5-15-17 Briefs

RNC Passes A Resolution Honoring The Life And Memory Of Sharon Giese, Arizona’s long-time Arizona Republican RNC Committeewoman, who passed away this spring.

Whereas, On April 19, 2017, the Republican Party lost a true friend in Mrs. Sharon Giese of Arizona, a thoughtful leader and respected advocate:

Whereas, The Republican National Committee wishes to remember and honor Sharon Giese for her commitment to Republican candidates and causes in Arizona and across the country;

Whereas, Sharon Giese served with distinction as Arizona’s Republican National Committeewoman from 2002 until her retirement in 2016;

Whereas, She served as President of the Arizona Federation of Republican Women from 1992 to 1993 and was a supporter of and parliamentarian for the AFW and NFRW for many decades;

Whereas, She served several years as the official professional parliamentarian for the Chairman of the Republican National Committee as well as the AZGOP Chair at various meetings and conventions for over a decade;

Whereas, She was a delegate to Republican National Conventions in 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016, held multiple positions in the Arizona Republican Party, supported Republican Teens, was an elected precinct committeewoman, member for many years on AZGOP Central Committee and a Presidential Elector in 2016.

Whereas, She was a thoughtful and consistent spokesman for The Republican Party and much beloved by her fellow members on The Republican National Committee; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That her friends on The Republican National Committee are proud to honor the life and legacy of Mrs. Sharon Giese for her tireless and devoted service to our party and our country and extends our condolences to all of her friends, family and loved ones.

The Yuma County Republican Committee meeting is scheduled at 7 pm., May 23 - the fourth Tuesday of the month in the Goodwill meeting room at 3097 S 8th Avenue in Yuma.

Yuma County PCs Connie Uribe and Russ Clark have announced their candidacy for the Yuma County Republicans Chairmanship – to replace Chairman Jonathan Lines, who was elected AZGOP Chairman in January. See Uribe and Clark announcements below:

Connie Uribe - Yuma County Republican Chairman Candidate: This isn't about me. It's about what's best for the Party. Last November I was approached by members of the GOP dissatisfied with the current leadership, and they asked me to consider running. At that time they had already done the PC math, so to speak, and the numbers were in favor of our current Chair by a hair under the best of circumstances. What surprised me was the decline in the number of PCs over the past four years, our ranks dwindling down by a third! Granted, we had lost a couple to natural causes, but I feared most of the decline was due to poor leadership. Also, the behavior of our leaders and former leaders during the past two election cycles shows how the leadership of the Central Committee has been ignoring the principles of the Republican Party and shirking its duty in upholding conservative values. The meeting that re-elected our current Chair was not run according to our bylaws, and when the Chair realized he couldn't serve both the State and the County positions, I felt I had to accept the nomination. The true conservatives asked me to run and, if elected, I will do my best to serve.

Russ Clark - Yuma County Republican Chairman candidate: I have the time, drive and desire to serve as Chairman of the Yuma County Republican Party. The Chairman will have to work with a diverse group to be effective. My background and experience opens doors for me in all sectors throughout our community and I would provide the leadership to grow the party in sectors that are not well represented. Many of the people that belong to the Republican Party don't feel they have a voice locally. We must reach out to our members while recruiting new members. The Yuma County Central Committee caters to a small group of well financed members because of fear of losing donations. I want to continue supporting this group but not at the exclusion of the rest of our members. It is time for a different direction, but not one that puts one group against another. We have witnessed well-meaning Republicans that will support their ideology at all cost. They generally have an all or nothing mentality which can create division in our party and failure to move forward. We need leadership that can blend the desires from all. I want the Republican Party to be more visible. President Donald Trump understands the power of reaching out to the media to help correct misinformation or inform. I plan on increasing the visibility of the party in our community. The visibility will open doors to growth. Fund raising is always a concern. Our Committee has relied on generous donors to help us with our projects. I want to see more events like Lincoln Day Dinner fund the Party's needs. We need to increase our Precinct Committeemen, by being more open and visible. We will have to knock on doors to introduce ourselves and identify potential new committeemen. I have gotten hundreds of signatures for many candidates. I am committed to improving our party and have the experience and aptitude to get it done.

LD25 will hold a special ‘open to the public’ meeting at 7 pm., Thurs., May 18 to address Anti-Sexual Trafficking, according to Chairman Ian Murray. Speakers will be AZMen Arizona Anti-Trafficking Executive Director Kathleen Winn and Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery. Murray said, “Many of us have had our head in the sand and are unaware of bad the trafficking is in Arizona. If you have children or your friends have children, I encourage you to come and learn. The more prepared we are, the better we can protect our kids.” Contact Murray at or (602)524-7786.

Top Dem: ‘This-Is-John-McCain’s-Finest-Hour' Rep. Adam Schiff (D) of California on Friday, saying the Arizona Republican's vocal criticism of President Trump marks his "finest hour." "I think frankly this is John McCain's finest hour," Schiff said on HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher." …" I wish we had more Republicans in the House, or maybe even one in the House, who is willing to follow his example."

Brian Reilly, Former LD 22 PC: I’d like to reply to non-Arizona resident Wayne Blair’s 05/5-7-17-briefs comments regarding the Judicial Watch fundraising letter. arizona-sheriff-releasing-400-criminal-illegal-immigrants-every-10-days. The most important part of the letter for Judicial Watch is a link button called “DONATE.” The more fear that Judicial Watch places in the hearts and minds of its readers the more the DONATE button will be activated by its readers. The Judicial Watch readers are told that during a 10 day period, 40 illegal immigrants are released per day. In reality, according to the MCSO, approximately 7 detainees have been released per day during a 90 day period. Why are detainees being released? Sheriff Penzone is following the legal advice of our Republican Maricopa County Attorney who is following the orders of the U.S. District Court. The MCSO Director of Public Information wrote the following to me: “Due to the activities of the former Sheriff, which were found by the U.S. District Court to be a violation of the 4th and 14th Amendments to the Constitution, MCSO is not permitted to engage in immigration enforcement. Any change in that practice … will have to be approved by the U.S. District Court. That includes seeking 287(g) status, which was pulled from this office from the Department of Homeland Security back in 2011.” Sheriff Penzone has been shackled with a legal mess at the MCSO, thanks to his predecessor. While I did not vote for Mr. Penzone, I can certainly appreciate the challenges that he is facing, in his attempt to return professionalism, accountability and the rule of law to our MCSO. Editor’s Note: Blair is a former Maricopa County GOP PC.
