully brought an end to a lawsuit filed by a national voting rights advocacy organization in 2016.  The negotiated settlement with Project Vote will improve the accuracy and accessibility of the information and avoided any finding of liability or imposition of attorneys’ fees against the state. Project Vote sued the state and two of its counties after objecting to the cost of purchasing voter registration information.  “We’re extremely pleased to have wrapped up this case and look forward to improving the data contained in the state’s voter registration database,” said Reagan.  “While the agreement commits us to do nothing more than the NVRA and state law requires, we will work with our counties to make sure the database contains everything that is required by federal law. Election officials often urge voters to verify their registration status.  In addition, counties work diligently to make sure their rolls are as accurate as possible.  With this agreement in place, it will be easier for all parties to ensure voters are not inadvertently kept off or canceled for inappropriate reasons.”

RNC Chr Ronna McDaniel: "I think Republicans are focused solely on the people who are hurting right now, who recognize that the system is collapsing. People in the near future are not going to have any choice in the marketplace. We've seen these states where they have one insurer left. Premiums go up in some cases up to 43 percent. It's not sustainable for a family to have suddenly $200 added to their monthly bill. They can't do it. We have to find relief for these families; they elected us to do it. It would be great if Democrats would come along and help. It would be great to find a way to work together and not make this a political football. It's unfortunate that Democrats have no interest in solving a problem that they created. Republicans are committed to it. We recognize the urgency, we recognize that people are looking to us to find relief." See It's Unfortunate Democrats Have No Interest In Solving A Problem They Created

Sun City West Republican Club President John Neal recently resigned for medical reasons.  He is currently in "home isolation" while his immune system rebuilds, according to his wife Jan. She shares his thoughts about how we each need to do our part to help this nation. (Condensed to fit the 300 word limit policy) –ft . John Neal: We are in a “homebound season,” therefore, we watch Sunday church services on television.  Yesterday, we heard a pastor preach on "conscience" and how it informs our thinking and response to life, i.e., decision-making "righteousness or wickedness." Living in a fallen world that is becoming increasing vile, evil, dark, and filled with hateful rhetoric allows each of us to let His light shine into these VERY dark places and demands that we stand up for our Christian values...or, WE will BE silenced!   It’s time to ask ourselves "How can I step up my game" in public places "speaking the truth in love?"  How can I serve this great country in ways I have not, yet, served her?  Am I willing to sacrifice some "me time" to serve on political committees, school boards, city councils, etc."  These are days that try men's souls and they aren't going to get any better UNLESS we speak out and let the progressive liberals know we are a courageous, self-sacrificing people who are unwilling to lose this great country because we sat back and let "someone else do it."  Recently, two new books Rediscovering Americanism:  And the Tyranny of Progressivism by Mark Levine, and Big Agenda: President Trump's Plan to Save America by David Horowitz, former liberal leftist. Many people have not a clue about what is going on in this country.  There are many wicked people who hate America. We Christian patriots have the very real potential to be a part of helping to "Make America Great Again" beginning with prayer.  This "4th of July" let each of us sing "God Bless America" with a new passion, a new vision of how we are to serve this land that we love.   We Can Do This, Christian Patriots!!!   I believe that when each of us reach that "other side," we will be grateful we gave our best while we were here.

“Rice’s Personal Involvement in unmasking the identities of U.S. persons from [U.S. intelligence] collection activities is extraordinarily unusual and smacks of an unlawful domestic political intelligence operation being run out of the Obama White House,” Chris Farrell, director of research and investigation for Judicial Watch, told Fox News…Read More

Congresswoman Martha McSally yesterday announced she has successfully secured full funding for the A-10 fleet, $103 million for new A-10 wings, $17.5 million for other necessary upgrades, and $6 million for safety inspections. This funding to support the A-10 Warthog was included in both the House Defense Appropriations bill approved by the House Armed Services Committee with a final vote on the entire Fiscal Year 2018 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) expected later today or tomorrow morning.  "The A-10 Warthog, which I flew, is a one-of-a-kind aircraft that is critical on any battlefield to keep our troops alive and rescue anyone trapped behind enemy lines. It is currently in the demilitarized zone protecting against North Korea aggression, destroying ISIS in the Middle East, and regularly deployed to Europe to support NATO and allies in the face of Russian aggression. It is crucial to keep the A-10 fully funded and upgraded until there is a proven, tested, replacement,” said McSally. “Today I secured two more victories with both the House Armed Services and Defense Appropriations Committees, including full funding for the entire A-10 fleet and additional funds to strengthen the wings of the A-10s that require it to fly well into the future." Currently, 110 A-10 aircraft are in need of re-fitted wings, or else these planes will start to be grounded beginning in FY 2018. Throughout her time in Congress, McSally has consistently advocated for necessary funding to keep the A-10 fleet operational. Last June, McSally successfully added an amendment to defense funding legislation for new A-10 wing upgrades, and worked with congressional leadership to include $20 million for new A-10 wings in the final FY 2017 Omnibus Appropriations bill. McSally also prevented the proposed premature retirement of the A-10 fleet under the Obama Administration. Davis-Monthan Air Force Base located in Rep. McSally’s district houses 83 A-10 Warthogs.

Congresswoman Martha McSally regarding the decision by the EPA and Army Corps of Engineers to propose a rule to repeal the Waters of the United States (WOTUS) rule and substantially redefine it to be consistent with Supreme Court decisions and long-standing practice: “WOTUS is a sweeping regulation written by unelected bureaucrats that would give the EPA jurisdiction over any type of body of water on private land—lakes, ponds, creeks, and even desert washes. I have heard from countless small businesses, farmers, and ranchers that this rule prevents them from doing their job, which is why I led dozens of my colleagues in Congress in writing to the Administration in February urging the President to reverse this rule for the sake of Southern Arizona and communities throughout the United States. I am pleased with the EPA’s decision to repeal the harmful WOTUS rule—and I know that Americans across the country are relieved by this news.” Since coming to Congress, McSally has consistently fought to reverse the WOTUS rule. On February 17, 2017, she led a letter signed by 40 members of Congress to President Trump urging him to take action against the WOTUS rule and other overreaching regulations. The President responded by issuing an executive order directing the EPA to reevaluate this rule. The EPA’s proposed new rule fulfills the President’s request and codifies a repeal of WOTUS.

US Sen John McCain on the Better Care Reconciliation Act: “As the Senate moves forward with negotiations on the Better Care Reconciliation Act, I will be working hard to include important measures that address the concerns raised by Governor Ducey and other leaders across our state about the bill’s impact on Arizona’s Medicaid system. Arizona has been nationally recognized for running one of the most efficient and cost-effective Medicaid programs in the country. This legislation should reward states like Arizona that are responsibly managing their health care services and controlling costs – not penalize them. I continue to believe we must repeal and replace Obamacare, which has hit Arizonans with some of the highest premium increases in the nation and left 14 out of Arizona’s 15 counties with only one provider option on the exchanges this year. But we must do so in a way that recognizes our state’s success, protects our economy, and ensures citizens who are most in need do not have the rug pulled out from under them.”

6-28-17 Briefs

Republican Briefs

Condolences to Sen Jeff Flake’s family on the loss his father, Dean.

Activist Sue Goodchild: The fire is causing lots of evacuations....so far I am fine but the Hwy 69 is closed from where Mortimer’s Farm is in Dewey (the old Young’s Farm) all the way to I-17 due to smoke ... Folks from Phoenix stay home as the road closure will be a major problem!!! Pray for rain or at least winds to stop!

President Donald Trump fans and other conservatives are invited to join the 10 am, Sat., July 1 Arizona Sign Waving event between 10-11:30 am., at 650 E Bell Road (7th Street/Bell Road) in Phoenix. The event is part of a MAGA National wide Trump/Pence support day. Participants are asked to bring your trump gear and support signs in support of Trump and Vice President Mike Pence, active military, veterans, place and first responders. Contact www.facebook.com/groups/1961294490780543 or www.facebook.com/groups/45150780856810

Activist James Albert: Some senators are now trying to get a bill passed to allow then to carry a weapon at all times, because of the threats. How about adding police offices to that bill also, Many officers receive death threats for sending criminals to prison .Why do senators have the right to protect them self when police officers and retired officers cannot? I believe police officer and retired officers have much more training in the use of weapons then senators. In fact some senators with a weapon would be a hazard to the general public in my opinion.

Hal Reed: 1. My mother in law asked if anyone has started a campaign to recall McCain2. Any word about the many postcards that were sent to President Trump some time ago? Thank you for the work that you do. Editor’s Note: Briefs is not aware of a current recall McCain campaign. We have received no feed-back from the postcards.

Marianne Ferrari LD20 PC and State Committeeman:  As treasurer, why would Jonathan Lines fail to call for the 2016 audit prior to the Statutory Meeting, as bylaws require? Was it simply incompetence? If not, then was Lines inattentive to, or often absent from his job? Or was he really just Treasurer-in-Name-Only? See Ferrari’s complete statement at 175-Days-And-Counting-Jonathan-Lines-In-Perpetual-Breach-Of-AZGOP

Aftermath-Of-Arlington-Gunfire-Society-Keeps-Sliding-Downward-So-Who-Gets-The-Blame (Excerpt from article) … Conservative GOP political strategist Constantin Querard told The Wanderer in a June 19 email: “Intolerance may have found a home on the left, but the rest of the country is not immune. We now watch media that reinforces our personal worldview, society continues to decay (which results in both poorer behavior and greater stress as the stakes appear higher), outside groups use ever-escalating rhetoric in an effort to motivate us to contribute or support the cause of the day, and the net effect of all of it is that a lot of people on all sides are losing their ability to debate or even speak with people of differing viewpoints. That’s intolerance and it is a growing problem.“It would be wrong to blast Speaker Ryan to call for unity after the shootings, instead of insisting that Democrats bend the knee and beg for forgiveness. I think the fact that that is your personal instinct reflects the degree to which you and so many others are so braced for combat as a full-time stance, that it becomes possible to lose sight of what is moral, right, or even simply decent. I have to guard against it myself,” Querard said. “Men are shot, one is possibly dying, so kneeling together to pray is the appropriate and right thing to do. Especially if you are a leader of the country, which the speaker of the House is,” he said.

Activist Stephen Sivigliano: Judge Jeanine was exactly right on when she used the words, "trickle down hate."  That is precisely what is coming from the media, including some guests on FOX, and almost all the dimmycrats.  Is all that rage, hatred, threats of violence perpetuated by the DNC and broadcast media, designed to convince some lunatic to try to kill Trump?  I suspect yes they are.  The pain of losing the landslide they expected has warped their minds and destroyed what little human conscience they may have left. After all, they worship at the altar of abortion, and constantly push for infanticide, doctor assisted suicide, withholding medical care for those who are deemed "too old" to deserve treatment, not to mention the muslimization of the world, reducing the population from 7 1/2 billion down to .5 billion, confiscating farms, ranches, mines, logging businesses, fishing businesses, and confining the "masses" into small geographic areas, pushing drug addiction,  all the while saying they are for the "little guy."  Perhaps the "little guy" they want to have power would be Hitler's clone, or Stalin's, Mao's, etc.  As every day goes by, I am more concerned about Trump's safety, even though he isn't the best spokesman for the pro-life community.

Jenny Beth Martin - Co-founder Tea Party Patriots: Mitch McConnell promised he would repeal Obamacare, “root and branch.”Those are his words, not mine. When he was running for office, he was quite clear: give us power, and Obamacare is gone. That’s why it is inexcusable for him to draft his health care bill in secret, and then unveil this watered-down “repeal bill” that is nothing more than a big government bailout for the health insurance industry. Tea Party Patriots are lighting up the Senate switchboard with calls from outraged Americans demanding changes to this flawed legislation. Tea Party Patriots are lighting up the Senate switchboard with calls from outraged Americans demanding changes to this flawed legislation, and we need your help to ratchet up the pressure before it is too late. Back in 2010, you and I were right when we warned that Obamacare will drive up health care costs, cancel policies, disrupt existing doctor-patient relationships, kill jobs, and add to the national debt. Well, I am telling you right now – if Republicans fail to repeal Obamacare and just tinker around the edges instead, then costs will continue rising, the deficit will go up, and the Constitution’s restraints on government power will be weakened even further.  We’ll be stuck with government-controlled health insurance forever.

A New Agreement Between Arizona And The Republic Of Korea allows Arizonans staying longer than a year to obtain driver licenses in that country without having to take written and road tests. Licensed drivers from South Korea will receive the same courtesy for stays in Arizona lasting more than a year. On Tuesday, Arizona Department of Transportation Director John Halikowski and Key Cheol Lee, the Republic of Korea consul general in Los Angeles, signed a memorandum of understanding formalizing a reciprocity agreement. Arizona has similar reciprocity with Germany and Taiwan, while reciprocity between Arizona and Canada exempts drivers from road tests but still requires the written test. Long-term visitors from the Republic of Korea who are at least 18 years old can now exchange South Korean driver licenses for Arizona driver licenses. They must have documentation showing they will be here for at least a year and that they have at least six months remaining on their stays. ADOT will coordinate with South Korean officials to verify an applicant’s driving status.

No Highway Construction Closures During Independence Day Weekend; Speed Limits Lowered On I-17 During Peak Holiday Travel Times During the Independence Day weekend, state and local agencies are focusing on keeping motorists safe and placing equipment and resources along heavily traveled highways to help move traffic should incidents occur. Motorists will play key roles in keeping traffic moving, too, by making smart driving decisions that won’t result in serious crashes that ruin road trips and create travel delays. The Arizona Department of Transportation and its contractors won’t schedule construction closures along state highways from Friday through late Tuesday evening. Drivers are urged to use caution over the holiday weekend in existing work zones and in three “holiday travel corridors” that will receive extra enforcement and resources to minimize travel delays. In an effort to reduce crashes and delays that result from speeding and driver inattention, speed limits will be lowered during peak holiday travel periods on a winding stretch of Interstate 17 north of Phoenix. ADOT will reduce speed limits by 10 mph Friday, June 30, on northbound I-17 between New River and Sunset Point Rest Area. Speed limits on the same stretch of southbound I-17 will be reduced by 10 mph on Tuesday, July 4. Temporary signs will advise drivers of the lower speed limits. For example, areas where the speed limit is ordinarily 65 mph will have a speed limit of 55 mph. Throughout the long weekend, temporary electronic signs will remind drivers how fast they are going. Congresswoman Martha McSally’s legislation to close the skills gap in our workforce passed out of the Natural Resources Committee yesterday by unanimous consent. H.R. 2053 will support schools, like the University of Arizona, that have mining programs which train and educate the next generation of mining and mineral experts. “Mining is fundamental to our economy and our national defense—supporting construction, electronics, and even advanced weaponry. However, our country has a shortage of mining engineers and very little resources are currently invested in institutions like the University of Arizona that train them,” said McSally. “By directing existing resources to support these universities, my bill will enable mining schools to hire the faculty they need to fill the skills gap in the mining workforce. I am pleased it passed committee today and will continue to push it through until this becomes a law.” Federal funding has dried up for mining engineering faculty since the United States Bureau of Mines was disbanded. Without federal funding, critical research has tapered off, making it difficult for new professors to conduct the research necessary to gain tenure. H.R. 2053, the Mining Schools Enhancement Act, will address the root of this problem by directing the federal government to distribute 70 percent of existing funding already made available through the Applied Science Tech Transfer Program at the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement to accredited mining schools. There are currently only fourteen mining programs in the nation, including the University of Arizona. Directing resources to these institutions to support research with allow these universities to tenure more faculty to train students to fill the mining skills gap. The House Natural Resources Committee passed the Mining Schools Enhancement Act with bipartisan support. To view the legislative text, CLICK HERE.

Congressional Western Caucus Chairman Paul A. Gosar’s in response to the Trump Administration’s release of a proposed rule that will kill the Obama Administration’s “Waters of the United States” (WOTUS) Rule by effectively re-codifying the Clean Water Act as it existed prior to 2015: “Today’s announcement is excellent news for communities throughout the country. The Obama Administration threatened the very livelihoods of farmers, ranchers, small businesses and water users when unilaterally enacting the job-killing WOTUS Rule by executive fiat. The Trump Administration has already made great strides in rolling back this unconstitutional mandate and I am thrilled to see EPA Administrator Pruitt continue that good work with today’s proposed rule. Western Caucus members look forward to working closely with the administration to put a nail in the coffin of Gina McCarthy’s water grab, “ said Gosar. Congresswoman Martha McSally, remarked, “WOTUS is a sweeping regulation written by unelected bureaucrats that would give the EPA jurisdiction over any type of body of water on private land—lakes, ponds, creeks, and even desert washes. I have heard from countless small businesses, farmers, and ranchers that this rule prevents them from doing their job, which is why I led dozens of my colleagues in Congress in writing to the Administration in February urging the President to reverse this rule for the sake of Southern Arizona and communities throughout the United States. I am pleased with the EPA’s decision to repeal the harmful WOTUS rule—and I know that Americans across the country are relieved by this news.” Congressman Andy Biggs stated, “I applaud Administrator Pruitt for his proposal to repeal the Waters of the United States (WOTUS) Rule, which was one of the most onerous rules from the Obama administration. WOTUS was opposed by over 200 organizations and local communities and would have had devastating effects on western states, including Arizona. This action provides another example that the Trump administration favors freedom and prosperity for our economy over regulatory outreach, and we join the administration in their efforts.”

U.S. Senator John McCain on the passing of Dean Flake, father of Senator Jeff Flake):“Cindy and I send our heartfelt condolences to Jeff, Cheryl, and the entire Flake family as they mourn the passing of an extraordinary man, Dean Flake. A beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Dean Flake devoted his life to family, raising his 11 children on a ranch, surrounded by their cousins, and teaching them the importance working hard and being humble. Dean was also deeply engaged in his community, and served as the mayor of Snowflake, on the Board of Arizona State Parks, and as a bishop at his church. Arizona will miss Dean Flake, but his legacy as an honorable family man and his contributions to our state will always live on.”
