Republican Briefs

AZGOP Chair Jonathon Lines Keeps Robert Graham’s AZGOP Staff: Lines to PCs: Some quick personnel news to share.  While most of the AZGOP staff has moved on to seek other opportunities, I am very pleased that two senior members of the team have agreed to remain on board.

Avinash Iragavarapu has been serving as the Executive Director since March 2016, and has worked with the party since 2014. Last year, Avinash guided the party through a cycle that ultimately saw the GOP carry Arizona for President Trump, retain our U.S. Senate seat, re-elect Martha McSally, and hold onto majorities in the State House and State Senate. Avinash has been an invaluable resource to me as I've assumed the role as chairman, and I'm thrilled that he’s going to stay on to run the day to day operations at party headquarters.

Tim Sifert has been with the Arizona GOP since 2012, handling a wide array of responsibilities including communications and compliance. His institutional knowledge, familiarity with our bylaws and leadership throughout the transition has been instrumental. Tim will continue to handle all compliance and finance-related issues and will work alongside our new treasurer and myself to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting, as well as strict adherence to all bylaws and Arizona statutes which govern the AZGOP.

Timothy Lee will also remain on the AZGOP team as our compliance director. We are hitting the ground running with our first training. Timothy will conduct Treasurer’s Training for all County and LD Treasurers and Chairmen 9am -1pm., Sat., Feb 11 at AZGOP Headquarters, 3501 N 24th St in Phoenix. Contact Timothy at 85008phx@gmail.com or on his cell at (602) 518-5860

Please join me in thanking Avinash, Tim and Timothy for their willingness to continue to serve. Finally, please also join me in thanking Teresa Martinez for her work in heading up our transition over the last two weeks as well. Teresa is returning to her service to Congressman Paul Gosar and Secretary of State Michele Reagan.

Border-Patrol-Arrests-Deadly-Suspects Because CBP confirmed to Breitbart Texas that one man was an Iraqi national and one was an Egyptian national. Both are currently detained.

Former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio: Thank you to Scott Olsen, a private citizen, for the kind words on his billboard found along I-10 west of I-17. It was an honor to serve the people of Maricopa County for 24 years.

Congressman Trent Franks: I want to know your position on President Trump’s Executive Order temporarily halting immigration from seven countries identified by the Obama Administration as being “countries of concern” and needing further extreme vetting. As someone compelled by compassion for those less fortunate, while primarily devoted to the protection of our national security,  I support the President for taking action to secure our nation. While there has been a host of misinformation, here are the facts. The Executive Order pauses refugee programs for 120 days to improve vetting process.

·         Places a 90-day ban on non-U.S. Citizens from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen

·         Puts immediate hold on entry of Syrian refugees

·         Allows exception for green card holders with application and approval of waiver

·         Allows exception for minority religions experiencing persecution

John McCain, R-Ariz., to apologize to the family of a fallen Navy SEAL. Taya Kyle, a Fox News contributor, joined Fox & Friends Thursday morning and blasted McCain for saying that the recent raid on al-Qaida forces in Yemen was not a success because Chief Petty Officer William Ryan Owens was killed in the risky operation. White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer has also demanded an apology from McCain, the head of the Senate Armed Services Committee. And now the president himself has taken to Twitter to condemn McCain’s remark that he says “emboldens the enemy.”

Secretary of State Michele Reagan’s legislative fixes to several of the issues that arose during the 2016 election cycle have been formerly introduced in the state legislature.  Combined with a comprehensive review of the Elections Procedures Manual this spring, Secretary Reagan seeks solutions to the problems she uncovered during four statewide elections. Beginning with the lines many voters experienced in Maricopa County during the Presidential Preference Election (PPE), Secretary Reagan is pushing for SB 1391 sponsored by Senator Martín Quezada.  The bill would require County Recorders and local election officials to meet annually with the Secretary of State to develop standards related to wait times and the number, location and staffing levels of polling places.  In addition, the bill seeks to ensure the proper amount and type of voting equipment used in polling places, and establish best practices for the prevention of intimidation or harassment of voters. Congresswoman Martha McSally has announced her office is accepting applications for the Young Women’s Leadership Program. At the one-day event, which is open to high school girls living or attending school in the Second District, women leaders from around Southern Arizona will speak with participants about achieving more in their education and careers. “I’m passionate about this program because it shows girls in our community that their opportunity is limitless,” said McSally. “A role model can be a powerful thing, and we have so many incredibly accomplished women in Southern Arizona. Sharing their stories of perseverance and success can inspire the next generation of young women leaders to set their goals high and let nothing stand in their way.” In its second year of operation, the Young Women’s Leadership Program will provide participants the opportunity to engage with their peers and guests in candid discussions while sharing insights, advice, and stories. Last year’s event included women leaders in the fields of business, emergency response, education, and more. Applications for the event, which will be held on April 22, can be found HERE A panel of women leaders from the Second District will review the applications and select participants for the program. Applications can be turned in via fax at (520) 322-9490, emailed to Nancy Heiser at Nancy.Heiser@mail.house.gov, or delivered to the Tucson or Sierra Vista district offices by 5 pm, Friday, April

Sen John McCain, Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, on General John Nicholson’s testimony before the committee today on the stalemate in Afghanistan: “After 15 years of war, we are in a stalemate in Afghanistan. That was the assessment of our commander in Afghanistan, Gen. John Nicholson, before the Senate Armed Services Committee, and it should be deeply concerning to all Americans. This is the legacy of eight years of the Obama administration in which missions were unclear, troop levels were arbitrarily capped, the hands of our troops were tied with restrictive authorities, and conditions on the ground seemed to matter less than considerations of domestic politics. The Obama administration's strategy in Afghanistan was not to lose. We need a strategy to win. Fortunately, General Nicholson also testified that he is developing such a strategy. I am confident President Trump and Secretary Mattis will turn the page on eight years of merely trying to avert failure. We must empower our commanders on the ground and the brave men and women fighting in Afghanistan to turn the tide in that conflict, support our Afghan partners, and protect our homeland from our terrorist enemies.”
