1-29-17 Briefs

Republican Briefs

Editor Frosty Taylor  repcomm@cox.net       Web Master John Strasser

Congratulations to Jonathan Lines of Yuma, who was elected Chairman of the AZGOP yesterday, replacing outgoing, two-term Chair Robert Graham.

Early This Morning, Lines said, "Leading the Arizona GOP is an awesome responsibility and I will dedicate every day to growing our party, registering voters and raising the funds needed for victory in 2018. I'm hopeful that the toxic rhetoric and rank dishonesty that marred the last few weeks of the campaign will now stop. We are not the enemy. We need to remember that."

Congrats to Gabby Saucedo Mercer was elected to the secretary position, which will leave a vacancy in her former VC position. Lines will reportedly appointed a VC to replace Mercer early this week.

Food For Thought: A reader suggests that Lines should reach out in an “effort of unity” and appoint his challenger Jim O’Connor to the open VC position. Lines beat O’Connor by a mere 34 votes. During the campaign, Lines said he would only be in the Phoenix office two days a week. As VC, O’Connor (a former CEO) could oversee AZGOP HQ on the three days Lines is in Yuma running several businesses. This would utilize the talents of both men… and save the AZGOP the price of an executive assistant.

And Congrats To Robert Lettieri who is the new  party treasurer. Ironically Mercer and Lettieri were on the slate of Chairman candidate Jim O’Connor who lost the chairmanship to Lines 596 to 562.

Also Congrats To New elected Members-at-Large Rae Chornenkey, Marcus Huey and Lisa Gray. Chornenkey, an attorney, is the former chairman of the National Federation of Republican Women and is the current LD22 Chair.

LD23 PC Rev C. T. Wright has verified reports that LD23 leadership did not process the resignation of State Committeeman Ronald Smith when Smith sacrificed his position in December so Wright, an alternate, could be appointed as Smith’s replacement. Consequently, Wright – who gave the invocation at all of the Trump rallies in Arizona - was not credentialed and couldn’t vote yesterday.

Committee Chairs (Graham appointees) for the Jan 28 AZGOP Statutory meeting 1-8-17 Briefs archives are:

  • Barry Wong - Resolutions Committee,
  • Kathy Petsas - Bylaws Committee, and
  • Sergio Arellano - Nominations Committee.

All Four Proposed Resolutions passed. No proposed bylaws were presented; however, the bylaws will be reviewed within the next six months, according to reports coming in.

119 LD23 state committeemen were seated as of an agreement on the prior Thursday between outgoing Chairman Robert Graham and LD23 Chairman Nancy Ordowski. Below is the second letter than LD23 Chairman Nancy Ordowski signed to get her 119 state committeemen credentialed and seated with voting rights for yesterday’s AZGOP State Statutory meeting. See the “Letter of Understanding,” (the first of two letters she signed) at 1-28-17-briefs

Convention speakers included Gov Doug Ducey, Secretary of State Michele Reagan; Congressman Paul Gosar, Congressman Andy Biggs; Congresswoman Martha McSally, State Treasurer Jeff DeWit, Supt of Public Schools Diane Douglas and others.

Outgoing Chair Robert Graham was spotted in the line of Jonathan Lines backers during the nomination process, refueling speculation that Graham had hand-picked Lines to follow in his footsteps – an allegation both Graham and Lines both denied during the pre-convention campaigns.

Sen John McCain didn’t make an appearance yesterday’s convention. As you recall, McCain popped in a year ago and was heartily booed. McCain was censured during the 2014 Statutory meeting.

Call To Action From AZ AFP Director Tom Jenney: AFP-Arizona's Truth in Spending legislation (SB 1189 ) will be going to the Senate Appropriations Committee on Tues, Jan 31.Truth in Spending would require the Legislature to send out a press release any time it chooses to grow the state government's budget faster than the rate of growth of population and inflation. Please TAKE ACTION TODAY with our easy-to-use email system and let your legislators know that you don't want government spending to grow faster than your own family's budget! Another effective way to engage in state legislative policy fights is to enroll in the Legislature's Request to Speak (RTS) system. RTS not only provides Arizona citizens the opportunity to speak in a committee hearing at the Legislature, but also allows activists like yourself to sign in from home or work to put your name "for" or "against" bills that are working their way through legislative committees.  Please email me at tjenney@afphq.org to learn how to use RTS. Finally, thanks to Senator John Kavanagh for introducing the bill!

Chris Herring, Maricopa County Republican Party Chair, is calling for PCs to help Phoenix City Council candidate Chris De Rose (R) by walking for DeRose every Saturday between Feb 4 – March 12. Volunteers will gather between 9-10- am at AZGOP headquarters, 3501 N 24th St., in Phoenix. DeRose is running for the seat vacated by Bill Gates. Then a Democrat was appointed to replace Gates. Volunteers are asked to contact Whitney Lawrence Wnlawrence1@gmail.com. Also contact Whitney to have PCs set up to make phone calls from home.

Who Was the Real Margaret Sanger? will air at 6 pm (EST) Sat., Jan 29 on EWTN. The video is hyped as unmasking the contraceptive mentality and Planned Parenthood’s racist and eugenic roots. The goal is to teach high school students about the impact of abortion and contraception on society, about the connection between the eugenics movement and the Nazis, and about the ties between the sexual revolution and the destruction of the feminine genius in society. Feedback should be sent to Mary Flores at mflores@all.org. This special showing probably won’t appear on your TV daily schedule. (DIRECT TV is ch. 370, DISH is ch. 261, and COX is ch. 113)

Jana Jackson, former Maricopa County Supt of Schools candidate, will speak at the Feb 8 Arrowhead Republican Women’s luncheon about her new book "Forgotten Soldiers - Children of Carpi”. The story is about a group of African-American U.S. soldiers who buried Jewish children who had died from abuses while in concentration camps. The book will be available for purchase at the luncheon.

A Constitution Study Group for third graders through seniors will meet at 2 pm Feb 4, 11, 18, March 4 and 11 at American Family Education, 4833 E Southern in Mesa. $5 donation. RSVP to Verl Farnsworth  (480) 204-0964  or   vfarnsworth13@yahoo.com www.citcaz.com

CONGRESSIONAL STATEMENTS/ACTION

300 word limit policy. If statements exceed the limit, it will be edited

US Sens John McCain and Lindsey Graham (R-SC): “We are pleased by President Trump’s statement that he will defer to Secretary of Defense James Mattis’ view that torture, including waterboarding, is not an effective tool for obtaining information. In response to written questions from the Senate Armed Services Committee, Secretary Mattis said he ‘support[s] using the Army Field Manual as the single standard for all U.S. military interrogations.’ We believe this is now a settled issue.”

US Sen John McCain:“President Donald Trump’s call with Vladimir Putin is scheduled to take place amid widespread speculation that the White House is considering lifting sanctions against Russia. For the sake of America’s national security and that of our allies, I hope President Trump will put an end to this speculation and reject such a reckless course. If he does not, I will work with my colleagues to codify sanctions against Russia into law…”
