Reports Are Circulating that the AZGOP hasn’t turned over the Secretary minutes and the Treasurer’s report to newly election Secretary Gabby Saucer-Mercer and newly elected Treasurer Robert Lettieri. Here is a message from Lettieri and Compliance Director Timothy Lee: “The AZGOP is currently under Audit pursuant to our Bylaws. There will be no movement of anything until the Audit is underway and sufficiently compliant with normal business standard operating procedures. All records of the business of the AZGOP are housed at and maintained at 3501 N 24th Street Phoenix, AZ 85016. No business records of the AZGOP shall at any time be removed from the offices of the AZGOP for any reason; and neither shall there be copies made of what is otherwise proprietary property of a private organization. I would suggest, here, that it is time for education classes. Oh, and by the way, we start them on Saturday at 9AM. Please avail yourselves of this important training offered free of charge by the AZGOP.” Lee, a former long-time AZGOP treasurer will be teaching the Saturday class. In an extremely rare rebuke, Sen. Elizabeth Warren was instructed to take her seat after clashing with Majority Leader Mitch McConnell during Sen. Jeff Sessions' confirmation debate on Tuesday night. McConnell determined the Massachusetts Democrat had violated a Senate rule against impugning another senator. The ruling means Warren will be barred from speaking on the floor until Sessions' debate ends, McConnell's office confirmed. "She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted," McConnell said on the Senate floor. The emotional exchange occurred during debate on the nomination of Sessions to be attorney general. Warren was reading from a 1986 letter from Coretta Scott King, the widow of Dr. Martin Luther King, which was critical of Sessions, who was then a nominee to be a federal judge.

PC Rich Rutkowski: The lead comment in the 2/6/2017 MCRC Briefs made an interesting observation about Gabby Saucedo-Mercer's election as AZGOP Secretary.  A careful reading of Arizona Republican Party bylaws and the pertinent sections of Arizona Revised Statutes reveals no requirement that she resign her position as AZGOP Second-Vice Chair (not "First Vice-Chair" as indicated in the comment), to which she was elected in January, 2016.  In other words, there appear to be no statutory or bylaw restrictions to her holding both offices.   Editor’s Note: Ooops, vice chair titles got scrambled in the 2/6/17 Briefs. Saucedo-Mercer was errantly referred to as the First Vice Chair, when she indeed is the Second Vice Chair. Parralee Schnider is the 1st Vice Chair and Chris Campbell is 3rd Vice Chair.

Neal Jurney: We need to avoid all this bickering in the AZ Republican party.

LD28 Rep Maria Syms: Education is the great equalizer.  As the daughter of a poor immigrant and a public school teacher, I am a living example of the opportunity that comes with a quality public school education.  That education started for me with Mrs. Whatley in Kindergarten – where I spent a good amount of time learning to read on the Dick and Jane books in her classroom. More than a mere introduction to school, Mrs. Whatley’s kindergarten classroom set me on a path to a lifelong love of learning.  Reading was my gateway. I am now proud to raise three school-aged children in a state where Governor Ducey’s budget recognizes the need to expand full day kindergarten for Arizona’s neediest students.  As a former preschool board member, I have witnessed the importance of early childhood development to future success.  A positive relationship between full day kindergarten, third-grade reading ability and high school graduation rates is undeniable. If we are truly committed to education as the great equalizer, we need to support the Governor’s effort toward higher literacy rates and further expansion of full day kindergarten.  Preparing Arizona’s youngest students for success today, guarantees a brighter tomorrow for us all.

Secretary of State Michele Reagan and the Arizona Capitol Museum (AZCM) will officially open a new exhibit titled “The Surreal Life of Fife Symington III” at 10:30 am., Thur., Feb 9 at the AZCM annex. Governor of Arizona from 1991-1997.  Early in 2016, as former Arizona Governor Symington was considering the writing of his life story, he discovered a footlocker belonging to his mother Martha.  Encouraged by his biographer and friend Dr. Jack August, Fife opened the case, which proved to be an invaluable self-contained archive of family history and personal mementoes.  Among the documents found are letters Fife sent home from Harvard, correspondence from an actual Lady in Waiting at Buckingham Palace to Symington’s mother, as well as a note from Fife’s ‘Uncle’ Stewart encouraging his decision to enter public service.  Thanks to Dr. August (who passed away in January), this trove has become the centerpiece of the new AZCM exhibit. Also featured: Fife’s Bronze Star for Meritorious Service during the Vietnam War, a cast bronze relief of his Great Grandfather Henry Clay Frick, yearbooks from his days as a student at Gilman Prep and Harvard, as well as campaign ephemera capturing Symington’s years in politics.  This survey will allow the public to view Fife Symington’s life experience as a dynamic timeline.

John McCain Has Emerged As A Leading Republican Dissenter (Boston Globe) The veteran Arizona senator and 2008 Republican presidential nominee has taken an unusual role as the new president’s highest-profile Republican critic, his pointed pushback keeping stride with the dizzying pace of controversies Trump has set in his first two weeks.

The Senate confirmed Elisabeth DeVos as Education secretary by a 51-50 vote, after Vice President Mike Pence cast the tie-breaker, allowing the Trump administration to overcome two GOP votes against her.

Impeach-Judge-James-Robart-For-Violating-Sovereignty-And-Constitution It’s still hard to believe we now live in a country where a district judge can demand that we bring in refugees from state sponsors of terror and failed states saturated with terrorists and no data systems during a time of war. It’s almost unfathomable that a district judge, an institution created by Congress, can overturn long-standing refugee law and bar the federal government from prioritizing persecuted religious minorities for refugee resettlement. All in contravention to statute, numerous clauses of the Constitution, the social contract, the social compact, popular sovereignty, jurisdictional sovereignty, and 200 years of case law…

Jon Riches, Director of National Litigation – Goldwater Institute: Of all the rights Arizonans cherish, the freedom to earn a living or enter a new profession receives the least protection under the law. Unfortunately, regulatory agencies too often thwart the intent of the Legislature by applying restrictions to business activities they’ve not been given statutory control over. SB 1437, The Right to Earn a Living Act, remedies this concern by requiring regulatory agencies to show some legitimate public harm before blocking individuals from a profession. SB 1437 is based on a simple premise: The burden of proving that government restrictions on free enterprise are excessive should not be placed on those who want to earn an honest living; instead regulators should bear the burden of justifying their restrictions. Congressional Western Caucus Chairman Paul A. Gosar after the House successfully passed H.J. Res. 44 by a recorded bipartisan vote of 234-186, legislation which seeks to block the rule submitted by the Bureau of Land Management commonly known as Planning 2.0: “I am elated to see the passage of H.J. Res. 44, a bill that rolls back yet another costly and out-of-touch Obama Administration regulation. The Bureau of Land Management’s Planning 2.0 rule takes planning decisions away from local governments and instead allows these important decisions to be made by bureaucrats in Washington who are not familiar with our land, water or communities,” remarked Chairman Gosar. “This new Obama rule opens the floodgates to special-interest groups by allowing them the same amount of input as those whose daily lives are impacted most by these decisions. Planning 2.0 is a significant departure from the planning process that has existed for more than three decades and allowed significant local government involvement. With the nullification of this tone-deaf regulation, state and local governments will, once again, be empowered to best manage their public lands to ensure optimal use and good stewardship.”

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ)  regarding his vote to confirm Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education on Tuesday, Feb. 7: “Betsy DeVos has been an advocate for school choice and believes that every child should have the opportunity to receive a quality education, regardless of their zip code. I was pleased to vote for her confirmation as Secretary of Education, and I look forward to working with her to roll back the federal government’s reach into education and allow states and localities to determine what’s best for their students.”

Sen John McCain, Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, on Amnesty International’s new report titled, "Human slaughterhouse: Mass hangings and extermination at Saydnaya prison": “The appalling revelations that the Assad regime has hanged more than 13,000 Syrians at a secret prison in a murderous campaign to crush all political dissent should outrage people of conscience everywhere. What is so sickening about Assad’s war crimes and crimes against humanity at Saydnaya prison is not that they are shocking, but that they are such predictable atrocities. From chemical weapons to barrel bombs to a simple noose, Assad will resort to any form of butchery he believes necessary to preserve his dictatorship. After five years and 400,000 Syrians killed, it is time for the international community to abandon the absurd fiction of a political solution that leaves Assad in power. The Syrian people will not accept as their leader a man who has inflicted such savagery upon them. Bashar Assad does not belong in a palace in Damascus. He belongs in a jail cell in The Hague.”

Sen John McCain: “So today, I offer my most heartfelt prayers for the recovery of Vladimir Kara-Murza and for the success of the cause to which he has dedicated his life: truth and justice for the Russian people. And I do so with the confidence Vladimir himself once expressed: ‘I am sure that in the end we will win, because even when dictators prevail for some time, sooner or later, freedom wins.’” –Senate floor

Congresswoman Martha McSally: The Democrats haven't wasted any time targeting me. A liberal progressive group called Swing Left has launched an all-out attack on 52 competitive seats that could flip in 2018 in an effort to win back a majority in the House — and my name is at the top of their attack list. I'm working in Washington to support bold Republican reform for our country, but this group is determined to stop us. That's why I'm asking for a big favor from you. I don't take this request lightly and I wouldn't be asking if we weren't on the front line of keeping the House. We are always mindful of Nancy Pelosi plotting my demise in a divided district like mine, so we must show early and consistent strength. The next 2 years are going to be a long and hard battle and I am ready for it. I'm in Congress so I can fight for and enact real change. I'm not in Congress so I can continue to ask for money to fight back against the attacks thrown my way. With major issue items like Obamacare, border security, tax reform, and rebuilding our military on the table, we can't afford to be distracted by liberal political attacks. Your monthly donation will ensure I'm able to continue our strong campaign and can focus all my attention on the important issues facing our country. I hope I'll be able to count on you.
