Republican Briefs

Editor Frosty Taylor  repcomm@cox.net      Web Master John Strasser

Briefs Will Be Taking the weekend off to entertain a large group of out-of-state relatives. Briefs will resume its regular postings early next week. - ft

It Is With Deep Sadness and Regret that Briefs posts yesterdays’  passing of former Republican National Committeewoman Sharon Giese. Services are pending. Giese was elected Arizona’s RNC committeewoman in 2004. She was a member of the AZGOP Executive Committee, state committeewoman, precinct committeeman, member of the Mesas Republican Women, AZ Federation of Republican Women, National Association of Parliamentarians and past president of the Arizona State Association of Parliamentarians. Loraine Pellegrino, president of the Arizona Federation of Republican Women remembers Giese “was one of the first people I met when I got involved in politics.” Former Maricopa County Republican Chairman Lyle Tuttle, comments, “She was a straight shooter and a good person.” Always the perfect lady, she will be missed by many. Services were held for  her husband Rev Burton Giese last Saturday. -ft

Yesterday was Stephen Lemons aka “The Feathered Bastard’s” last day at the Phoenix News Times. After 13 years at PNT, he is moving to Montgomery, AL where he has taken a position as an investigative journalist with the Southern Poverty Law Center. While some of the GOP view “the lefty” as a “annoyance” because of his constant digging for hidden news, readers found his “pull no punches” commentary often offers insight into the underbelly of the Arizona political scene. As one GOP PC commented yesterday, “He always responded to texts quickly, always wrote the truth on stories, dug around til he found answers & gave us the whole enchilada. That's good investigative journalism.” While his writing was hard-hitting, graphic and salty, he was always a soft-spoken, well-mannered gentleman in Briefs contacts with him over the years. May he have much success in his new adventure.- ft

Jeff Greenspan: SpendingTracker.org from the Coalition to Reduce Spending - The Coalition to Reduce Spending is dedicated to advocating for reducing federal spending and balancing the budget. They have produced an innovative tool that conservatives have waited a long time for.  It ranks spending based on each individual Congressman's and Senator's AYE votes on spending bills that are signed into law.  Therefore, it tracks their real votes (not the ones they like to claim they were against that go nowhere and they like to use for political cover for their bad, real votes.). It is very easy to use.  Here's a link to the rankings, but you can also search by your own district.  Just pay attention to the sort criteria.  It's easy to resort rankings just by clicking on "Score".  It appears that  our own Jeff Flake and John McCain are both quite high spenders when ranked against peers and ranked against other Republicans.  Jeff Flake and John McCain's successful votes have resulted in both of them voting for spending an amount approximately equal to what the notorious Barbara Boxer of California voted for. Help Prevent Wildfires Along Highways. Like a lot of Arizona these days, the hillsides along State Route 87 south of Payson look mighty green after a wet winter. But that didn’t stop a brush fire from breaking out last week after a vehicle dragging chains threw sparks off the roadway, backing up traffic as first responders addressed the blaze. “Everyone can help prevent fires,” said Jesse Gutierrez, the Arizona Department of Transportation’s deputy state engineer for statewide operations. “That starts with making sure your tires are properly inflated, being careful not to park over tall grasses and ensuring that chains aren’t dragging.” During the winter and spring, ADOT crews mow vegetation along highway shoulders. Crews also remove brush, thin trees and spray fire retardant within the ADOT right-of-way to prevent fires and slow the spread of those that occur. But motorists have an important role as well:

  • Don’t park in tall grass, as the heat from parts under your vehicle can start a fire.
  • Make sure nothing is hanging from underneath your vehicle and dragging on the pavement.
  • Dragging chains during towing can cause sparks. Never substitute parts when towing.
  • Check tire pressure before you travel. Exposed wheel rims can cause sparks.

ADOT participates in the “One Less Spark One Less Wildfire” campaign that the U.S. Forest Service and other land management agencies launched to focus on the role drivers and homeowners play in preventing wildfires.

CONGRESSIONAL STATEMENTS/ACTION

300 word limit. If statements exceed the limit, it will be edited

Congressman Paul A. Gosar joined several of his House colleagues in calling on the White House to completely withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement: “President Trump ran his campaign on the idea of putting America’s interests first. He can fulfill that pledge in a big way by using his authority to completely withdraw the United States from the misguided Paris Climate Agreement. This unconstitutional treaty is nothing more than an extension of the Obama Administration’s ideological war on affordable energy.  This liberal pipedream abdicates our sovereignty in favor of a global redistribution of wealth. Furthermore, this scheme was designed to favor our economic rivals like China and India by giving them until 2030 to reduce emissions while the United States front-loaded our costs at the expense of American jobs. President Obama had to pull off Olympic-level legal gymnastics to mislead Americans into thinking the Paris  Agreement wasn’t a treaty because he knew this charade would never pass the U.S. Senate. Spending nearly a trillion dollars per year to reduce the global average temperature in 2100 by a third of one degree defies common sense and is a terrible business decision. Thankfully, we have a new deal-maker in the White House who puts America first. It’s time to put this bad deal to bed once and for all.”

Activist Milvia Stokes: Is there an anti-American ‘shadow government’ being run from the Obama’s mansion in DC with the help of added resident Valerie Garrett, just in time to rescue the former President from his dirty, vindictive deeds toward President Trump and team? Is socialism and the “Browning of America” on the menu, too? Some Republican Senators need to put their narcissism and personal vendetta aside and work united toward the Republican plan to make a better American for all.

Ana Henderson, Pima County Republicans First Vice Chairman: Why Democrat-Controlled Tucson City Council Continues To Fail Citizens - In 2015, Tucson's Mayor and Council proclaimed: "Since the Great Recession, the City’s General Fund budget has been structurally unbalanced,” and, "On-going operating costs continue to outpace revenue growth”and, "Action taken by Mayor & Council this Fiscal Year have improved our financial situation going forward."

Improved Our Financial Situation - How? The City’s General Fund Budget for FY 16/17 included a deficit of $ 25.6 Million after appropriating $ 58.4 Million to items listed as "Other Services" and $24.7 Million in "Debt Service."

Debt Service - the current proposition FAQ section states, "In 2012, city voters approved Proposition 409 which provided $100 million in General Obligation Bonds to restore city streets." (Prop 409 street bonds program ends in 2018.) Councilmember Kozachik is asking YOU to pick up the tab by taxing you once again, in a Special Election this May - ballots being mailed now, AND he is asking you to Judge Him On His Record....

Tom Jenney - Americans for Prosperity update: In the past two weeks, Governor Doug Ducey and majorities of legislators have taken several very important steps to protect Arizona taxpayers, entrepreneurs and families. Here is a brief summary of actions taken in the past two weeks:

     1. Most importantly, Governor Ducey and a slim majority of Legislators have passed universal eligibility for Arizona's system of Empowerment Scholarship Accounts (ESAs), which will use parental choice to improve the quality of education offered to our students, including students at our low-performing district schools - a big step in the right direction. To learn more, go here.

     2. Governor Ducey and your legislators have passed the Goldwater Institute's Right to Earn a Living Act, which will empower citizens to fight back against rules by regulatory agencies that harass would-be entrepreneurs. And, our friends at the Institute for Justice have a good blog post explaining how Governor Ducey has been using executive orders to fight back against regulatory overreach.

     3. The Arizona House of Representatives has set forth the broad outlines of a state budget proposal for the coming fiscal year, totaling approximately $9.850 billion. That would be within the range of a population-plus-inflation increase over last year's budget of $9.609 billion, which would qualify for bonus points for fiscal responsibility on AFP-Arizona's 2017 Scorecard.

Overspending in last year's budget was the main factor causing Ducey and most of your legislators to end up in the "Needs Improvement" and "Not Bad" categories on our 2016 Legislative Scorecard. If Ducey and Legislators can keep budget growth restrained and avoid raising any gas taxes, they'll end up as Champions of the Taxpayer on our 2017 Scorecard.  To help stop any gas tax hikes, please take action now  To view the scoring rubric for our 2017 Legislative Scorecard, check out AFP-Arizona's 2017 Legislative Agenda.
