5-4-17 Briefs

Former Sen Russell Pearce: Wimpy And Incompetent Congress, Promises Made, Promised Not Kept: Why are we surprised? Can’t repeal Obamacare as promised. Can’t defund Planned Parenthood as promised. Can’t defund the all of the PBS subsidies. No border wall. No penalty for cities and Sheriffs who refuse to enforce our laws. And now another Democrat budget by a Republican Congress. More money for corrupt baby killers Planned Parenthood, more money for the dangerous and stupid refugee program, more money for EPA and no money for the wall, clearly a wimpy and incompetent Congress. Liberals are still in charge. Congress should be defending Constitutional government, the Rule of Law, federalism, protecting innocent life, state’s rights, free speech, secure America, cutting spending and a pass a pro taxpayer budget. Get out of the business of stealing one’s property taxpayers earn and re-distributing it to those that did not earn it. It is called THEFT. Apparently it does not really matter who has the majority in Congress. While we have Paul (Rino) Ryan and others working behind the scenes with the open border Democrats against America and the Rule of Law it won’t happen. I am sick and tired of weak kneed politicians that refuse to keep their promises to the American people and to secure our borders, deport every single illegal alien in the U.S, control spending, defend the Rule of Law, State’s Rights, traditional marriage and families, defend the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and put Americans First. I will not vote for anyone who does not put America first, and fully support enforcement efforts. Illegal immigration is the #1 cost in lives, lost jobs, crime and all because of the illegal alien invasion. Continued at www.russellpearce.com

Kevin McCarthy: US GOP Majority Leader: Don’t-Believe-Fear-Mongering-Plan-Pre-Existing-Conditions-Covered In an attempt to induce panic, Congressional Democrats—blindly echoed by some in the media—have begun to assert the false narrative that the American Health Care Act won’t cover people with pre-existing conditions. This is a completely dishonest distortion of the truth that is being used demagogically to defeat efforts to repeal and replace Obamacare not with arguments, but with fear. It is a clear and simple fact that Obamacare’s federal mandates are not the only way to cover people with pre-existing conditions. In fact, by forcing insurers out of the marketplace, Obamacare will de facto leave people with and without pre-existing conditions uncovered. After all, if nobody is left to sell insurance in the individual market, people won’t have insurance, no matter what the letter of the law says. The American Health Care Act will cover people with pre-existing conditions. Here’s how:

1. Competition and market forces will lower premiums, making health care easier for people to afford.

2. Those who still have trouble affording health care will receive refundable tax credits according to their need to help them purchase insurance.

3. Nobody will be charged higher premiums if they keep up their coverage.

4. Nobody can be denied coverage.

5. And for all the concern about states receiving waivers from Obamacare regulations, every state that makes that choice will receive hundreds of millions of dollars to fund high-risk pools that cover costs for those with pre-existing conditions—including $8 billion provided for in the Upton amendment, set aside to bring down premiums and out-of-pocket costs for the small group that could have fallen into the gap.

That isn’t just protection for people with pre-existing conditions—that’s a five-layer defense. To claim or imply that our plan doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions is a lie. The American Health Care Act will cover those with pre-existing conditions while decreasing the cost of health care overall and resurrecting an insurance marketplace that provides people choices they can afford. That’s much better than Obamacare’s dead-letter deal.

Congresswoman Martha McSally attended the Commander-in-Chief Trophy Celebration in the Rose Garden yesterday. Each year, the President awards the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy to the season's winner of the American college football series among the teams of the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, and U.S. Air Force Academy. The Air Force Falcons defeated the Army and Navy teams last season, as well as in 2016. Prior to the past two years, they last won the trophy in 2002. “As the only member of Congress to graduate from the U.S. Air Force Academy, I was honored to be in the Rose Garden today to help present Commander-in-Chief trophy to the Air Force Falcons. I also appreciate the President’s acknowledgement of my tireless efforts to save the A-10,” said McSally, former Air Force A-10 squadron commander. During the speech, President Trump recognized Rep. McSally’s work to defend the A-10 and her own service in the Air Force. Clip of President Trump recognizing Rep. McSally (CLICK HERE to download, click image to watch on YouTube)

Congressman Andy Biggs voted NO on H.R. 244 – Consolidated Appropriations Act. Biggs released statement: “For the first time in 10 years, Republicans are in control of the House, the Senate, and the White House. We should be optimistic about moving a conservative agenda forward, but we have failed to keep our promise to repeal Obamacare and have followed that up by surrendering to the demands of the Democrats by producing a bill that spends over $1.1 trillion to fund government. While the United States is nearly $20 trillion in debt, I am flabbergasted that the Republican Party would promote a bill that does nothing to address out-of-control spending or deficit reduction. As we tackle a number of major issues in the 115th Congress, I hope the capitulation on this bill is not a foreboding sign that Congress will be willing to cave, compromise, or kick the can down the road in every case. I will continue to fight to uphold the commitments I made to my constituents.” Biggs-On -Consolidated-Appropriations-Act

Sen John McCain on the passing of Lt. Col. Leo Thorsness: “I am deeply saddened by the passing of my dear friend and fellow POW, Lt. Col. Leo Thorsness. One of the greatest honors of my life was serving with Leo, a man whose service exemplified selfless duty and devotion to others. Leo earned the Medal of Honor for his heroism in a daring combat mission in North Vietnam in 1967 when he flew directly into hostile territory on dangerously low fuel in an attempt to rescue his comrades who had been downed in an attack. Just two weeks after that courageous mission, Leo’s aircraft was shot down and he was taken captive by North Vietnamese soldiers. Leo would spend the next six years imprisoned, including a full year in solitary confinement, and endure unspeakable pain and suffering because of his steadfast adherence to our code of conduct. But Leo never let this experience break his spirit, and inspired the rest of us with his patriotism, perseverance, and hope that we would someday be free. After returning home, Leo continued to live a selfless life of service – as a volunteer, state senator, and public speaker with a simple message: ‘Do what’s right—help others.’ I am forever grateful for Leo’s generosity, friendship and example, and along with Cindy, send my heartfelt condolences to Leo’s wife Gaylee and their entire family as we bid farewell to a genuine American hero.”

Congresswoman Martha McSally’s legislation to address staffing shortages along the border today passed the Committee on Homeland Security. The legislation is McSally’s fifth bill related to national or border security to be favorably reported from the committee since January. “All of the technology and infrastructure deployed along the southern border is useless if we do not have a well-trained agent or officer present to make an arrest, interdict a drug load, screen cargo from a country of concern or speed legitimate transit through a port of entry,” said McSally, Chairwoman of the Border and Maritime Security Subcommittee. “My commonsense, bipartisan bill expedites the hiring process for certain, well qualified applicants who have already proved themselves trustworthy in the military and in law enforcement — boosting our national security with trained manpower and bringing good jobs to our local economy. I’m pleased to see this bill move out of committee and I’ll continue working to bring it up for a vote by the full House.” Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is critically understaffed and well below its congressionally mandated staffing levels by more than 1,000 Officers and 1,800 Border Patrol Agents. The Anti-Border Corruption Reauthorization Act of 2017 will allow CBP to alleviate the immediate staffing shortage along the border by quickly, yet judiciously, hiring CBP officers and Border Patrol agents from a pool of applicants that already maintain the public’s trust and put their lives on the line for our security and safety on a daily basis. It carves our three narrowly tailored exemptions for state and local law enforcement officers who have already passed a polygraph examination, Federal law enforcement officers who have already passed a stringent background investigation, and veterans with at least three consecutive years in the military who have held a clearance and passed a background investigation. McSally has made establishing a better, more effective border strategy a top priority. This measure builds on Rep. McSally’s previous work to provide necessary resources to secure the border, including legislation to conduct a full assessment of border threats, and  her first bill signed into law, the Border Jobs for Veterans Act, to fill the vacancies at our ports of entry with qualified, trained service members. Full bill text HERE.

Legislation Introduced By Senator John McCain aimed at combating veteran suicide: The Veterans Overmedication Prevention Act would direct the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to conduct an independent expert study on the deaths of all veterans being treated at the VA who died by suicide or from a drug overdose in the last five years. This review would ensure that the VA has accurate information about the relationship between veteran suicides and prescription medication. Additionally, this legislation would direct the VA to perform a more comprehensive review of its behavioral health workforce with a focus on mental health counselors in an effort to address workforce shortages. These professionals will increase access to services and help reduce the incidence of suicide. An average of 20 veterans a day die from suicide, accounting for nearly a quarter of all deaths from suicide among U.S. adults. Since 2001, the rate of veteran suicide has increased by 32 percent. After controlling for age and gender, this makes the risk of suicide 21 percent higher for veterans than the average U.S. adult. Since 2001, there has been a 259 percent increase in narcotics prescriptions. In the largest veteran populations, veterans die from accidental narcotic overdose at a 33 percent higher rate than the rest of the population. Veterans can “double dip” on prescription drugs by filling at the VA and in the community. Although the VA has established State Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs, there is no real enforcement. “The tragedy of 20 veterans a day dying from suicide is a national scandal,” said McCain.

Senator John McCain: “JFK delivered many memorable speeches during his life… But the address that meant the most to me was one I listened to as a young naval officer in 1962, just a few days after my ship, the USS Enterprise, returned to Oceana Naval Air Station from deployment. In a calm, firm voice, the President described the threat and outlined his response: ‘First: . . . a strict quarantine on all offensive military equipment under shipment to Cuba is being initiated. All ships of any kind bound for Cuba from whatever port will, if found to contain cargoes of offensive weapons, will be turned back.’… Who knows if I was as ready to pay that price as I believed I was. But more than a half century later, I can still feel the thrill of believing I might have to, and the pride of thinking that I was among a select number whom the glamorous, inspiring American leader was counting on to execute his decision. He was gone a year later. But I have felt a connection to him and to that address ever since. He was the man who issued my personal summons to history, and who seemed in that moment to be the very best man for the job.” –Opening of New Smithsonian American Art Museum Exhibit Celebrating President John F. Kennedy’s Centennial .
