1-6-17 Briefs

Republican Briefs

Editor Frosty Taylor Web Master John Strasser

For The Past Month, Briefs has kept you updated on the Robert Graham vs LD23 Saga , including yesterday’s “informal opinion” released by new Solicitor General Dominic E. Draye in Attorney General Mark Brnovich’s office which resulted in Sonoran Alliance’s Arizona-Solicitor-General-Issues-Opinion-On-Arizona-Gop-Party-Elections. Last night Briefs was alerted to Silliness Trying To Trump Common Sense – a post that debunks what Graham says in the Alliance post about not disenfranchising PCs in LDs and the definition of the undefined-in-a-statute word “mail” as it relates to whether a certain type of mailing would impact whether precinct committeemen could be credentialed and vote at a LD meeting or state meeting. The Silliness Trying To Trump Common Sense author writes: “How many mail angels can dance on the head of the word “mail” in a statute involving giving notice of a meeting of a purely private political organization?  An anonymous writer at Sonoran Alliance posted a silly article.  It contains some choice SILLINESS.”  The writer also refers to Attorney Ted Naeckel Responds To AG Opinion as “a nice summation of the ‘mail’ issue in the context of the Solicitor General’s ‘informal opinion’ as posted in yesterday’s Briefs.

Reader Offers Food For Thought: “If LD 23 Election is invalidated due to the "Mail" issue, LD 24, 25, 16, many others, as well as several County Parties used E-Mail and or US Mail and E-Mail. This will invalidate many LD and County Elections and will also pollute the AZGOP base of State Committeemen as officially elected. The AZGOP may not have a Quorum to proceed as a Statutory Meeting.”

Briefs Has Requested That All Candidates running for AZGOP office and Maricopa County Republican Committee office during the January 2017 Mandatory meetings submit their candidate announcement or a resume for posting to help PCs get acquainted with the candidates they will vote on.

PC Boe James: Thank you for providing the names and other information on the candidates for MCRC and AZ GOP. Thanks also for asking the questions of each and providing to your large audience of readers the answers from those candidates.

LD22 PC Lori Hack: Clearing up and adding to the notification by "mail" drama is that I have been a PC in LD 22 for some time and as of late, I only recall getting notification by email for almost EVERYTHING including county and state call letters. From the ground here, many other LDs are and have done likewise. What is Robert Graham up to now?

Briefs Sent Identical Questions to the three AZGOP Chairman candidates. Their answers will be posted every day until the Jan 28 Mandatory Meeting election. Question #4: What have you done for the AZ party during the past couple of years to warrant the AZGOP party chairmanship?

Jim O’Connor: My service to the AZGOP for the past 11 years has been that of a donor, an active supporter of Republican Candidate campaigns in every election cycle, a CD 5 Member-at-Large in the 2010 cycle, the CD 6 Member-at-Large in the 2012 cycle, and most recently serving LD 23 Republican Committee as its Chairman. While Chairman my leadership team recruited 135 new Precinct Committeemen during the 15 month “appointment period”. We held more precinct pot luck house parties than ever connecting new PCs to their more experienced PC neighbors. We conducted PC trainings at a record pace.

Along with six other district Chairman from the MCRC Executive Guidance Council, participated in nine (9) chairman round table dinner meetings, wherein we discussed how to grow and run our districts. We shared our successes and failures with certain activities such as voter registrations, PC recruiting, dealing with proxies, endorsing candidates in primaries, driving voter turnout, canvassing precincts, endorsement slates and other topics regarding the efficient operation of a legislative district committee.

As the National Popular Vote Compact arose as an issue in need of critical attention in our legislative session 2016, a few of my LD 23 PCs assembled a power point presentation which we took all around the state as the peoples opposition to this very bad bill. Although it passed successfully through our State House with 69% voting in favor, we thankfully provided sufficient evidence to Senate President Andy Biggs, that Arizona Republican PCs did not want our Republicans voting for this bad idea. And it was not heard in the Senate Chamber, therefore, killing the bill. Those efforts continued this fall with visits to many LDs and County’s which subsequently passing Resolutions condemning any future attempts for Republican House & Senate members to support it.

And most recently, I was honored to serve as one of Arizona’s 11 Electoral College members to cast our votes for Donald J. Trump and Michael Pence on December 19, 2016.

Frank Thorwald: First Vice Chairman Maricopa County; PC; Worked on Voter turnout; Certified Voting machine; Ballet Verification; Member of State Party Executive Committee; Numerous speeches: Recruited PCs; Walked my Precinct; Trump Advance.

Jonathan Lines: My service to the Republican Party extends well beyond the past “couple of years.” In fact, I have been working to elect Republicans in Arizona since 1980, when I first walked precincts in support of Ronald Reagan’s election. Since then, I have been honored to be elected to serve as a Precinct Committeeman, a County Party Treasurer, a County Party Chairman as well as the Treasurer of the Arizona Republican Party. In all of these roles, I’ve committed fully to recruiting more Republicans into our party, electing conservative Republican candidates at the local, county, and state level, and, in my current position, ensured that the party is showing financial responsibility and fiscal solvency.

As someone who has been elected and re-elected by the grassroots of our party, I never lose sight of the fact that I am accountable to these conservative leaders. I ensure that I am fully available and accountable to the Republican Precinct Committeemen who have elected me, and twice re-elected me as their chair. The truth is, the party works best when we are run from the bottom up, not top down.

Finally, I’ve worked very hard to raise money for our party and for individual candidates, because I understand that we do not win elections if we allow Democrats, labor unions and trial lawyers to outspend us. I’ve helped steer contributions to dozens of Republican nominees for multiple offices. I’ve truly “put my money where my mouth is” in support of our party. To summarize, I’d put my record of service to the Republican Party up against either of my worthy opponents, and believe that I have the background and experience to serve as Chairman of the Arizona Republican Party.

Tom Morrissey, Immediate Past Chairman AZ GOP: A few words about Tristan Manos to the grassroots of the Republican Party.  Going back to when I was chairman I recall a man who always stepped up to volunteer to do a lot of the grunt work, got it done, and then stepped back.  He seemed to never seek accolades or other pats on the back, for doing what any good patriot might do.  He emanated a quiet strength that got my attention and appreciation.  Tristan and I crossed paths again during the Trump campaign where I witnessed him taking the lead on several fronts, quietly helping to get the job done without requiring any fanfare or ego boosting compliments.  He just did what needed to be done. I can tell you that he is a man of principle who will not be swayed by the Establishment Elite and will make an excellent County Chairman.  He will have Kris and my vote and I strongly encourage my brother and sister patriots to do what we are doing.

Congressman Andy Biggs: Last night, I voted YES on H.Res. 11 – Objecting to the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2334 as an obstacle to Israeli-Palestinian peace because this resolution impedes the opportunity for continued productive, direct negotiation toward peace. On December 23, the Obama administration went against long-standing United States policy by allowing a vote within the United Nations Security Council that condemned Israeli settlements in the West Bank. The U.S. could have easily killed the resolution but instead sent an unmistakable message to Israel and to the rest of the world that this administration did not support our strongest democratic ally in the Middle East. This recent diplomatic slight is a new low for an administration that, for eight long years, has sought to undermine one of our most enduring allies and to embolden her enemies. The actions of the Obama administration do not speak for all Americans, least of all me. I unequivocally stand with Israel, and I am looking forward to working with the incoming Trump administration to change the course of our nation’s relationship with Israel in the coming months. The vote today on H. Res 11 marks a beginning to that process.

Congresswoman Martha McSally led the House of Representatives in a moment of silence honoring the victims of the January 8, 2011 shooting in Tucson. The moment of silence comes a day before McSally announced she will introduce legislation to designate a permanent January 8th National Memorial.
