5-9-17 Briefs

Chairman Jonathan Lines' First 100 Days: Today marks the 100th day I've served as chairman of the Arizona Republican Party, and the progress we've made is very exciting. When running for this position I promised to work hard to make this Party more open and accessible to everyone -- especially those who want to actively learn how they can help grow the conservative base. That's exactly what we're doing. All precinct committeemen have access to their precinct data, legislative district chairs have access to voter files and we're holding campaigning 101 training sessions where activists can learn the tricks of the trade from the best in the business. I know that the Republican Party doesn't succeed without you, and engaged members like you, that care about the people we elect and the policies they enact. That's why we will continue to work to hard to involve you in every aspect of the work we are doing to elect and re-elect Republicans. 2018 is just around the corner, and we're building a winning infrastructure to make sure Republicans not only keep their seats, but pick up new ones. It continues to be an honor and a privilege to work on behalf of this Party, serving you and the great state of Arizona.

Pima County Republican Chairman David Eppihimer was interviewed on KGUN9 News in Tucson on why the PCRC is against higher taxes. He asks the voters send a message to the Tucson Mayor and City Council by voting “no” on the Special May 16 election ballot. He also recommends that party workers make sure voters are receiving their mail-in-ballots for this special election. More info...

Jose Borrajero’s AZRRT UPDATE: Failed Bills Routinely Enacted Via The Budget Process - One blatant example of this reprehensible practice is exposed in today’s ADI article regarding the new state budget: “Legislators appropriated $235,000 for the College Readiness Pilot Program. The program involves students taking one more test to let them know what they and their teachers should already know by the 11th grade; they are college ready or not. This disaster was pushed by Rep. Heather Carter, and will probably only really benefit the test makers.” The bill here was HB2210, introduced by Carter (LD15). It passed handily in the House when only two Republicans had the common sense to oppose it, Kern (LD20) and Payne (LD21). But then it failed in the Senate and that would have been the end of it, except it has been revived and passed stealthily via the budget process. While Carter was the perpetrator in this case, the practice appears to be quite common among AZ legislators. Activist Stephen Sivigliano: Now that The Donald has signed the executive order allowing priests, ministers, rabbis, etc. to speak out on "political issues" without fear of losing their tax exempt status, let's see how many of them will speak out on abortion and demand it's total ban.  I won't hold my breath waiting for that to happen.  Besides, many of them may very well speak out in favor of it, extolling it's virtues.  It may open a can of worms (Pandora's box)? We shall see.  He made a step in the right direction, though.  Later.  Un-so-called and un-deplorable (in a basket).

For The Third Consecutive Year the  Governor's Youth Commission (GYC) partnered with youth and organizations across Arizona to rank number one for Global Youth Service Day (GYSD). GYSD is the largest service event in the world, which works to mobilize millions of youth to improve their communities through service. Out of 135 participating countries, Arizona logged the most youth-led projects. By participating in and celebrating GYSD, the GYC is part of a global effort to engage youth addressing some of the world's most critical issues. "I could not be more proud of the 51 Youth Commissioners that not only lead here in Arizona but inspire global youth service," stated Governor Doug Ducey. "I encourage youth across Arizona to consider their role in serving our many diverse communities and ways they can partner with the GYC." Since 2015, the GYC has logged more than 160,000 local youth-led service hours and continues to engage Arizona communities on a daily basis. Today in a collaborative partnership with the Governor's Office of Youth, Faith and Family, the GYC hosted more than 1,500 youth from across the state for Youth Leadership Day at Grand Canyon University. The GYC designed Youth Leadership Day to inspire future Arizona leaders to ensure a stronger, safer and more prosperous state. Eligible students must be a high school sophomore, junior or senior during the 2017/18 school year and have displayed exceptional leadership inside and outside the classroom. Applications are being accepted through May 26, 2017 on our website at BeSeenBeHeard.az.gov

Phil Francis, retired chairman & CEO of PetSmart and John O. Whiteman , retired CEO of Empire Southwest & President of the Whiteman Foundation: As  former CEOs of two of Arizona’s largest private and publicly traded companies, we know the importance of a high-quality, well-funded education system. Educators agree that a robust early education experience must begin with literacy-enriched full-day kindergarten. For three years, we have partnered with business, education, philanthropic, and public safety leaders including ASU President Dr. Michael Crow, State Board of Education President Reg Ballantyne, Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery, Greater Phoenix Leadership, the Arizona Community Foundation, and key members of the Arizona State Legislature to highlight the tremendous return on investment that quality full-day kindergarten delivers. Governor Ducey and the legislature listened and are working to answer our call! This past January during his 2017 State of the State, Governor Ducey became a vocal advocate for full day kindergarten when he said, “voluntary full day kindergarten works, parents like it, so I say let’s expand it.” In the budget passed last week, Governor Ducey kept his promise by championing the expansion of literacy-focused, voluntary full-day kindergarten in Arizona. It’s truly great to have a Republican Governor, whose advocacy changed minds in our conservative legislature and who delivered $20 million in new funding -- over two years, as a first step to expanding access to high-quality, literacy-enriched full day kindergarten. We thank Governor Ducey and the Arizona State legislature and look forward to supporting Governor Ducey  and members of the legislature in their efforts to make kindergarten a full day grade for every family in Arizona!
