1-25-17 Briefs

Republican Briefs

Editor Frosty Taylor         Web Master John Strasser

Yavapai County Chairman Mark Sensmeier has graciously offered to share a file he made of the 20 Q&A that Briefs posted as the AZGOP Chairman Candidates responded to Briefs reader questions. He also tossed in some of the candidate announcements that were submitted to Briefs. If you want a copy, Sensmeier can be reached at

Anna Morrison:  I would like to advise you that Ardith Hildebrandt's call letter did go out.  I worked at the AZGOP office last week when we were stuffing the envelopes and I personally saw hers go in the mail. Editor’s Note: Morrison is referring to Hildebrant’s 1-24-17-briefs message that she had not yet received her call letter. Call letters are to be mailed to state committeemen at least 10 days before a Statutory meeting.

And Speaking Of Call Letters, the 119 LD23 State Committeemen still don’t know whether they will be credentialed when they arrived at the AZGOP Convention on Saturday due to the upheaval over whether the LD23 letter was legally sent out via e-mail instead of snail mail. In the meantime, reports are coming in from Yuma County PCs claiming they, too, received their Organizational Meeting Call Letters via e-mail. Ironically, both the LD23 immediate past chairman Jim O’Connor and Yuma County Chairman Jonathan Lines are in a heated race to replace outgoing AZGOP Chairman Robert Graham. Some state committeemen are having a little difficulty understanding why Graham threatens to Disenfranchise O’Connor’s delegation over e-mail delivered Call Letters, but not Lines delegation that also got e-mail delivered Call Letters? Speculation is that Graham wants to keep O’Connor off the ballot. Although reports have circulated for months that Graham handpicked Lines as his replacement, both Graham and Lines deny the allegations.

Lines told Briefs that comments in AFAs AZGOP Candidate Jonathan Lines From Those Who Know Him Best that he has a temper and yells at PCs were untrue. Lines said he never raises his voice or yells at people. However, Yuma PC and retired surgeon Dr. Connie Uribe, told Briefs last night that Lines has yelled at her in meetings for challenging him on various issues.

Uribe, A Retired Surgeon, confirmed concerns that Lines is overextended and doesn’t have time to take on the state chairmanship due to his businesses and large family (11 children). In a letter written to Lines in January or February of 2016, the Rio Colorado Republican Women’s Club expressed “…concern about the lack of Central Committee meetings, and the lack of fundraisers.” It further states, “We feel like lost sheep without our shepherd and miss your guidance. We feel as though we are being left out in the cold. This is an election year, and it is just a little over two months until the presidential preference election. Our primary election is August 30. Other offices will also be on that ballot and we have not met any of the candidates yet. With the November general election getting closer with each passing day, we feel left behind and that we will fail in getting out the vote. The thought of another democrat holding the oval office for four more years is terrifying. We also believe there needs to be training for Precinct Committeemen. Do you have a date set for our next Central Committee meeting? Are any fundraisers planned, particularly ones that are open to the Precinct Committeemen? Please advise as soon as possible.”

If elected AZGOP Chair, Lines does not plan to resign as the Yuma County Republican Committee chairman. Lines says he will spend two days a week at the AZGOP headquarter in Phoenix and hire an assistant to maintain the daily GOP operations when he isn’t there. Lines points out he was re-elected Yuma County Chairman by acclamation. Others note he has a large extended family, many who are PCs, and that he carried enough proxies to the meeting to assure his re-election as the Yuma chair.

Graham And Lines Also Deny Stories that have circulated since the first of the year that Graham spent time in Yuma training Lines for the AZGOP chairmanship. Lines and Graham say Graham accepted Lines invitation (including wife Julia and their six kids), to visit Lines family and spent time on Lines shooting range. Graham said, “…My family and the Lines have known each other for many years.  The Graham family was invited to go shooting on January 2nd with the Lines family and friends from Yuma.  We arrived late on January 1st and I personally left late afternoon on January 2nd.  I have never conducted any training in Yuma for their county, the PCs or Jonathan as Chairman…” See Graham’s Facebook photos or go to Barbara Espinosa’s AZGOP-Robert-Graham-And-Length-He-Will Go To Pick His Successor And Her Update-On-AZGOP-Chairman-Robert-Grahams Visit With Jonathan Lines In Yuma

A Big Thank You Goes To Kathy Hedges and her volunteer teams that stuffed the envelopes, fill the registration packets, and made the name badges for the Saturday AZGOP Statutory meeting. It’s no easy task to make sure supplies are prepared for the 1,235 state committeemen expected to arrive in Phoenix. The list of 1,235 State Committeemen can be viewed or downloaded at:

President Donald Trump Will Take Executive Action Today directing federal resources toward building a border wall, a White House official confirmed to CNN. The move begins a multi-day roll out of immigration actions that's also expected to include moves related to refugees and visas. Trump will make the announcement during a visit to the Department of Homeland Security at 1:25 p.m. EST.

Chelsea Handler took a swipe at Melania Trump saying she wouldn't interview the First Lady because "she can barely speak English." Perhaps the comedian, who does not hold a college degree, should do her research first. The First Lady speaks at least five languages, including English, French, Italian, German, and Slovene. As far as we can tell, Handler speaks but one. Continue Reading...

Meet Phoenix City Council candidate Chris DeRose , a New York Times bestselling author of three books who is running in the March 14 city council race. An attorney, he has prosecuted murderers, street gangs, and people who commit crimes against children. He has tried more than 40 cases on appeal and argued twice before the Arizona Supreme Court. He served for five years as a member of a village planning committee as well as the governing board for Phoenix Collegiate Academy, a high performing inner-city charter school.

An award-winning historian, DeRose has addressed audiences around the country, including members of Congress at the U.S. Capitol, and a capacity crowd at New York's Bryant Park.  He serves as Chairman of the Board of Scholarly Advisors for President Lincoln's Cottage, a historic site in Washington DC.  He was most recently senior litigation counsel for Attorney General Mark Brnovich, where he prosecuted major felonies, tried over 40 cases in the court of appeals, and argued twice before the Arizona Supreme Court.  He is a former professor of Constitutional and International law, and was voted by his students as "Professor of the Year."  And has been named by the Phoenix Business Journal as a "Top 40 Under 40" leader.

He will add 500 police officers over the next five years and develop a comprehensive plan to fight crime. He will stand against more taxing and runaway spending. Phoenix has raised billions of dollars in sales taxes, food taxes, and water taxes, and recklessly wasted your money. Now City Hall has increased your property taxes 26%. DeRose has lived in Phoenix for over 10 years. He and his fiancé, Hannah Lawther, are getting married in the fall. Contact : Campaign Manager Whitney Lawrence at

Former LD14 Chair Tom Crosby: How would you keep AZ from going blue since the Rep party has gone that way?  Frosty, that is exactly the question.  I have posted everywhere I get the chance, that when the Dems continue to tank, progressives will continue to infiltrate the Repub party.  It's nothing new.  Repubs that are progressives, or that aren't paying attention, will be crying "Unity, Unity", like we're all so used to hearing.  But that is the cry that has gotten us to where we are.  RINO's are fascists.  Nationalism is easily swayed into facism Religious Ecumenism "being weak in its foundational principles is easily swayed for political purposes." Fascism, unlike communism, works economically, so it seems tempting to go that direction to get out of an economic slump.

Zack Taylor, Chairman and Border Security Expert National Association of Former Border Patrol Officers: As you know, has been alerting America to the corruptive effects of money and power in Congress for over a decade. This influence of money and power is especially corrosive to the American way of life when it adversely affects how and what the media reports. the-fake-news-business-reporters-tell-me-the-truth-off-the-record is from a practitioner in the press - essentially about the print press that touches on many of the aspects we have outlined in the past - and should be mandatory reading for every American. The fourth estate, the press as a whole, is in large part responsible for the problems we have in America today because of misinformation and disinformation in reporting. Behind misinformation and disinformation is an agenda.  Learn to recognize it.

Anita Christy, Gila Watch: Arizona's Newest K-12 Math Standards No Different than Common Core. Superintendent Diane Douglas may have conned members of the state legislature, who have far more on their plate than to question her “repeal and replace” Common Core shell game.  She may also have successfully deceived the low information voters.  But, no matter how much she rants, raves, and bullies, she didn’t succeed with the Mommy Lobby, members of the Arizona Standards Development CommitteeArizonans Against Common Core, Breitbart, Itasca Small writing for the Arizona Daily Independent, Seeing Red Arizona, or various Stop Common Core facebook groups: Click HERE, HERE, HERE, and HERE.   One of the mothers with the Mommy Lobby volunteered her time to do a 73-page comparison of the old Common Core K-12 Math Standards against Arizona’s Final “repealed and replaced” Draft.

Arizona Town Crier Jim Ehl: Our fight now thru Saturday must shift from Lines to Graham. Unless stopped by reason or any value he assigns to his reputation, he MUST step down or be removed as chairman before or at the State meeting on January 28th. Beforehand would be good in that it may save our party further embarrassment, but if he cannot be convinced to step down the explosion within that meeting room on Saturday will show us all just what our party values. Most all of us want a clean and fair election. The three candidates have shown us all who they are and if they stand on principle. Let the vote proceed.

Robert ‘Bob’ Lettieri, candidate for AZGOP Treasurer: For the last 23 years I have been responsible for providing shareholders, investors and regulatory agencies with information demonstrating accountability at the highest level.  “Hypothetically”, if you were a shareholder in a company that in six years lost 61% of its customer base I think you would be concerned. If the same company six years ago generated 14.7% of its revenue from major customers and this fiscal cycle generated 76.4% of its revenue from major customers that should be cause for concern.  Your concern would be that a loss of any one major customer could lead to financial instability of the company. Additionally over the most current reporting cycle the total receipts of this company were 30% less than its closest competitor.

This exactly what’s happening to the AZGOP.

  • In the election cycle of 2012 the AZGOP received 1,539 Itemized Individual contributions from 1,055 contributors.
  • In the 2016 cycle, 597 itemized individual contributions from 378 contributors. A decrease of 64% in contributor’s
  • In the 2012 cycle, 14.8% of Itemized Individual contributions came from major contributors.
  • In 2016 the AZGOP received 76.4% of Itemized Individual contributions from major contributors. This represents an increase of 62% in Itemized Individual contributions from major contributors.

Are we becoming the party of the chosen few?  I know from experience that the SEC considers revenue concentration a red Flagg and so should we fellow Republicans.

In the election cycle of 2016 the AZGOP received $1,133,729 of itemized individual contributions from 378 contributors with the Republicans representing 34.6% of registered voters. By contrast in the election cycle of 2016 the AZ Democratic Party received $1,233,239 of Itemized Individual contributions from 1,830 contributors with 30.4% of registered voters being Democrats. Doesn’t this mean that the Democrats are getting more participation and broadening their base of active supporters while our AZGOP are content to rely on fewer and fewer while allowing the AZGOP to rely on larger but fewer Republicans that are contributing there financial resources.

In the election cycle of 2016 the AZ Democratic Party received 30% or $2,265,751 more in Total receipts (from all sources which includes Itemized Individual contributions) than the AZGOP. I have a plan to reverse these negative trends. Above information available on the FEC.GOV website; select Details for Committees and review Arizona Republican Party 2016 Election Cycle reported by Jonathan Lines, a candidate for AZGOP Chairman.
