7-18-17 Briefs

Republican Briefs

McConnell Concedes Health Care Bill Is Dead; Announces Senate Will Vote On Full Repeal Of Obamacare Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell acknowledged Monday night that he lacked the votes to pass the Senate health care bill after two more GOP senators came out against it, leaving the party short of a majority.

McConnell Abandons Obamacare Repeal and Replace Effort Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is pulling the plug on a GOP bill to repeal and replace large portions of the 2010 health care law in one fell swoop…

Trump-To-Republicans, Let’s-Repeal-Obamacare Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell vowed late Monday that he will push the Senate for a clean repeal of ObamaCare, after conceding defeat to repeal and replace the health law.

White House Squeezes Jeff Flake The Arizona senator's potential GOP primary foes have been in talks with the president and top administration officials.

Activist Gary Ripley: Just wondering what you would think if Sen John McCain had to retire for health issues?... Would Governor Doug Ducey appoint McCains daughter Meghan or maybe do the right thing and appoint US Sen candidate Dr. Kelli Ward to free up State Treasurer Jeff DeWit to challenge Flake in the primary? Unfortunately my bet would be on Meghan.

Steven Slaton, Navajo County Republican Chairman: Make sure you get any information to the attorney general today or tomorrow, in regards to the failure of the AZGOP audit and turning over records to our secretary. Ther’re going to review the matter this coming Wednesday. Send information to Stephen B. Shadegg - Director of Outreach, 1275 W Washington, Phoenix 85007 Phone 602-542-7575 Stephen.Shadegg@azag.gov

And Speaking Of Stephen Shadegg, Briefs remembers when his dad John was an assistant to then AG Bob Corbin (before Shadegg was elected to Congress) and the cute little toddler would come to visit the office. Little did we know that he would return to work there as an adult. Stephen was named for his grandfather – Stephen Shadegg - who was Sen Barry Goldwater’s right hand man.

Ooops. Yesterday’s Briefs errantly referred to Timothy Schwartz as the LD30 Chairman. He is the First Vice Chairman, not the current chair. However, he is a former LD30 Chairman.

Activist Robert ‘Bob’ Richard of Glendale pleads with McCain, Flake and Franks: Gentlemen:  If you don't let up dumping on President Trump and his administrative efforts to redirect our Nation back to a healthy economy, jobs, & you will destroy the peoples well-being  and our Nation.  Put your self-center motives aside.  Honor the Presidency!  We the people elected him. Your harmful outcomes are being watch daily. Your disguise has been exposed.  Change your corrupt ways before it is too late.

AZGOP Chairman Jonathan Lines is hosting a telephone town hall meeting at 6 pm., Tues., July 18 giving him an opportunity to visit with all of our State Committee members, PCs, and Republican activists. The AZGOP will be calling every PC, State Committeeman and GOP activist for whom they have a land-line phone number; if you received a call last time, you’ll get one this time. Lines will give an update on party business, my trip to Washington, DC and his discussion with the President, Vice President and senior administration officials.

Tom Morrissey Past Chairman AZ GOP: The AZ GOP State Treasurer Bob Lettieri has announced that Chairman Jonathan Lines has raised more money than any previous chairman up to this point in his/her term.  I congratulate him on that but let me say that where the money comes from is always more important than the amount. It is a stubborn fact that most of the laws of our land are not written by legislator's (with the exception of certain of our congressmen) but rather, by their donors, through their lobbyists. If you follow the money, you will see who gave the most through the laws that are written. In the words of founding father Thomas Jefferson, "Vigilance is the price of Liberty". Stay awake, my brothers and sisters...stay awake.

Steven Slaton, Navajo County Republican Committee Chairman to Bylaws Committee Chairman Kathie Petsas: "PCs Seeking Bylaws Committee Amendment Forms should contact their LD chairmen." I never receive any from you. Now since you never sent me the completed amendment forms to make comments on changes, I think you need to push out the next bylaw committee meeting tell all chairman receive your forms to pass out to our PC'S.

Activist Gail Montanye Golden: AZ is NOT Listing All LD's and/or Counties; the Republican Meetings nor their Key Leaders are no longer on the AZGOP website NOR are the Bylaws. Anyone needing a copy of the Bylaws, contact gailgolden@yahoo.com.

LD30 First Vice Chairman Timothy Schwartz: You know he could have scheduled this 3 days later and done a great service to our country, but he didn't! Kick him to the curb, Mr. President. We cannot afford McCain, Flake and Lindsay Graham to impede MAGA any longer!

AZRRT Call To Action – Assault On ESA’s: Jose Borrajero NOTE: The claims made herein may be verified by reading the text of bill SB1431 at http://www.azleg.gov/legtext/53leg/1R/laws/0139.htm It has come to our attention that two organizations, Save Our Schools (SOS) and AZ School Board Association (ASBA) are attempting to undermine parental school choice by repealing the recently enacted Empowerment Scholarship Accounts bill (SB1431) via placement on the November ballot. We at the AZRRT are encouraging everyone to refuse to sign the petition and to encourage friends, relatives, and other acquaintances to also refuse. Don’t Just Preach To The Choir, Preach To The Potential Sinners Too. Here are some points to keep in mind:

     1. The ESA program is merely a limited pilot program. The huge losses claimed by the government/education complex are actually quite minimal because of the severe caps contained in SB1431. Between now and 2022 the number of ESA’s allowed will be limited to only ONE HALF OF ONE PERCENT of students enrolled in public schools the previous year. After that the number allowed will be frozen at the 2022 level. This is MUCH LESS THAN A DROP IN A BUCKET.

    2. Let’s allow SB1431 to take its course and evaluate its results before we rush to repeal it.

    3. The means testing within SB1431 is weak. But the solution is to amend, not to throw away the whole program.

    4. The SOS/ASBA expressed concern that ESA’s will reduce teacher pay and/or cause teacher layoffs cannot be taken seriously since these are the folks that have been reducing classroom fund allocation for the last several years. A Rabid Bobcat That Attacked A Large Dog and bit a man on the hand in the Anthem Country Club area on Sunday evening has tested positive for rabies. At 7:30 p.m. Sunday, the Arizona Game and Fish Department received a call that a man was bitten on the hand by a bobcat. The man reported to officers that the bobcat attacked a German shepherd and he was bitten while trying to separate the two animals. The bobcat quickly fled the immediate area, but was located and dispatched. The animal underwent a necropsy by the department’s wildlife health veterinarian and tissue samples were sent to the Arizona Department of Health Services. Results showed it tested positive for rabies. While bobcats are abundant throughout Arizona – including in urban areas – they can be aggressive if they become sick, trapped or are defending offspring or a territory. They also tend to frequent habitats where food and water are plentiful, such as in neighborhoods. Because bobcats are rarely a threat to people and commonly coexist without incident, AZGFD does not routinely relocate bobcats.

The Arizona Department of Education’s (ADE’s) IT division announced that it has reached yet another milestone. The award-winning Arizona Education Data Standards system (AzEDS), which has become the industry model for collecting, storing and managing education data, has executed the most efficient annual rollover in the state’s history.

Border Patrol Union: President Trump's Immigration Policy 'Miraculous' National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd thanked President Trump for his crackdown on illegal immigration into the United States this week, calling the unprecedented plummet of border crossings "nothing short of miraculous." Speaking with C-SPAN on Monday, Judd confirmed the President's new policies were having a dramatic impact on border patrol agents and other law enforcement officials, saying "we have never seen such a drop" in illegal immigration.

CONGRESSIONAL STATEMENTS/ACTION

(300 word limit. If statements exceed the limit, it will be edited)

Sen John McCain on the best path forward on health care: “One of the major problems with Obamacare was that it was written on a strict party-line basis and driven through Congress without a single Republican vote. As this law continues to crumble in Arizona and states across the country, we must not repeat the original mistakes that led to Obamacare’s failure. The Congress must now return to regular order, hold hearings, receive input from members of both parties, and heed the recommendations of our nation's governors so that we can produce a bill that finally provides Americans with access to quality and affordable health care.”

CANDIDATE STATEMENTS

GOP 1st Congressional District candidate Steve Smith today announced that his campaign for Congress filed its first FEC report and had raised more than $100,000. “I am really excited by the level of support we have seen and the commitment everyone has towards winning the CD1 seat.” said Smith. “When you realize that we didn’t get started until the first week of June, getting over the $100,000 plateau is even more encouraging.” Smith’s campaign reported raising $102,646.50 and banked nearly all of it, as the campaign reported a Cash On Hand total of $96,636.01. “Everyone on this campaign recognizes that while this is a great start, we have a long way to go,” said Smith, adding “That’s why we will continue to work hard building not only a world-class finance team, but a world-class campaign organization.  Arizona needs and deserves someone better than liberal, out-of-touch Tom O’Halleran, and we intend to be that proven alternative.”
