5-3-17 Briefs

Editor’s Note: Bear with us folks – we are working on some cyber gremlins problems. Many of you have recently called or e-mailed wondering about the irregularity in Briefs posting/notifications. We are experiencing some technical difficulties that we hope to overcome soon. Activist Bruce M Piepho is asking those protected by the Cochise County Sheriff’s office to attend the 3 pm., May 3 Board of Supervisors meeting at 415 Melody Lane, Bldg. G, in Bisbee to draw attention to the lack of salary increases in 12 years. He writes, “The Cochise County Board of Supervisors have not seen the necessity to provide a salary increase in 12 years for merit or to meet market driven personnel salary increases. In my opinion this is a display of incompetence, disrespect to all citizens, and flat out disgrace to all.  Our elected government must place a priority on citizen safety. Twenty percent average salary increases from 2007 to 2017 have been provided to federal and local law agencies, Federal Law Enforcement Agents (GS12) and the Sierra Vista Police officer salary increased 23% from 2007 to 2017. TWELVE years of falling behind have cost a loss of trained deputies to other agencies with the departing deputies receiving $15,000 to $20,000 salary increase to leave the Cochise County Sheriff Office. Worse yet is the lack of staff. 90 deputies each cover an average of 66.7 square miles. Sierra Vista 66 police officers cover an average of 2.3 sq miles, Douglas 34 PD - .3 Ave sq mi, Benson 16 PD - .3 and Wilcox 10 PD average cover .6 sq miles. Spread out thinly over the border and county the Cochise Sheriff Office protects the county, the state of Arizona and the nation for border security. Piepho points out “Recently a truck load of drugs was intercepted by U.S. Border Patrol just North of Tombstone, AZ possibly headed toward your state or your county. Cochise County Sheriff deputies work diligently with the U.S. Border Patrol to stop drug trafficking, human coyote trafficking and illegal immigrant crossings. Additionally my Sheriff works as a leader in Arizona and National to secure “OUR” borders. Send support messages to Cochise County Adminstrator Edward T. Gilligan egilligan@cochise.az.gov , Cochise County Clerk arios@cochise.az.gov , Sheriff Mark Dannels MDannels@cochise.az.gov , Ann English aenglish@cochise.az.gov , Peggy Judd busbarn@vtc.net , Pat Call pcall@cochise.az.gov

Activist Bob Richards: English colonist first landed in America at Cape Henry 26th April 1607 and on May 13th 1607 established at Jamestown Virginia, the first permanent English settlement in America. A Memorial Cross marks the spot maintained to this day by U.S. Parks Dept. America’s destiny & purpose were sealed with that cross at Cape Henry. All that would follow in our nation’s growth hinged on the single proclamation that this land belonged to Jesus Christ.  What's happening in Washington D.C now?

Members of Congress, clergy, & others now meet on Capitol Hill regularly for Bible study & prayers. Vice President Mike Pence & many of President Trump’s Cabinet members participate in a weekly Bible study led by Capitol Ministries founder Ralph Drollinger, (7’2”) who has played in the NBA now says “when the leaders are seeking God, the nation is in a position to be blessed by God in ways that are far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think”. An open invitation remains for others to meet with this Fellowship in D.C. The Vice President has been open about his faith. In fact he frequently describes himself as “a Christian, a conservative, and a Republican in that order”. A refreshing profile for a Vice President now serving our Nation in the traditions of British founders of Cape Henry decades ago. Pray for this Fellowship of believers. They have a vision of God lacking in our Nation. Thank them for inspirations beyond themselves.  And what can we do?  Here's God's plan. 2 Chronicles 7:14 “If my people, who are called by My Name, shall humble themselves and pray, and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” That’s “Hope For Our Nation”.

Maricopa County Supervisor Clint Hickman: I was honored to attend the Sun City PRIDES Arbor Day event last month. Eleven donated trees were planted in the roadway medians at 110th and Peoria Avenues in memory of PRIDES members who passed away during the past year. Crews with the Maricopa County Department of Transportation dug holes for the trees and secured them once planted by PRIDES volunteers. The Sun City PRIDES are a volunteer group that helps clean and maintain the Sun City streets, parkways, and medians in Sun City, which saves county taxpayers thousands of dollars in maintenance costs. Arizona Town Crier Jim Ehl: In the 4-30-17 Briefs Russell Sias, La Paz County Chairman writes: I have been harping on our bylaws and our lack of adherence to them. Some of you have given me the following information. In the previous four years of the former state chairman; his first year, he had the three executive committee meetings as prescribed by the bylaws. In his second year, he had just two of these three required meetings. In his third year, he had but one meeting, and in 2016, he didn’t have any. This fits with the time I have been on the committee. It was also reported that the budget slide show flashed by so quickly that few had the opportunity to understand what they were seeing. This smacks of top down leadership. The pertinent bylaw: “The executive committee shall approve the annual budget and review and counsel the state chairman on all programs relating to the state party. The executive committee shall meet at least three times each year.” It seems that Sias is the ONLY county chairman with enough backbone to point that out!  There is no apparent remedy for violating bylaws except to point it out in a ExCom meeting and vote on it.   And when was that ever done with the state chair being the chair of the ExCom?  One can’t blame Graham or Lines for doing their thing. They didn’t achieve their position by force, or coercion.  We have 14 other county chairmen who seemingly sit back on their ‘pity  pots’ and play ‘BMOC’  in their county while showing little regard for the state AZ GOP being run by one man!  Come on, County Chairmen, and get behind Chairman Sias.   For the County Chairmen who feel that they cannot work as a team should own up to that fact, resign and let a leader in that county step forward!!

CONGRESSIONAL STATEMENTS/ACTION

(300 word limit. If statements exceed the limit, it will be edited)

Congressman Paul A. Gosar after the American Conservative Union Foundation (ACUF) released their 2016 scorecard which gave the Congressman an 100% score for his “commitment to conservative values: “It’s easy to get lost in the political double talk from politicians these days. That’s why I always ask constituents to judge me by my results, not my speeches. For this reason, I am especially proud to be recognized by the American Conservative Union Foundation for having a perfect Conservative voting record that reflects the principals of limited government and individual liberty. The ACUF understands that bold action from Congress is the only way to solve real problems with Conservative solutions.” Click HERE to read the full 2016 ACUF ratings for the 114th Congress. (From the American Conservative Union Foundation)ACUF researched and selected a range of bills before Congress that determine a member’s adherence to conservative principles. We selected bills that focus on Ronald Reagan’s philosophy of the “three-legged stool”: 1) fiscal and economic: taxes, budgets, regulation, spending, healthcare, and property; 2) social and cultural: 2nd amendment, religion, life, welfare, and education; and 3) National Security: preserving our nation’s security by maintaining a strong national defense. The wide range of issues covered are designed to give citizens an accurate assessment of how Members of Congress best defend the principles of a free society: Life, Liberty, and Property.

Yesterday, Congressman Andy Biggs announced the submission of two amendments to the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2017. One amendment appropriates $1.4 billion for construction of a wall along the international border between the United States and Mexico. The second amendment prohibits any funds appropriated in the resolution from flowing to Planned Parenthood Federation of America, any affiliate or clinic of Planned Parenthood, or any successor of Planned Parenthood. Biggs said: “I was disappointed to learn that the recently negotiated omnibus compromise did not include sufficient funding for a border wall and doesn’t prevent taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood. Building the wall and defunding of Planned Parenthood were two central promises repeatedly made by Republicans, including me, on the campaign trail, and I hope that the omission of these items will be corrected. These two issues represent more than mere campaign promises; rather, they are vital to our national and domestic security of millions of innocent Americans. A country without borders – and a border wall – is a country whose sovereignty and security are at risk. A country that does not value and defend the sanctity of life has lost its way. These two funding battles are fights worth having, and I am committed to following through on the promises I made to my constituents by offering these amendments for consideration.”

Congresswoman Martha McSally: The Douglas Port of Entry is vital to our local economy and our national security--it now accounts for nearly $4 billion in trade through two-way truck traffic. Last year, more than 1.6 million cars and 3.8 million people crossed into the United States from Mexico at Douglas Port of Entry, and Department of Justice statistics show that approximately 90% of the illicit drugs smuggled into the United States come through ports of entry. Despite these economic opportunities and security challenges, it has been over 20 years since the Douglas port was last renovated and it is severely outdated, overburdened, congested and woefully inadequate to keep up with this steady climb in activity. week I called on U.S. Customs and Border Protection to accelerate the Douglas Port of Entry modernization project and to construct a new port within 5 years. It's time to make these upgrades a reality and I will continue to work with the new Administration until the expansion is complete.  To read my full letter to the administration, click HERE. To read the Sierra Vista Herald's articles this past week on my work at the federal level to improve the port, click HERE and HERE

Congresswoman Martha McSally: Lawmakers Are Not Above the Law: Striking Healthcare Exemptions for Congress -- In America, lawmakers are not above the law. Members of Congress should be treated no differently than other Americans struggling to afford health care. Last week I introduced a measure that would prevent Members of Congress from exempting themselves from the American Health Care Act. Representatives should have to abide by the very same options for coverage as their constituents, and anything short of that is simply hypocrisy. Congress must live by the rules it creates. ARIZONA OFFICIALS

(300 word limit. If statements exceed the limit, it will be edited)

Sen Sylvia Allen: Thanks to Governor Ducey for signing my bill, SB 1042 teacher certification; reciprocity.   I truly believe that when we can lessen regulations and streamline processes, we will unleash the human spirit.  I hope this will encourage many educated professionals to enter the teaching profession. I recently received a letter from a teacher in which she makes excellent points "…statistics mean something and we have used them to drive ourselves towards improvement.  However, in entering this race with the country and the world we seemed to have lost sight of the finish line.  Testing, cramming, studying, and hours of homework have flooded our school systems in attempts to raise standards and gauge student success.  In the grand scheme of things, I believe this tedious method has done more damage than good.  Students in our state are not growing in knowledge or in themselves but they are growing in stress and weariness.  Curriculum is no longer challenging students to think but teaching them how to compute.  Information goes in just as quickly as it goes out. The greatest people in our history were not successful because of their ability to pass standardized tests or complete generic packets and worksheets.  They were great because of the originality, wellness and finesse of their minds.  It is those aspects of a student's mind that our education system should focus on." I totally agree with her. Finland leads the world in student testing scores; however, there are no mandated standardized tests in Finland, apart from one exam at the end of a student's senior year in high school.  There are no rankings, no comparisons or competition between students, schools or regions. One Finland teacher said, "We prepare children to learn how to learn, not how to take a test, we know much more about the children than these tests can tell us." The only conversation we have about Arizona education system is FUNDING.  I long to have discussions with the education community about real reforms that will help children to learn and how we can improve our education system.
