7-7-17 Briefs

Republican Briefs

Tom Morrissey, Past Chairman AZ GOP: Gabby Mercer hit the nail right on the head in her open letter to Mathew Kenney 7-6-17-briefs  when she referred to his remark to her that "(Chairman) Lines had nothing to do with his hiring as Executive Director of the AZ GOP, the Donors did".  If that is true, in my humble opinion, we, the grassroots have absolutely lost control of our state party. There is little, to no doubt, as to who holds the reigns these days and it ain't us. Us being the Grassroots Conservatives.  Mr Kenney should realize that he was speaking with an elected statutory officer.  One of the three who have statutory (under state statute) responsibility to maintain the integrity and function of the Arizona Republican Party. I can say, based on my own experience when I was chairman, that I was approached by the Establishment when I was told that "they liked me but did not like my staff. I was advised that if I would clean house and fire them, and then allow the Establishment to put their people as replacements, my job as chairman would be a lot easier. If I didn't do that I would be on my own."  I refused that offer and never regretted my decision to do so. We went on, without support from the Establishment Elites in our party, to an extraordinarily successful election cycle because the Grassroots were united and excited about having control of the AZ GOP. As I said many times during my term, there would be no quid pro quo while conducting the business and the mission of our party.  This is the responsibility, duty and authority of the Chairman.  No one else. Especially not the "Donors".

AZGOP Executive Director Matthew Kenney: While I normally do not stoop to the level of those who would spend countless hours attempting to tear down others, given Secretary Mercer’s status as a duly elected member of the Executive Committee, duty requires that I respond to her letter of July 6, 2017. 7-6-17-briefs or Mercer's Open Letter To AZGOP

10 years ago, as a recent graduate of Arizona State University, I swore an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States of America, and became an officer in the United States Army. In the years that followed, I had the honor of commanding some of the finest young men that any of us will have the privilege of knowing. Tragically, some of them gave the ultimate sacrifice, and still others returned home from the battlefield with wounds both visible and invisible.

I saw things that I can only pray that Gabby never has to witness. And experienced loss that I pray she never has to feel. Every single day of my life has been dedicated to serving the country that those young men so bravely fought for. It is why I joined the Republican Party. Why I worked so hard for Concerned Veterans for America. And why I was so honored when Chairman Lines offered me the opportunity to continue to serve my country, this time as the Executive Director of the Arizona Republican Party.

Nearly a decade before joining the Army, I swore another oath…I was saved and became a Christian. And as such, I spend every day attempting to live my life in a way that is pleasing to my God, and my savior, Jesus Christ. Because of this, I will not respond, point by point, to the vitriol and lies contained in Gabby’s letter. Jesus teaches us to turn the other cheek. I strive to live by His example.

For those who are concerned about the truth, I’d be happy to discuss the relevant facts, personally and privately. As for Secretary Mercer, I will say only two things. First off, as a Christian, I will pray for you. I will pray that you find peace from the anger, rage that seems to fuel your hate-filled missives. I will continue to pray for your health and safety on the road, and that the Lord wrap you in his loving arms and deliver you from the demons that you are undoubtedly fighting. This is my prayer for you,

And second, I fervently hope that you will stop this fruitless and harmful campaign of division. With your election to AZ GOP Secretary, you were placed in a position of great consequence by your fellow state committee members. They did not elect you to divide our party or to pit Republican against Republican. I would urge you to take note of the relationship that has been forged by Chairman Lines and Treasurer Latieri; despite running on opposing slates, these two patriots have joined forces and have put the party on strong fiscal and political ground. And my door will always be open to you.

I am proud of Chairman Lines and the entire team at the Arizona GOP for ignoring the attempts at division and continuing to grow the party. We have established a strong relationship with the Republican National Committee as we work together to support our President and Republican leaders, and we are building towards a successful 2018 and beyond.

Russell Sais, La Paz County GOP Chairman: I have cherry picked our bylaws.  Following are those that I feel may apply to our problem.  It appears that we could attempt to call a special meeting, to determine a few things. Like

     1. What happened to the $220,000 that Lines was surprised about in the March meeting.  (I ask 11 questions about this money  about a week ago).

     2. When has the exec committee (and why have they not) been presented with a budget to approve.

     3. A demand in regard to how come Gabby and Bob have not been granted proper access

It is my view that we need a legal beagle to write up the demand for a special meeting, and proceed to follow the bylaws in regard to getting a call issued.  Doing so would do a couple of things.  One would be to force them to give Gabby the proper contact information so she can make the call.  AND, if they still refuse, then it becomes a legal offense I think. Anyway, look at the excerpts below, and let’s see if we can actually pull off getting a special meeting underway.

     1. How did this happen, when he (Lines) was the treasurer, AND in charge of expenditures?

     2. Who authorized these expenditures?

     3. What was this $220,000 spent on, (an itemized list)?

     4. Did the executive committee approve this $220,000?

     5. Now that Chairman Lines is our party chairman, surely he has found out the particulars about this $220,000, right?

     6. If, in fact, (then treasurer) Lines was later surprised by the $220,000 debt, what actions has he now taken to hold accountable those whom apparently absconded with party money when HE WAS in charge of those funds – and apparently not watching?

     7. Was (then treasurer) Lines, actually on the job and doing the job as treasurer?

     8. How did someone else get access to state party funds without his knowledge?

     9. Have laws been broken?

     10. If so, what charges have been filed?

     11. Is (then treasurer) Chairman Lines, in violation of the law by allowing these expenditures without (as he now claims) his knowledge?

I wrote a letter 8 days ago to Lines, giving him 7 days to respond to me .

Activist John Backer: Now that we have  completed celebrating the birth of our great nation on Independence Day for this year, our attention should turn to resolving the issues with the AZGOP Chairman Lines and Executive Director Kenney. If you feel as an ever-increasing number of Republican activists do, that something must be done to correct the issues within our Party, we need your help. Email me at to share your thoughts and your ability and willingness to help and the feedback from those you have communicated with directly.  It is critical to quickly determine if a recall is fully viable based on the number of activists who are willing to openly support the recall effort. Individually, when we speak up about our concerns, we are not being heard or perhaps ignored, but when we speak together with one voice, our roar cannot be ignored. There is no better way to celebrate our Independence Day than to honor those who came before us by stepping out of the shadows like our fore-fathers did before the King of England, and exercise our freedom of speech! How large are you willing to sign your John Hancock? Chairman Lines, today we celebrate our Independence Day! This is an edited version to maintain the 300 word limit – to read entire text visit    Editor’s Note: Backer denies reports circulating that his recall efforts are a “fishing expedition.”   Also see Arizona Republicans Are Asking Who Is John Backer

LD21 Debbie Lesko’s Legislative Update: I had the privilege of spending July 4th with a great group of Americans honoring our country’s Independence. Hundreds of patriots dressed in red, white, and blue sang “God Bless America”, watched a video reminding us of the sacrifices made by the signers of the Declaration of Independence and rang a replica of the Liberty Bell to celebrate our freedoms. What an honor it was to sit among veterans, Rosie the Riveters, and good, patriotic people who believe in the freedoms of our country. Fran Ellis, one of my Sun City constituents and a Riveter asked me to sit with the Riveter group. Not many are left to tell their story, so it was really a treat! These ladies, now around 90 years old, were called to action to work in factories and shipyards during World War II. Many produced munitions, built planes, and made war supplies while men were off at war. These women and all the veterans in the room sacrificed a lot for us and I don’t want anyone to forget.Today men and women throughout our nation continue to make sacrifices to protect our freedoms. They fight in battle, they teach our children, they defend our freedoms through word and prayer.  They make a difference. Each one of us can make a difference. What we do may be small or large, but it happens every day.If you have an idea or believe there is a problem that can be corrected by changing state law, now is the time to contact me at or 602-926-5413. Your idea may be my next piece of legislation.  You won’t know unless you ask.
