Republican Briefs

Editor Frosty Taylor  repcomm@cox.net       Web Master John Strasser

UPDATE: What A Tangled Web Is Woven: This weekend, AFA posted AZGOP Candidate Jonathan Lines from Those Who Know Him Best regarding alleged ties between outgoing Chairman Robert Graham/Sen John McCain/Lines; and the AZGOP chairmanship election scheduled at the Jan 28 AZGOP Statutory meeting in Phoenix.

This morning, Lines emphatically denied allegations that he is under McCain’s thumb. Lines told the Briefs, “I am not a McCainite. I am my own man. I flat out deny that I am a McCainite. Those allegations are completely untrue. Not one of the people quoted in the article, nor the article’s author, have the courage to identify themselves publicly or put their name on this trash. I haven’t seen a larger collection of lies and fake news since I accidentally turned my television to CNN. I trust the State Committee members to see through these flat out lies and judge me by my record, the overwhelming 100% acclamation and support that I have from PCs in Yuma, and the work we’ve done collectively to take my blue county and turn it red.”

Reports have circulated for months that Graham handpicked Lines to follow in his footsteps – which is denied by Graham and Lines. A Dec 27, 2016 Briefs post reads: “And speaking of allegations, AZGOP candidates Jonathan Lines and Frank Thorwald, and outgoing AZGOP chairman Robert Graham, deny reports that have circulated for weeks that Graham hand-picked Lines and/or Thorwald as his replacement. archives.mcrcbriefs.org/2016_12_27_archive

Since shortly after the Dec 1, 2016 LD23 Organizational meeting, Briefs has given you a running account of everything from unhappy LD23 PCs to Graham’s effort to disenfranchise the 119 LD23 State Committeemen Graham-Dec 9 letter in an alleged effort to keep O’Connor off of the ballot at the Jan 28 AZGOP meeting. AZGOP Chairman Robert Graham Tries to Invalidate Legitimate State Committeemen Elections

In the meantime, reports circulated of proxy abuse from various LDs Arizona GOP-Shenanigans-Of-Proxy Gathering #1 as unknowns were elected state committeemen. (State committeemen elect the state chairmen) And Arizona GOP-Shenanigans-Of-Proxy Gathering #2

And negotiations between Graham and LD23 legal beagles seem to come to a standstill as newly elected LD23 Chair Nancy Ordowski and O’Connor refused to buckle to Graham’s demands Ordowski Response To Graham and Graham failed to produce the “dozens of complaints” he allegedly received from LD23 PCs. · Bluffers-Gotta-Bluff-And-The-Stakes-Are-High-As-The-By-Mail-Bluff-Did-Not-Work

To top things off, newly elected Maricopa County Chairman Chris Herring jumped into the fray with My Concerns With O'Connor – which some consider a campaign smear job or hit piece against O’Connor since county chairman normally remain neutral in GOP races.

And yesterday’s Colorado River Tea Party Newsletter carries a notation in the Jan 20 CRTP minutes that reads: “Connie Uribe offered a comment: Jonathan (Lines) had said that he had bought an extra ad for Connie to ameliorate the damage done by Townsend and Ferguson openly supporting her Democrat opponent. Connie said the extra ad was published because he had made a mistake on the ad he had published for the entire Republican slate attributing her candidacy to the wrong district. She disputed further his (Lines) claim of fairness. Check out the Secretary of State page. You will discover that he (Lines) gave Diane $540. Darin $300, and Steve $200. Is that fair?...”

This morning Lines said the local newspaper made the error in the ad Uribe refers to and that the newspaper had run a second ad with the correct information.

And so the AZGOP Chairmanship election saga continues as more reports surface. – ft

LD26 State Committeeman Joe Neglia: There seem to be a couple of problems with the 2017 AZGOP Statutory Meeting Call Letter that I just received:

1) The nominations report is incomplete. The 2015 Call letter included this statement: "The Nominations Committee has determined that all ten candidates meet the qualifications for office pursuant to the Continuing by-Laws (sic) of the Arizona Republican Party." This statement is curiously missing from the current call letter. Could it possibly be because one of the candidates is ... Jim O'Connor?

2) The call is apparently in violation of AZGOP Bylaw III.H.2 which

states: "All resolutions submitted to the committee shall be sent with the committee's recommendations and vote count to each state committeeman with the notice of call of the meeting." Interestingly, neither of these items are provided with the resolution opposing the National Popular Vote. Could it possibly be because this resolution was submitted by ... Jim O'Connor?

It sure does seem like the AZGOP chair has his committees on a tight leash!

The Current Tentative List of 1,235 state committeemen can be viewed or downloaded at:  http://az.gop/arizona-republican-state-meeting-2017-committeemen/

The AZGOP Chairman's Awards Dinner 2017 is scheduled at 6 pm., (reception at 5:30 pm.) Fri., Jan 27 at the downtown Phoenix Hyatt Regency Hotel, 122 N 2nd St. in Phoenix. Live entertainment. $60 per person for $500 per table. Tickets at 2017awards@azgop.org 602-957-7770.

The AZGOP Mandatory Meeting for all Arizona Republican State Committeemen is scheduled for Sat., Jan 28, 2017 at the Church of the Nations at 6225 N. Central Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85012. Call headquarters for further information such as credentialing, meeting time, agenda items, etc. 602-957-7770.

ATTN AZGOP State Committeemen: For the past year, PCs and State Committeemen have complained about some of the shenanigans that were pulled at last year’s Maricopa County and AZGOP Statutory meetings. In an effort to prepare this year’s attendees, the Silliness Site has posted a well-researched two-part YouTube video narration Of-Improper-Motions, Voters-Representation, Precinct-Committeemen-Political-Parties-Statutes-And-Bylaws A written version can be downloaded at the same link. It is well worth you time to get acquainted with the guidelines. Watch the video, be prepared, particularly if you think your LD might be targeted for disenfranchisement to keep you from voting on agenda items or from running for an officer position at the Jan 28 AZGOP Statutory meeting in Phoenix. - ft

Briefs Sent Identical Questions to the three AZGOP Chairman candidates the past couple of weeks to help our readers become better acquainted with those seeking to head up the state party. Question #19 - Sen John McCain has had 30 years to do something about the deplorable situation at the Veterans Hospital in Phoenix, nevertheless, whistleblowers contend things haven’t improved since headlines reported the deaths of veterans waiting for appointments/treatment two years ago. Would you support a state committeeman/PC backed resolution reprimanding McCain for not addressing this problem years ago.

JIM O’CONNOR: The long time disappointment of the enormous Veteran’s Affairs Department has become the stuff of governmental legend. All Americans, most of whom are NOT veterans, are saddened by its utter failure to serve those who have served us well. I feel certain than John McCain truly desires positive change in the healthcare needs for vets. This is an agency that submitted a 2017 budget of over $182 Billion; and has more than 300,000 employees This is second largest of all cabinet departments, serving over 10 million veterans and other related people as well. The VA medical care has about 1,400 sites of care throughout the U.S. and its territories. Realistically, it would likely take much more than a Senator to meaningfully move this behemoth, even with the best intentions and is a notable example of the problem of big government. I would support any positive requests to seek improvement. I would NOT support a reprimand. Our Party and our nation needs this naval man “on deck” for positively influencing the many Trump initiatives that I support and are soon to pass into the spheres of Senator McCain’s influence. He could be a vital ally in resolving many of the issues, particularly Arizona’s, when it comes to border and national security. Like many of us, I don’t always agree with him, but I am hopeful that he will fit as many issues as he can into his coming work, including the VA. Many of us need to positively encourage all senators toward their efforts on the extensive legislation anticipated from the new President. I believe the AZGOP needs to place its focus on those things we are able to achieve. Each party member is free to express their feelings on issues to their elected representatives.  The AZGOP is not the vehicle for delivery that expression over every public policy issue.

JONATHAN LINES: There are no citizens who deserve our honor and respect more than our veterans. They have truly borne the burden to keep us safe, and to take the fight to our enemies so that we may continue to enjoy the freedoms that God has provided. My brother is on active duty and I have many friends and family members who are veterans. I am incredibly thankful for their service. I think we have all been disgusted by the Obama administration’s neglect of our veterans. We have all been shocked and outraged by the reports of systematic failures in our VA system. Our heroes have been left behind. And I am so thankful that the Trump Administration will actually make sure that our veterans are getting the help and care that they need. To me, Veterans issues are not political or partisan. Everyone who has put themselves in harm’s way in defense of our nation must be cared, and when the VA fails in this mission, heads should roll. I am humbled by the sacrifice of our veterans and will do whatever I can to make sure they get the service and care that they have so richly earned.

FRANK THORWALD: No response at post time.

Yavapai County Chairman Mark Sensmeier has saved a file of all the Q&A that have been posted as the AZGOP Chairman Candidates response to Briefs questions. He will make his file available to Yavapai state committeemen before they head for the Jan 28 AZGOP Statutory meeting in Phoenix this coming weekend.

AZGOP Chairman candidate Jonathon Lines: After publication of the 100-Day plan, Republicans and grassroots leaders across the state gave me some additional guidance on what they wanted, and needed, from the party. In response to their advice, I have added three additional programs, which, if elected Chairman of the AZ GOP, I will develop shortly after assuming the post. These will help every PC across our state to fulfill our goals. I invite you to go to my website www.linesforazgop.com to read the full 100 Day Plan.1 Mission – 15 Counties. #turnall15red

A “Back the Badge” Rally is scheduled between 10 am-noon, Sat., Jan 28 at the American Legion Earl E Mitchell Post #29, 6822 N 57th Drive in Glendale (across the Glendale PD headquarters. Co-sponsored by Expendables Motorcycle Club of Arizona, a motorcycle procession will kick off the event and a Thin Blue Line flag will be presented the Glendale Police Dept and the family of fallen GPD officers Bradley Jones. A SWAT vehicle and gear will be on display. Free and open to the public. Aaron Leach will provide music.

AZ Town Crier Jim Ehl: I know a past Republican representative who believed that they represented ALL of the voters in the district.  And, if there was a bill on the floor, and the rep had received more communications from Democrats than Republicans in the District, that rep. voted Democratic.  Had that rep. received a call from the state chair expressing how the Republican voters feel about a particular bill, just how would that rep. responded?   The AZ GOP should be more than a recruitment committee.  Concerns of the thousands of PCs should be of prime concern. In summary, as it stands now, if one is a PC in the county, one has no say in party decisions.  If one, then is a state committeemen your time is wasted as evidence by the censure of a politician who was re-elected after the censure because of inaction by the party leadership and influenced by RINOs.

CONGRESSIONAL STATEMENTS/ACTION

300 word limit policy. If statements exceed the limit, it will be edited

Congressman Andy Biggs after the inauguration of President Donald J. Trump as the nation's 45th President: Today was the 58th Presidential Inauguration and the swearing in of our 45th President. It’s an amazing time to be in Washington, D.C. Many people are filled with great optimism for our country. Hundreds of thousands of people are here for this occasion, and millions more tuned into the event on their televisions or live-streamed from their computers. This morning, I was behind the platform in front of the Capitol dome, watching Donald J. Trump and Mike Pence recite the oath of office. It was truly an honor to have been among the leaders of our country witnessing this historic event. For over 200 years, America has transferred leadership from President to President, from party to party. Many elections, such as this past election, have been contentious, but this country has found a way to peacefully pass the baton to its new Commander in Chief. This is one of the many attributes that make our country one of the strongest and freest in the world, and I am extremely grateful to witness another example of the peaceful transition of power between Presidents. As the new administration takes office, we also inherit the great responsibility to lead the country, to listen to the people who elected us, and to keep the promises we made to our constituents. I believe that the Trump administration will keep its promises to the American people, and I look forward to working with him to help make Arizona’s 5th Congressional District greater than ever before. Cindy and I will be praying for our new President and his entire Administration as they accept this office and hope that wisdom guides their way.

US Sen John McCain on the confirmation of General John Kelly to the position of Secretary of Homeland Security: “Congratulations to Secretary John Kelly on his confirmation today by the United States Senate. I’m confident that Secretary Kelly’s decades of service and deep understanding of the challenges we face make him uniquely equipped for the position. I look forward to working with him to advance solutions to protect our citizens and keep our communities safe.”

US Sen John McCain, Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, on the confirmation of General James Mattis to the position of Secretary of Defense: “I congratulate Secretary of Defense James Mattis on his confirmation by the United States Senate. I look forward to working with him on the many issues confronting the Department of Defense and our military service members. America is fortunate to have Secretary Mattis in her service once again.”

Sen John McCain, Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, on Chinese bullying of South Korea: “Earlier this week, Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a hollow lecture on the importance of free trade. The communist leader even invoked Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, an allusion that can only be explained by either a supreme lack of self-awareness or willful hypocrisy. Meanwhile, China is escalating its campaign of economic retaliation against South Korea for the joint alliance decision to deploy the THAAD missile defense system to the Korean Peninsula to defend against the escalating North Korean threat. China has cut off charter flights from South Korea, banned imports of South Korean cosmetics and other products, outlawed South Korean music, and threatened South Korean companies. China has done all of this to stop the deployment of a missile defense system, which is only necessary because China has aided and abetted North Korea for decades. Actions speak louder than words. If China believes in free trade and has genuine concerns about the deployment of THAAD in South Korea, it should cease its attempts to undermine South Korea’s sovereign ability to defend itself and use its considerable influence to pressure North Korea to stop its destabilizing behavior.”

Sens John McCain and Lindsey Graham on supporting the nomination of Rex Tillerson to be Secretary of State: "After careful consideration, and much discussion with Mr. Tillerson, we have decided to support his nomination to be Secretary of State. Though we still have concerns about his past dealings with the Russian government and President Vladimir Putin, we believe that Mr. Tillerson can be an effective advocate for U.S. interests. Now more than ever, with America's friends growing more discouraged and our enemies growing more emboldened, we need a Secretary of State who recognizes that our nation cannot succeed in the world by itself. We must strengthen our alliances and partnerships across the globe, and marshal them to defend our shared vision of world order. It is the American people more than anyone else who have benefited from this long tradition of U.S. global leadership. The views that Mr. Tillerson has expressed, both privately and publicly during the confirmation process, give us confidence that he will be a champion for a strong and engaged role for America in the world."
