Circulating the Internet: The President-elect won the election with less than 40% of the popular vote but had the majority of electoral votes. The Republican Party had put forth a candidate to win several crucial states that could swing the electoral college. The election was a bitter one with the Democratic Party fractured between two candidates. The incoming President received so many death threats that he chose to arrive in Washington in secrecy. The security for the inauguration was the tightest ever with troops stationed on buildings throughout the day. This was an unprecedented amount of protection for any President-elect. Many members of Congress chose not to attend the ceremony. Despite all this Abraham Lincoln was sworn in as our 16th president on March 4, 1861.

Congressman Trent Franks following the decision by the owners of the Navajo Generating Station (NGS) to negotiate with the Navajo Nation on the future of the plant: "It is my hope that the owners of the Navajo Generating Station (NGS) can reach an agreement with the Navajo Nation to allow operation of the plant until the end of 2019 and not be forced into early closure.  Obama-era environmental regulations, a reduction in demand for coal power, and low natural gas prices are putting extreme pressure on coal plants across the US. A solution that balances these realities in the energy market with serious local economic impacts must be found. I am committed to working with all of the stakeholders on a path forward, especially as it relates to potential opportunities to keep the plant open beyond 2019."

Congressman Paul A. Gosar after introducing H.R. 1042, the Responsibility in Federal Contracting Act, which would require the calculation of wages for public works projects be based on actual wage statistics calculated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). “In order to begin chipping away at our massive $20 trillion federal debt, elected leaders must search for bold ideas to solve this spending crisis. It begins with creating a culture of eliminating federal waste, fraud and abuse, from top to bottom. A great place to start is reforming the calculation used for determining wages for public works projects which currently costs American taxpayers around $13 billion more than it should. The current fundamentally flawed calculation dates back to the 1930’s and is riddled with fraud and abuse as evidenced by multiple IG and Government Accountability Office (GAO) reports. Overall, these wage rates average 22% above market wages—inflating the cost of federal construction projects, keeping employers from hiring more workers, and locking low-skilled workers out of many construction jobs for which they could otherwise be hired. This bill facilitates competition, equality, accuracy and transparency for everyone while restoring a fair wage for a fair job that is fair to the American taxpayer.”

Congresswoman Martha McSally :  I met with local military retirees, public officials, citizens groups, and more last week including

·         Discussing health care with members of Alliance4Action from Green Valley

·         Military retirees at Fort Huachuca’s Retiree Appreciation Day

·         Sierra Vista Mayor Rick Mueller about growing the local economy and border infrastructure

·         Douglas Mayor Robert Uribe about expanding the Douglas Port of Entry and other local issues

·         Briefing from Arizona@Work about the services they offer for employers and employees in Cochise County

·         Members of National Federation of the Blind of Arizona recently on issues related to accessibility, higher education, and employment.

Congresswoman Martha McSally introduced the Halt Tax Increases on the Middle Class and Seniors Act, a bill to reverse a tax hike contained in the Affordable Care Act. The idea for the bill came from a constituent, Green Valley resident Loren Thorson, who passed away last year. Last Congress, the bill passed the House 261 – 147 with 25 Democrats supporting. “First, Obamacare raised taxes on middle class families,” said McSally. “Now, seniors are being handed the bill for the failing law’s unsustainable costs. Americans deserve better. My thanks to Congresswoman Sinema for joining again in this fight to protect Arizonans. I look forward to working with her to get this bill through Congress.” Bill text HERE.

Sen John McCain celebrating the 105th anniversary of Arizona’s statehood: “One hundred and five years ago, on February 14, 1912, the State of Arizona was officially admitted to the Union. Today I join the entire Grand Canyon State in celebrating the 105th anniversary of Arizona’s statehood and reflecting on the enormous growth and important progress that has been forged by generations of citizens who proudly call this place home. “In little more than a century, Arizona has flourished from humble beginnings to the thriving center of the Sun Belt as it is known today. Arizona’s diverse resources and business-friendly environment have attracted top employers that continue to create jobs for our people and boost our economy. The natural wonders of Arizona – from the majestic Grand Canyon, to the scenic red rocks of Sedona, to the iconic sandstone towers in Monument Valley – draw visitors from around the world who are captivated by our state’s awe-inspiring beauty. All of us lucky enough to spend time in the Grand Canyon State would agree with the late Senator Barry Goldwater who once called Arizona, ‘113,400 square miles of heaven that God cut out.’ I am immensely proud of the growth and prosperity of the great State of Arizona over the last 105 years and believe our best days are yet to come.”

Sen John McCain: “I’m deeply saddened by the passing of Burton Kruglick, an influential Arizona leader and American patriot who dedicated much of his life in service to our state and nation. After enlisting in the Army at the age of 18 and deploying to Europe during World War II, Burt and his family moved West to take advantage of the vast opportunities in the growing city of Phoenix. In addition to building successful businesses, Burt committed himself to bettering the community by devoting countless hours to a wide array of civic and service organizations – from the Phoenix Boys and Girls Club and Arizona State University, to the Navy League and the Arizona Shelter Service for the Homeless. But Burt is perhaps best known for his leadership of the Arizona Republican Party, serving in multiple capacities, including three terms as Chairman. Arizona has greatly benefited from Burt’s many contributions to our great state, and we continue to keep Burt and the entire Kruglick family in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Sen John McCain, Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, on Russia’s deployment of nuclear-tipped ground-launched cruise missiles in violation of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty: “As Vladimir Putin continues his testing of the new administration, Russia’s deployment of nuclear-tipped ground-launched cruise missiles in violation of the INF Treaty is a significant military threat to U.S. forces in Europe and our NATO allies. Congress has made clear in the last two defense authorization bills that Russia’s treaty violation requires a meaningful response. In light of the most recent developments, it is time for the new administration to take immediate action to enhance our deterrent posture in Europe and protect our allies. More broadly, we must continue the ongoing modernization of U.S. nuclear forces and ensure that NATO’s nuclear deterrence forces are survivable, well-exercised, and increasingly ready to counter Russian nuclear doctrine, which calls for the first use of nuclear weapons.”

Sen John McCain, Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, on the resignation of National Security Advisor Michael Flynn: “I thank General Flynn for his many years of distinguished service to our country, especially his invaluable contributions in the fight against terrorism. I wish him the very best in his future endeavors. At the same time, General Flynn’s resignation is a troubling indication of the dysfunction of the current national security apparatus. As our nation confronts the most complex and diverse array of global challenges since the end of World War II, it is imperative that the President select a new National Security Advisor who is empowered by clear lines of authority and responsibility and possesses the skills and experience necessary to organize the national security system across our government. As Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, I look forward to working with the President’s administration, especially Secretary Mattis, to defend the nation and support our military service members.”
