6-27-17 Briefs

Republican Briefs

Lolly Hathhorn, former 1st Vice Chair Gila County, State Committeeman: “There seems to be an overabundance of comments on what is going on (or NOT) with the AZGOP.  I think that there has been enough rhetoric and it is now time to take ACTION.  Stop the whining and get on with either recalling Mr. Lines or just be quiet.  I see so much of the illegalities but nobody seems to want to start the ball rolling.  DO SOMETHING!  It is time!  I don’t understand all of the ins and outs but sure does smell funny about what is going on.  Where are all of the other County Chairmen?  How do the State Committeemen feel?  ASK!!!!!  Take a survey – make calls – send out e-mails.  I’m glad to have put my 2-cents in.

Former LD13 Chairman Dr. Bob Branch, Ph.D., a conservative teacher, school administer, businessman, and the current Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Commissioner (District Four), has announced his candidacy for the office of Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction. Branch points out that Arizona’s public school system ranks 47th out of 50 states for quality of education K-12 and he wants to make it better. “We have accepted the lie that once our children graduate from high school, they are either career or college ready. The system was a failure before ‘Common Core, AIMS testing, and No Child Left Behind.’ We spend over $6,000,000,000 per year on this failed system. Our current system oppresses our children. They are taught that the high school diploma has meaning, only to find out that after graduating they have to spend tens of thousands of dollars to earn a marketable skill or vocation. Parents and children are then saddled with a mountain of student loan debt ($33,000 on average). We need to bring back quality education, skills, and vocations to provide opportunities for our children’s future,” Branch said. We can:

     · put a stop to this failed system by delivering the education, skills, and vocations needed to provide opportunities for a bright and productive future.

     · create an education system that works for all Arizonans.

My vision is to:

      · create a model of critical thinking, skills and Arizona values, that gives students options to learn a marketable trade, skills, and a vocation.

     ·  take education from the hands of the social engineers in Washington D.C.; bring it home to Arizona, allowing us to decide what is best for our children.

     ·  reform Arizona’s education system from the ground up.

    · utilize technology, ingenuity, and organization to deliver hands-on education to our children.

    · have a system that allows students many options for their future.

    · provide teachers with the help, tools, resources, personal training, and the pay needed to be successful in their position in our new education system.

Let’s continue the movement that President Trump started and bring education back to Arizona.

Congressman Andy Biggs is looking for interns for both his Washington, D.C. and Arizona offices. Click here if you are interested in applying for an internship with my office.

CONGRESSIONAL STATEMENTS/ACTION

(300 word limit. If statements exceed the limit, it will be edited)

Congressman Andy Biggs: Yesterday, the U.S. Supreme Court announced that it will hear arguments for President Trump’s executive order that temporary limits travel from six nations.  The Court also lifted lower court injunctions for much of the executive order. Congressman Biggs said: “I am pleased with the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to remove the unconstitutional stay on most of President Trump’s executive order until they hear arguments and make a final decision in October. My mission in Congress is to restore the horizontal and vertical separation of powers, and this order is a victory for that cause. Regardless of what you might think of the policy itself, the President has the authority to make these decisions, and I have been extremely vocal in supporting the administration’s position. I wholeheartedly agree with the justices as they wrote in their order, “but when it comes to refugees who lack any such connection to the United States, for the reasons we have set out, the balance tips in favor of the Government’s compelling need to provide for the Nation’s security.” This order was a victory for the U.S. Constitution and for President Trump’s commitment to his promise to keep our nation secure. The United States of America will always be a nation of and compassionate to immigrants, but we must ensure the safety of American citizens above all else.”

Congresswoman Martha McSally: There should be many paths to success in America. Not all great jobs require a four year degree. In Southern Arizona there are stable, good-paying trade craft and manufacturing jobs that remain vacant because there aren’t enough people with the skills to fill them. That's why I introduced the Veterans’ Entry to Apprenticeship Act last week so returning service members can apply their GI benefits to pre-apprenticeship programs that teach the techniques necessary to break into skilled trade industries.  CLICK HERE to learn more. The House also overwhelmingly passed the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act with my support. This bill will help American students and workers have access to education that will launch their careers. It empowers states and local communities--especially rural communities-- to adapt career and technical education to best meet their changing economic needs and align programs with in-demand jobs. Bills like these will help bridge the gap between Americans looking for work and employers looking to fill positions.

Congressman Andy Biggs: Aside from working towards priorities like a full repeal of Obamacare, passage of pro-growth tax reform, and building a border wall, Congress has a long list of important items that must be completed prior to September 30.  This includes reviewing the federal debt limit, passing a federal budget, providing funding for the next fiscal year, reauthorizing the Federal Aviation Administration and more. Failure to complete these items could have detrimental consequences and will likely lead to Congress once again irresponsibly kicking the can down the road. I am not under the illusion that any of these things will be easy to accomplish, but I fully intend to work in good faith in Congress to remain true to my constituents in Arizona’s Fifth Congressional District. I know they will not, and rightfully should not, settle for half-hearted measures, nor a job left undone. With a unified Republican government, Congress can no longer put off following through on the priorities we promised to the American people. To help maintain our pace and deliberations, I strongly support the call for the House to suspend the August recess so that Members of Congress can remain focused on enacting the policies we have discussed for the last several years. We cannot afford to lose any of our momentum as we do the peoples’ business in Washington, D.C. I want to hear from you – do you want the House to cancel its August recess?

Congressman Andy Biggs: I am so happy to hear of Majority Whip Steve Scalise’s improvement from the horrific shooting that occurred last week in Alexandria. This afternoon, it was reported that he was moved out of the intensive care unit and continues to recover from his injuries. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with him, his family, and the other individuals who were shot that morning. Also, I am deeply appreciative to the Capitol Police officers who saved lives that day, and for the officers who protect Members of Congress, their staff, and the public on a daily basis. Their sacrifices are heroic.

Congressman Andy Biggs: I am extremely disappointed by the lack of resolve from Congress to repeal Obamacare – most recently, with the U.S. Senate’s legislation (released yesterday). The American people demanded a full repeal. Now, the 115th Congress is dangerously close to abandoning our promise and opportunity to completely repeal Obamacare, remove government from the health care industry, permanently defund Planned Parenthood, and give Americans their long-awaited relief from overwhelming premiums. Since taking office in January, I have participated in many meetings with House and Senate members to offer insights and solutions to this goal. I hope that my colleagues will see our grave error with the AHCA and reverse course to wholly repeal Obamacare. Only by doing so will we be able to fulfill our promises to the American people.

Congresswoman Martha McSally: Arizona’s breathtaking scenes are renown throughout the world— but our state has one of the largest backlogs in park maintenance projects. Saguaro National Park has approximately $12.9 million and Chiricahua National Monument has roughly $10.3 million in needed restoration projects. Senator John McCain and I introduced the 21st Century Conservation Service Corps Act to expand public-private partnership programs encouraging agencies to use service corps volunteers to complete park projects. This is cost-effective for agencies and it provides veterans, underprivileged youth, inner-city kids, and those looking for work with service hours.
