Republican Briefs

Schweikert Gets A Seat On One Of The Most Powerful Committees In Congress U.S. Rep. David Schweikert has a new seat on the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee, considered one of the most powerful and influential panels on Capitol Hill because it has jurisdiction over taxes, Social Security, Medicare and trade and tariff legislation. An enthusiastic Schweikert, R-Ariz., told The Arizona Republic that he looks forward to tackling tax reform, which he described as not necessarily just cutting taxes but rather overhauling the federal tax system "to maximize economic growth."

Brnovich, Mesnard, Graham-Use-Government-Resources-For-Petty-Party-Politics “The use of government resources for political purposes is expressly prohibited by Arizona law; that is unless you are Arizona’s top lawyer and the Speaker of the House provides you with a creative way to abuse your power and the law. This week, Arizona Speaker of the House J.D. Mesnard called on Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich to help out their political ally, outgoing chair of the AZGOP, Robert Graham, by issuing an opinion on the meaning of the word mail. In record-breaking speed, newly installed Solicitor General Dominic Draye issued an opinion in favor of Graham in which he found that the word “mail” means snail mail. The opinion will likely be used to try and eliminate competition for Graham’s chosen replacement, Jonathan Lines in the upcoming AZGOP state statutory organizational meetings coming up later this month.”

AZGOP Chairman Robert Graham yesterday announced the list of candidates seeking the Arizona Republican Party's top three elected officer positions. Additional nominations for these positions can be made from the floor at the party's January 28th Organizational Meeting, taking place at the Church for the Nations in Phoenix and starting at 9 am.

· Candidates for Chairman: Jonathan Lines, Jim O'Connor, Frank Thorwald

· Candidates for Secretary: Gabriela Mercer, Cindy Coleman, Marla Festenese

· Candidates for Treasurer: Eric Morgan, William Beard, Wes Harris, Robert Lettieri

Elected Republican State Committeemen from each of Arizona's 15 counties will attend the meeting to vote on these positions and other party business. A formal call letter will be mailed to all state committeemen at least ten days before the meeting. The state committee will also elect three members-at-large to serve on the state party executive committee, three from each of Arizona's nine congressional districts, with all candidates running from the floor. Graham appointed

  • Barry Wong to serve as Chairman of the Resolutions Committee,
  • Kathy Petsas to serve as Chairman of the Bylaws Committee, and
  • Sergio Arellano to be Chairman of the Nominations Committee.

The current tentative list of 1,235 state committeemen, including nominees not yet formally elected, is here:

LD's 12, 16, 17, 18, 23, 25 & 26 are conducting a combined meeting at 7 pm., Wed., Jan 11 at the Tri-City Baptist Church, main building's sanctuary, 2211 W. Germann Rd., Chandler, AZ 85286 to hear from candidates for the Maricopa County Republican Committee and Arizona State Republican Party Governing Board. Volunteers are needed at 6:30 to greet guests. Contact: LD17 Chairman Bill Moll.

Former Maricopa County Republican Committee Chairman Tom Husband hit the big 80 yesterday. “It’s been a long haul,” he jokingly commented.

LD22 PC Frank Johnson: A Note to Applicants - Please, folks… stop knocking other Republicans.  If you are running for an office just tell us briefly about yourself and what you want to accomplish/change.  We can decide who to vote for without your verbose comments about Republican opponents. Let’s start 2017 right.  Show some respect and support the entire Republican Party in Arizona… and nationally.

PC Boe James: Thanks for publishing Sheila Muehling's note and Nancy Ordowki's reply of "Sheila is not an officer and we had no authority to honor her request or that of the five unnamed others she wanted me to meet with." This is one of the craziest excuses I have ever heard.  It seems to me that unless prohibited by law or By-Laws the records and credentials should always be available to any member PC in the District.  Instead of asking where the authority is to release information, the question should be: "What authority does the LD have to withhold the information requested?"  and that should be applied to all info requests from PCs.

Arizona Town Crier Jim Ehl: It looks like Graham, much Like P. Obama, is doing his best to destroy the Republican Party in Arizona. The Arizona Revised Statutes lays out the political organization.  Then there is the AZ GOP bylaws which govern the AZ GOP.  While those bylaws state that other Republican organizations (LDs & counties) bylaws cannot conflict with the AZ GOP bylaws is one thing, but the AZ GOP bylaws goes on to say, “Duties of Elective Officers 1. Chairman The state chairman shall be the recognized leader of the state party and, in cooperation with the county chairmen, shall coordinate statewide party activities.”  Did Graham even think that this was a statewide party activity and coordinate with the 15 county chairmen??  Nowhere in the bylaws does it give the state chair the authority to interfere in another party’s business, unless something in the other party’s organization in their bylaws conflict with the state party bylaws..  But, don’t blame Graham too harshly!  Look at the state committeemen, chairmen, Executive Committee, AzRA that has set on their back side let him get away with his direction for years!  And the party even re-elected Graham two years ago.  Remember that old adage, ‘voters deserve the ones they elect.’ Oh, and remember, the voters voted for Brnovich and Mesnad.  So, who’s to blame for putting then in such a powerful position??

In An Exclusive Interview with CNN, Secret Service Director Joseph Clancy offers a wide-ranging look at the unique logistical challenges of providing security for the President-elect's large family and securing his New York residence. Clancy pushes back against suggestions his agents are running into conflicts with Donald Trump's private security team. "There is no friction at all," he insists, saying his agency has "sole responsibility" for protecting the President and the first family.

Trump After Intel Briefing: Hacking Did Not Impact Election Outcome Cyberattacks by foreign nations had “absolutely no effect on the outcome of the election," President-elect Donald Trump said in a statement following a briefing by senior intelligence officials on their assessment that Russia hacked the Democratic National Committee (DNC).

Briefs Sent Identical Questions to the three AZGOP Chairman candidates. Their answers will be posted every day until the Jan 28 Mandatory Meeting election. Question #6. How many PC's have you personally recruited and signed up?

JONATHAN LINES: It would be impossible for me to count the number of PCs I have recruited into the party over my decades of service to the Republican Party. I have been an active Republican since I was 10, have been walking precincts since Reagan’s 1980 Presidential campaign, a PC in Yuma for over 20 years and have canvassed and called countless numbers of homes on behalf of the GOP. Over this time, I’ve brought hundreds of PCs into the party… but perhaps as importantly, I’ve worked hard to keep all PCs engaged and welcome. I have done this by leading by example, following the rules, considering all viewpoints, and keeping the focus where it belongs: electing Republicans to office and pursuing a strong, conservative agenda.

I’m confident that I’ve recruited more PCs than anyone in this race, but to me, that isn’t the most important consideration. This is about making the case to the duly elected state committeemen: who do you trust to do the job as state party chair? Who do you trust to raise the resources needed to operate a strong and growing party; who do you trust to follow the rules as laid out by our party bylaws and state statute; and who do you trust to unify the party by welcoming all Republicans into our organization, and growing the GOP? And I’d urge the state committeemen to examine my record…you don’t have to wonder how I’ll lead, just look at what I’ve done as an active Republican and committed conservative. And note that PCs in Yuma are unified in supporting my candidacy.

JIM O’CONNOR: During the 14 month appointment window from February, 2015 through March, 2016, our LD 23 leadership team under my direction recruited 135 new PC’s.   I also referred dozens more to District Chairman throughout Maricopa County over that same time frame. I really like that part of the job.

FRANK THORWALD: Over the years 100’s.

Briefs Sent MCRC Chairman Candidates identical questions so you can get to acquainted with both candidates. Candidates are limited to 300 words for their response. Question #3: What positions of leadership have you held? What non-elected roles have you participated in?

"Non-Elected Roles" include: appointed LD24 representative for Phoenix City Council District 4 and Secretary (pro-tem) for newly-formed MCRC City of Phoenix Committee (MCRC CPC); appointed LD24 representative for MCRC Resolutions Committee (for upcoming MCRC Statutory Meeting); appointed member of Credentials Committee at 2016 AZGOP State Delegate Convention; volunteer at multiple Republican candidate campaigns, Republican-themed, -sponsored, -endorsed campaigns, and volunteer at other Republican and Patriotic organizations.
