5-17-17 Briefs

Congressman Paul Gosar will hold a conference call with CD4 constituents at 3:30 pm., Thurs., May 18 at  (515) 739-1423;139127 Contact: Penny L. Pew - District Director & Intergovernmental Affairs  928-308-2033.

Fox News calls in a “Specialist” See JD Hayworth on FOX today at 2 pm.

LD11 State Representative Vince Leach will run for the LD11 State Senate seat in the wake of his seatmate Sen Steve Smiths’ announcement that Smith is running for Congress. Leach ran for office as a strong defender of taxpayers.  In his second term as State Representative, Leach notes that he has built a reputation as a common-sense conservative with a solid voting record on economic, family, and public safety issues. "I have genuinely enjoyed my time in the State House, but with so many important issues often coming down to very few votes in the State Senate, it is important to keep our district’s conservative representation in that chamber as well." said Leach. Leach complimented Smith on the job he has done.  “Steve has been an outstanding State Senator and I’m confident he’ll be an outstanding Congressman.  It will be my honor to continue the great work he’s been doing here at the State Capitol.”

Marianne Ferrari, LD 20 PC and State Committeeman: I don’t live in Yuma, but I feel honor bound to comment on Dr. Connie Uribe, a candidate for Yuma County Republican Chairman. Connie is a skilled physician, a no-nonsense/common-sense thinker, a bona fide longtime grassroots conservative, and a person of conscience and courage. Her ethics stand sky-high, above the venality we’ve so often seen in our state party politics. As we all must know in spades, by now, it really does matter who serves as county chair. I personally know that Connie Uribe will be a forthright and energetic county chair who actively wants to do right, and will do right. Her clarion voice at the executive committee meetings will throw a welcome beam of cleansing sunlight onto that slip-slidey rubberstamp affair, which I personally witnessed, with dismay, last February. Under the current leadership, registrations are down, as conservative voters all over Arizona have become so demoralized with the state of our party that many are becoming independents. Our party is also losing PCs statewide! Connie has vowed to reverse that trend in Yuma County, and she is one person who will do it! Losing PCs is a very important problem that the current leadership seems to have….well, “overlooked,” shall we say. Connie, on the other hand, has an attribute that is in short supply, these days: Connie is a woman of her word.

AZGOP Executive Director Matthew Kenney to PCs: Early last Sunday morning, Mesa City Councilmember Ryan Winkle was arrested on suspicion of DUI.  If guilty, this will be his SECOND DUI.  He previously did jail time for an Extreme DUI in 2009. According to police reports, he almost hit pedestrians, and was observed swerving and almost hitting the curb by police.  When he was caught, he lied about drinking, and he refused a breathalyzer test.  His wife admitted they had been drinking, said that Winkle was "obviously intoxicated" and tried to use his position as "the only Democrat on the Mesa City Council" to get them off the hook. listen here. One DUI is too many, let alone two. Almost everyone knows somebody who has been killed or injured by a drunk driver.  We expect our elected officials to model good citizenship.  And when they lose the moral authority to lead, they should resign. Instead of condemning his behavior, the Democrats are circling the wagons around Mr. Winkle and have launched an email campaign to try and make the city council think that the citizens of Mesa don't care about multiple offenses of drunk driving and that Winkle should be let off the hook.  This is embarrassing behavior.  It is a non-partisan office, and city leadership should be about integrity, not party loyalty at all costs. If you are a Mesa resident please take the time to call and email all of your councilmembers and respectfully but firmly let them know that they should call for Ryan Winkle's resignation, and if Winkle doesn't resign, they should vote to remove him from the council. May 30 Is The Deadline To Comment on the Arizona Department of Transportation’s (ADOT)recommended plan for the next five years of construction projects. The third public hearing for the Tentative Five-Year Program is scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday, May 19, in the ADOT Auditorium, 206 S. 17th Ave. in Phoenix. The monthly State Transportation Board meeting will follow the public hearing. The Tentative Five-Year Program outlines proposed projects and improvements to the state highway system over the next five years. The program is updated annually and designates how much local, state and federal funding is allocated for projects for highways, bridges, transit and aviation. Many of the major projects in this Tentative Program focus on improving some of Arizona’s busiest corridors. Better mobility means better daily commutes and travel for everyone. Improved roads also enhance freight movement, trade, commerce and economic development, all of which benefit the quality of life statewide. The complete report of all proposed projects is available at azdot.gov for review and comment until 5 p.m. on May 30. The Tentative Program is available for public review and comment at azdot.gov/FiveYearPlan, where a “how to read it” guide is available. Van’s Political Crossroads will air at 3 pm., Wed May 17. Talk show Host Clair Van Steenwyk says the new show is basically issue driven program. He says DC operators are in a melt down over changes they see President Trump implementing in the Executive Wing; and some so called sources are releasing fake news to try to discredit President Trump  to cause distrust among his staff & supporters and thereby have the desired result a failed 1st term.  I do believe that this is also helped by some in the GOP who are still hoping that President Trump won't run for a 2nd Term. We the People can’t allow them to succeed, with the aide of the Democrats. Please Contact the White House and let them know we're still behind President Trump and the Wall, Supporting Police, Military, Trade Deals etc.” See http://tobtr.com/s/10024769

CONGRESSIONAL STATEMENTS/ACTION

Congresswoman Martha McSally: District Director CJ Karamargin in response to recent threats made against the Congresswoman - “Our community should be deeply disturbed by these threats of violence. Threatening to shoot a member of Congress between the eyes and stating that her days are numbered is sickening. It is especially sickening here in southeastern Arizona because we know, perhaps better than any congressional district in the country, what happens when threats of violence become acts of violence. The January 2011 shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was followed by a national discussion about the importance of civility and respectfulness in our public debates. The vicious threats made against Congresswoman McSally are a sobering reminder of just how important that discussion continues to be. We can disagree about issues and policies. We should have robust debates about the future of our country. But threats of violence cross a clear line. These threats against Congresswoman McSally should be a wake-up call for us all. On behalf of Congresswoman McSally, our office would like to thank the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Tucson for their swift response to these threats. They are true professionals and we all feel safer as a result of the steps they’ve taken.” CJ Karamargin has served as Rep. McSally’s District Director since she took office in January 2015. Prior to working for Congressman McSally, CJ Karamargin served as Communications Director for Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords from January 2007 to July 2011, including the day she was shot on January 8, 2011.

Congressman Andy Biggs announced his office’s partnership with Southeast Veterans Affairs (VA) Health Care Clinic in Gilbert, to expand service and outreach to East Valley veterans. Biggs’ district staff will be at this clinic on the first and third Wednesday of each month in Room 1120 from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm. Congressman Biggs released the following statement: “Since I took my oath of office, my staff and I have been looking for ways to provide more comprehensive and efficient services to veterans in Arizona’s Fifth Congressional District. In addition to the teams located in our District and D.C. offices, we desired to provide a convenient location for veterans to receive assistance with federal benefits at the same time they see their doctors. This satellite office opening sends a clear message to veterans that our office will find innovative ways to prioritize their care and wellbeing. I am grateful for the Gilbert VA’s partnership and look forward to working with them to ensure that our veterans are treated with respect, decency, and a commitment to excellent service.” Contact - Director of Veterans Services Lee Huff at lee.huff@mail.house.gov or (480) 699-8239.

U.S. Senators John McCain (R-AZ), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Chuck Grassley (R-IA) sent a letter recently urging Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Mick Mulvaney to use existing executive authority to lower prescription drug costs, including by certifying the importation of prescription drugs from Canada. On January 9, 2017, Senators McCain and Klobuchar reintroduced the Safe and Affordable Drugs from Canada Act to require the Food and Drug Administration to establish a personal importation program that would allow individuals to import a 90-day supply of prescription drugs from an approved Canadian pharmacy.

U.S. Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), and Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) yesterday reintroduced the Fair Accountability and Innovative Research (FAIR) Drug Pricing Act, bipartisan and bicameral legislation that takes the first step in addressing skyrocketing prescription drug prices by providing transparency of pharmaceutical corporations that plan to significantly increase drug prices. U.S. prescription drug spending reached a record high of $425 billion in 2015, accounting for almost 16.7 percent of all U.S. health care spending, with expectations that spending will surpass $600 billion by 2020.

CANDIDATE STATEMENTS

US Senate candidate Kelli Ward: In the race for the Republican nomination for the Arizona Senate, globalist Sen. Jeff Flake and populist Dr. Kelli Ward took opposing positions over Donald Trump’s decision to fire FBI director James Comey. Flake, who reportedly considered voting for Independent candidate Evan McMullin in the 2016 presidential election and opposed Donald Trump’s candidacy, joined a number of Democrats and anti-Trump Republicans in questioning the timing of the firing, tweeting: “I’ve spent the last several hours trying to find an acceptable rationale for the timing of Comey’s firing. I just can’t do it.” Meanwhile, Ward, an avid Trump supporter who previously ran against John McCain, voiced her support for Trump’s decision, arguing that it was part of his plan to “drain the swamp. President Trump continues to honor his pledge to ‘drain the swamp’ with his recent firing of FBI Director James Comey. Send a message to President Trump telling him you support his decision by taking action below,” she wrote on her website. She went on: Democrats and Jeff Flake are suffering from Trump derangement syndrome. Republicans and Democrats agree that Mr. Comey was the wrong person to lead the nation’s premiere law enforcement agency because, by politicizing his position, he lost the confidence of those who worked for him. The liberal talking point regarding ‘timing’ is simply another way to attack our President, who has proven once again that he means business. The pair will face each other in the Senate Republican primary in 2018.

US Senate candidate Kelli Ward: A challenger to Sen. Jeff Flake in the 2018 Republican primary took a verbal swing at the senator after he questioned the timing of the decision to fire former FBI Director James Comey. In a statement, Dr. Kelli Ward — who lost the 2016 Arizona Republican primary to U.S. Sen. John McCain — said Flake’s uncertainty was unfounded. “Democrats and Jeff Flake are suffering from Trump derangement syndrome,” she said. Earlier this week, Flake tweeted that he could not think of a rational reason to fire Comey at this point in President Donald Trump’s administration.
