James Alberts: Did you happen to see Jeff Flake on TV Making a statement about hiring border patrol agents Flake claims that applicants are not able to pass the polygraph. Prior drug use seems to be the problem, therefore he suggest we relax the standards . Yes let’s put prior drug users on the border to stop the drugs from coming into America. I say it’s time to retire Flake , put him in charge of cleaning the rest room in circle K in Snowflake!

State Committeeman, LD 20 Marianne Ferrari: I want to enthusiastically congratulate the new conservative activist group in Prescott, Mobilization of Conservatives (MOC), for their fearlessness and gallantry in counter-protesting against the Leftists who besiege McCain’s and Gosar’s offices in Prescott, every Tuesday at 1 pm. They are the first example I've seen of what I consider to be a powerful new wave of conservative grassroots activism. For years, I've watched us Tea Partiers continue to age, fearing that I was watching the last light in the nation beginning to die out. But these Great Ladies of Prescott prove that we are NOT the last enlightened Americans. We were the beginning! MOC clearly represents a second wave of dedicated patriotic activism that's arriving at the perfect time--in the midst of the Trump Revolution—with a totally different point of view, from the one the Tea party started with. They KNOW we can defeat progressivism, and knowing that really energizes them! They will not be denied. Theirs is a totally new kind of determination than was possible for us, starting, as we did, in the much darker time, as Obama took the presidency. The conservative movement welcomes their energy, great new ideas, and willingness to speak up to save America! Bravo, Myrna, Julie, Reina, and Rose!

Mark Lewis, Director Central AZ Project, Representing Maricopa County and not the BOD: Obama’s war on coal is still taking victims with the planned shutdown of 2 massive coal plants in AZ, and more are on the way.$126 billion in unfunded EPA mandates are costing 155,000 jobs in the US. The reason this is happening is because of two dark green forces, 1) Over building Solar in California and 2) Unfunded carbon reduction mandates by the EPA.

Trumps ability to drain the massive job destroying energy regulations of the past 8 years is dependent on our PC’s ability to support his efforts. When you follow the money, behind the war on coal, you get to see a clear picture. Seems the environmental groups, and using a “Sue and Settle” method to bypass the Congress and enrich their green agenda, is very profitable. See Louisiana Senator David Vitter expose on the millions in profits the Green environmental groups received from the Obama environmental overreach. Greens make 41% profit by suing Obama and settling for an unfunded mandate that is not approved by congress or the states. Please support the Sunshine for Regulatory decrees and Settlements Act by signing the petition here.

AzCDL Legislative Update: The status of proposed legislation we are monitoring can be found on AzCDL's Bill Tracking page. The following are updates on bills whose status has changed this past week or have hearings scheduled in the coming week.

  • HB 2216, which would make it unlawful to "require a person to use or be subject to" electronic firearm tracking technology, was held by the Senate Government committee pending introduction of a possible amendment.
  • SB 1122, which would prohibit the search of any federal or state database as a requirement for transferring personal property (like your firearms), is scheduled for a March 14 hearing by the House Federalism, Property Rights and Public Policy (FPRPP) committee.  Please log in to your Request to Speak (RTS) accounts and urge the committee members to vote for its passage.  Click here for instructions on using RTS.  If you are an AzCDL member and need assistance in setting up or activating your RTS account, contact Fred at treasurer@azcdl.org.
  • SB 1159, the AzCDL-requested "gun free zone liability" legislation, passed out of the House Judiciary and Public Safety committee on March 8.
  • SB 1344, which would remove the authority of political subdivisions to regulate firearms possession of employees and contractors on their personal property or vehicles, also passed out of the House Judiciary and Public Safety committee on March 8.
The next step for SB 1159 and SB 1344 is a House Rules committee review.  Following that they will need to pass House Committee of the Whole (COW) hearings and Third Read floor votes. March 24 is the next major deadline for legislation to remain active this session.  That's when all House bills must be heard in Senate committees and all Senate bills must be heard in House committees. These alerts are a project of the Arizona Citizens Defense League (
    AzCDL), an all-volunteer, non-profit, non-partisan grassroots organization.

CONGRESSIONAL STATEMENTS/ACTION

300 word limit. If statements exceed the limit, it will be edited

Congressman Andy Biggs: –The Department of Homeland Security has reported that illegal border crossings from January to February decreased by 40 percent (31,578 to 18,762 illegal aliens). The historical trend of apprehensions typically increases 10 to 20 percent from January to February. Biggs reaction: “February’s border crossing numbers demonstrate the overwhelming success of the administration’s border security and immigration enforcement policies. A country with porous borders is a country whose sovereignty and security are at constant risk. I am grateful that President Trump recognizes the necessity of securing our borders and enforcing our nation’s laws. President Trump has entered the White House on a mission to keep his promises, and he has surrounded himself with leaders – like Secretary of Homeland Security John Kelly – who know how to deliver results. Congress can also do its part to codify the actions from the Executive Branch by passing legislation to secure our border, give our border agents resources to complete their jobs, and protect innocent Americans. I continue to fight for the passage of “Grant’s Law” to ensure that criminally violent illegal aliens are not released from detention while they await deportation proceedings. We are beginning to see positive outcomes from our efforts, and I am committed to working with my colleagues and the Trump administration to fully achieve our goals.”

US Sens. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.) today joined Fox & Friends to open voting in their #SourSixteen Tournament of Waste. The March Madness-inspired #SourSixteen tournament is a yearly culmination of each senator’s ongoing efforts to highlight egregious and unnecessary federal spending. Watch their interview here.

Congressman Andy Biggs on February Surge in Private Sector Jobs: This week, ADP Research Institute reported that the United States added 298,000 private-sector jobs in February – the first full month of the 115th Congress and the Trump administration. According to the report, expectations for new jobs was originally set at 190,000. Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody’s Analytics, credited the job numbers to anticipation of “tax cuts and less regulation.” Biggs statement: “This month’s job report is extremely encouraging and proves that the federal government is on the right track towards achieving sustained economic success. In the first two months of the 115th Congress, we have worked to reset the nation’s regulatory climate to free the American economy from the constricting rules of unelected bureaucrats, and we are already seeing positive results. I will continue working to help facilitate similar job-creation trends, roll back overreaching regulations, and pass a meaningful tax reform package to give financial relief to American families and businesses.”

CITY COUNCILMAN SPEAK OUT

300 word limit. If statement exceeds the limit, it will be edited.

Phx Councilman Sal DiCicci: For years, the City of Phoenix has been quietly diverting money away from schools and giving it to large developers for projects like new apartments. It's plain and simple corporate welfare and I've consistently voted against this practice. This tax transfer is called Government Property Lease Excise Tax aka (GPLET). Worse yet, as the Mayor and Council voted to take these needed monies from schools, they also set up a "lease scheme" allowing Phoenix to profit. See my report below on how Phoenix profited by approximately $45 million while denying schools of
critical funding.

Here is how it works: Since the City of Phoenix doesn't pay property taxes, Phoenix takes over the project from the developer and then "leases it back" to the developer----taking it off the tax roll. After many years of not paying any property taxes, the project gets handed back to the developer. It's that simple folks. Developers benefiting from GPLET's pay no property tax while similar properties directly across the street are paying a significant tax increase by covering the share of the abated property tax.

Remember, schools get their funding from property taxes. Schools aren't the only ones who get hurt by this scheme. Small business owners, who don't have a GPLET, now have a higher tax bill subsidizing their competitors.     Although I believe this practice should be totally banned, I've worked with Rep Vince Leach to strictly limit its use. And the Goldwater Institute has just filed a court action to stop this insane and unfair tax scheme. Here is a spreadsheet documenting how Phoenix profited over schools (click on image to view in larger format).
