Editor’s Note: AZGOP Secretary Gabby Mercer’s letter 7-6-17 Briefs, is pretty reflective of commentary circulated throughout the grassroots party members for the past five months regarding the newly elected secretary’s quest to obtain party’s secretarial records. AZGOP Executive Director Matt Kenney’s self-described faith and military service are commendable 7-7-17 Briefs – but not likely part of the Executive Director’s job description requirements. He doesn’t address specific allegations, nor did he answer two questions Briefs sent to him Thursday morning regarding conflicting reports circulating late July 6. Briefs ask him whether he had said:
1. (During the June 17 ExComm meeting) that Gabby Mercer hadn’t asked for the secretary records.
2. That big-moneyed donors, not Jonathan Lines, made the decision to hire him as the Exec Dir?
After Briefs reminded him of the two unanswered questions and Kenney responded:
1. “Secretary Mercer has never asked me for records. In fact, she's been to the office once since being elected and I have performed all of her duties for her in her absence.”
2. “Of course not. I was hired by the Chairman.”
Which leaves PCs still wondering:
A. Why should Mercer have to “ask for” for a contact list and secretarial records that should have automatically been given to her upon her election.
B. If Kenney is performing the secretary’s duties, why in the hell hasn’t the AZGOP given Mercer the AZGOP Executive Committee contact list and records so she can do the job she was elected to do? Surely, the Executive Director has other duties to attend to.
C. What really went on behind the scenes regarding hiring Kenney as the Executive Director? It was well circulated prior to the election that Kenney was the Establishments anointed one to become the Executive Director, although Lines assured voters he would appoint the Executive Director of his choice. Isn’t it amazing that Lines appointee was the Establishments alleged choice?
No wonder PCs, state committeemen, past and present county chairman, former AZGOP officials, and other party leaders/activists are disillusioned. See letters below that came in yesterday. – ft
Former Yavapai County Chairman Jim Dutton: I do not know either Gabby Mercer or Matt Kenney personally, however, I must say Kenney's "response" to Gabby's open letter was pathetic. First, he paints himself as having some kind of moral high ground for refusing to answer those he feels are beneath him. Then continues to make his so-called response all about himself, as though his resume puts him in a unique place of having character and credibility that is above reproach. However what really irked me is how he made himself out to be the victim and Gabby to be a villain whose only motive is to attack fine Republicans. All of this while avoiding every single issue that Gabby brought forth. Mr. Kenney, I am not sure which Jesus you serve but the biblical Savior was an advocate for speaking the truth, something that seems to be lacking lately in the AZGOP.
Why did it take 5 months to hand over any of the financial books to the duly elected treasurer?
What was being done with and to those books during the 5 months? The bylaws state that the Secretary "shall be responsible to preserve all permanent records of the state committee and relinquish them to his/her successor." Why then, after 6 months doesn't Gabby have them?
Why were the Minutes of the Executive Committee meeting held in Yuma altered to remove certain statements?
What is the purpose of an Executive Director? Questions like these and those of Gabby Mercer are means of accountability, not personal attacks and they deserve answers.
Steven Slaton - Chairman Navajo County Republican Committee (Part 1): During the June 17 Executive Committee meeting in Flagstaff, Matt Kenney stated -in front of everybody - that Gabby Mercer “never ask for any records pertaining to her duties and responsibilities concerning her position” during their June 9 meeting. Kenney stated this while I was asking for a motion that Chairman Lines needs to release all of these records to Mercer. This documentation by Mercer shows Kenney “lied to the entire Executive Committee about what really happen”. This is unacceptable behavior, along with Lines who lied to so many of us about not hiring Kenney – then and went ahead and did so. It is very clear that the leadership of our AZGOP is not in charge. According to Kenney, the “council” of donors are the decision makers in the AZGOP as stated to Mercer. A “donor council” does not run, control or make decisions for the AZGOP. It is the Executive Committee. Jim Ehl’s July 5 Arizona Town Crier stated, “And here is the crux in the matter, dereliction of duty by the County Chairs. We have 15 county chairs, 15 county 1st vice chairs, 15 2nd vice chairs, that’s 45 ELECTED LEADERS and when has anyone heard anything ’ from any one of them??? Also, we have a political action committee, AZRA that claims to have 11 chapters that of one time claimed to ‘ride herd’ on the actions of the AZ GOP, and what has happened?? From the AZ GOP bylaws; “A. Executive Committee The executive committee of the state committee's shall consist of the elected officers of the state committee, the national committeeman and committeewoman, the chairman and first and second vice chairman from each county, three members at large from each congressional district… The executive committee shall approve the annual budget and review and counsel the state chairman on all programs relating to the state party” And, who keeps up with the ExComm inaction?
Steven Slaton - Chairman Navajo County Republican Committee (Part 2): Here was my June 3, 2017 open letter to Chairman Lines that he didn’t respond to: I’m CALLING on you to perform a required Audit of the AZ GOP. See 2017_06_11_archive Since it is quite obvious that our leadership has no interest in the bylaws, or state statues, or THE RULE OF LAW, it is time to go to our State Attorney General to force Chairman Lines to follow the Law. I’m going to speak with our State Attorney General and request he follow-up on the breach of the AZGOP Chairman’s failure to follow the by-laws and state statutes. OUR Attorney General is up for re-election, and I don’t think Mark Brnovich would like to answer all these questions on why he is not enforcing the AZGOP to follow the LAW. Unfortunately, if our State Attorney General does not enforce the state statues the liberal reporters of the Arizona Republic or the Capital Times will have a field day with him...
Let’s step up chairs, 1st vices, and 2nd vices, and clean the swamp of these AZGOP leaders who are being lead by a few donors, who lie to us, and do not want to follow the law. Since this debate has become very public, we now have many county committees & LD chairman along with PC’s and state committeemen who are on board. This is a battle worth fighting. The recent emails from John Backer to recall Jonathan Lines (www.recallLines.com), may or may not be legitimate, but was published by the committee to recall AZGOP Chairman Lines. So stay tuned. Please read the MCRC Briefs and Arizona Freedom Alliance daily to see our progress in this worthwhile venture to clean up the swamp at the AZGOP!!! Russell Sias, LaPaz County Chairman & Bylaws Committee member - Open letter to Chairman Lines: On June 28, I sent you a letter with several questions. I also gave you a week to respond. You have not, and today is day 10.You could have simply said that I misunderstood Bylaw Committee Chairman Kathie Petsas when she told me that my suggestion of a bylaws change should be in the standing rules instead of in bylaws, (I didn’t misunderstand). But, you have not. You could have claimed that I misunderstood when she attempted to deceive me, (I didn’t do that either). But, you didn’t say that. You have had ample opportunity to tell Petsas that it is absolutely inappropriate to keep contact information from being passed around within the bylaws committee, but you have not corrected that either. You could have claimed, in answer to my 11 questions about the $250,000 that “surprised” you, that it was not improperly spent, but you haven’t done this either. Sir, you have no justification to be “surprised” by this apparently missing money, for you were the treasurer, with the mandated responsibility, by our own bylaws no less, to watch over the party’s money. The question remains, how on earth could you be “surprised” by this indebtedness? You were the treasurer! No answer to this question, either! Today is day 10 – and counting. We, the grass roots of the party are not going away. We have every right to know why you insist in keeping us in the dark. It’s time to come clean and explain what is going on within our party and with our money.
Former AZGOP Director of Operations PC Phil Mason To Matthew Kenney; I was so disappointed in your response to the concerns of Secretary Gabby Mercer regarding the powers - including you - not turning over the records of the AZGOP to her as required by the By-Laws. What was my disappointment you may ask. Well, you failed to recite your characterization of your journey down the birth canal. Mercer's right to immediate and complete receipt of all of the records of the Party has nothing to do with your graduation from ASU, becoming a shave-tail officer in the military, and your salvation. In fact, her right to those documents have nothing to do with you as a hired hand of the Party. Get over yourself. As the hired hand of the moneyed elites - as you have stated - your main duty is to make sure the By-Laws are followed. That seems to be more than you have the capability to accomplish. Not exactly being a good and faithful servant - of Him or the PCs.
Russell Sias, La Paz County Chairman, & Bylaws Committee member to Bylaws Committee Chairman Kathie Petsas: I see that you have emailed notice of an upcoming meeting for the next Bylaws Committee meeting. I didn't get my email. In case you have accidentally misplaced my email address, it is email@example.com. Please resend the email to me, and include the specific time AND place of the meeting. Thank you.
Former Maricopa County Chairman Lyle Tuttle to AZGOP Executive Director Matthew Kenney: The letter you posted in yesterday's Briefs 7-7-17-Briefs sounds like John McCain Jr. As a Veteran, I am ASHAMED that Kenney would (like McCain) use his military background in this manner. I agree 100% with Tom Morrissey's comments...folks, if we do not wake up and learn the truth about what is going on right in front of us, we will be no different than the Germans who watched Hitler rise to power while sitting stupefied on the sidelines. WE, as REPUBLICANS who put AMERICA first - over the struggle for power and control by some in the Precinct, District, County, State, and yes, even the Federal level - have the tools required to return the AZGOP/GOP back into the hands of the people; not just a few, but the many faithful who, for whatever reason, choose to sit silently or worse yet - remain ignorant of the FACTS all around them. How many of you are pleased with what is happening in Washington? How do you think those folks got there?? God did not appoint them - WE, the people sat mute when, little by little, our party was taken over by those with more allegiance to power and control that DUTY TO AMERICA! CONTROL actually rests with us; EACH OF US. Will we finally wake up and speak up? Or will we be the "German people of the 30's"??
PC Lori Hack Response To Matt Kenney's 7-7-17-Briefs Submission: When someone struggles with duplicity, like I believe Matt does, one must first get his moral compass calibrated appropriately before trying to analyze other's actions. With that, let's talk about Matt's work on McCain's project ... Arizona Grassroots Action PAC that is known for bearing false witness against innocent people. Matt, do you have ears to hear because you were the ring master, right? Please explain your dastardly deeds. Most importantly, what is truly the most disturbing is his reference to Christianity. I guess he's overlooked the passage in I John (KJV).
5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanse us from all sin.
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us."
Blasphemy of the Spirit, Matt, is a deadly thing. Careful.
LD18 PC Peggy McClain response to Matthew Kenney's lecture at Secretary Gabby Mercer: It's interesting that instead of responding to the comments about the current state of the AZGOP, Mr. Kenney pivoted and made his response about himself. His life achievements and religion are not relevant. While he offered to meet with those interested one on one, why not address the concerns publicly? Many Arizona PCs read the Briefs and we also would like the situation sorted out. If we meet one on one, will the AZGOP donors' lawyers be present? Also, as far as the relationship between Chairman Lines and Treasurer Latieri, I had called and texted our treasurer over a month ago regarding the Chairmens' trips to Hawaii. I wanted to know if they were funded by the AZGOP. So far no answer. Is that a coincidence? Mr. Kenney, like it or not Secretary Mercer was elected by us. You owe us some explanations to settle the turmoil.
Arizona Town Crier Jim Ehl: In yesterday ’s MCRC Briefs 7-7-17-briefs there are some good articles that one must read. One by Tom Morrissey backing AZGOP Secretary Gabby Mercer’s email to Executive Director Matt Kenney, one by Kenney, one by Navajo County Chairman Russell Sais, Ken MazikowskiK, John Backer, and more! Starting with Morrissey’s statement; he took this opportunity to do credit to Mercer and to defend , or compare, his administration. Then we have Kenney’s reply to Mercer. Hollow! Pray tell what has being a Christian to do with politics? Some pertinent questions by Sais and Mazkowskik concerning the present party’s administration and - who the donors are who run the AZ GOP?? Becker addresses the ‘whining’ going on and has offered to do something about it! All in all this MCRC Briefs shows the continuing breakdown of the Republican Party in Arizona under Chairman Jonathan Lines, started by past Chairman Robert Graham, by publishing all the ‘whining’ going on, and also shows that there is no one, nor organization, that has the backbone to do anything about it!! We have 15 elected leaders in this state, County Chairs, and what the h**l have they done?? We have the AzRA that professed to promote conservatism in all positions of leadership and what the h**l have their 11 chapters done?? Numerous complaints by readers of the MCRC Briefs, and NOTHING!! It’s time to take the ‘bull by the horns”. A ‘notable’ in the party, such as the past chair Morrissey, should request a meeting of the County Chairs and put to rest all these incongruities that befall the party ; and come up with a plan of action suitable to all instead of a Lines/Kenney auto party!!
AFA Team to Mathew Kenney: Arizona Freedom Alliance appreciates your service to our country and would never diminish the value of that. You, of course, know that Gabby Mercer's son is in the military, and we are sure she lives with that quiet sense of fear every day. Using that as an excuse, or perhaps a justification, to mis-handle the AZGOP and those who attend far-flung meetings is less than patriotic or honorable. Your actions over time in Arizona politics have proven to be anything but valuable to the AZGOP. We know that because we have records in our research files on your activities. You are in politics now and in politics, unlike the military, it's all about "what have you done for us lately." What you have done for us lately is to intervene in a meeting of AZGOP with no authority to do so. You are not an elected board member, so perhaps you should read AZGOP Bylaws to see who has authority to rule at meetings. It is not the Executive Director! You have disrespected every Republican in Arizona by your actions at AZGOP, now and while Robert Graham was Chairman. More particularly, you have disregarded every precinct committeeman, held illegitimate court against District Officers in Flagstaff who, by the way, have more authority than you do. Yet you chide the Secretary! If you are truly "proud" of Chairman Lines for hiding records, for running roughshod over PCs and district officers, ignoring the bylaws, then there is a bigger problem than records withheld. A proud military veteran of character would resign immediately based on your mis-management of AZGOP. And please, take the entire staff with you, along with most of the Executive Committee. As you see by our name, we stand for freedom. You are violating that among the PCs.
In An Ongoing Effort to keep the public informed about their property taxes, Maricopa County Treasurer Royce Flora has added new pages to the Treasurer’s website. “Who’s Taxing My Property” debuted this week, informing all property owners of the government entities (cities/towns and school districts) that are levying taxes on their property. “In a series of charts and graphs that display by ranking, property owners can now clearly see how much their property is being taxed and by who,” Flora explained.
