2-18-17 Briefs

Republican Briefs

Editor Frosty Taylor        Web Master John Strasser

A Statewide Arizona Republican Assembly (AzRA) meeting is scheduled at 10 am., Sat., Feb 18 at the Devonshire Senior Center  2802 East Devonshire Road  Phoenix, 85016  (1 block N of Indian School Road on 28th Street).   All Conservative Republicans welcome.

Former U.S. Congressman and Scottsdale businessman Frank Riggs: I was saddened to see the news of Bob Michel's passing today. He was a U.S. Congressman from Illinois (the area once represented by Congressman Abraham Lincoln!) and the Republican Leader in the House when I was first elected to Congress, and made me feel welcome as a new member of the House Republican Conference (Caucus).  My very first vote as a newly-sworn Congressman in Jan., 1991 (102nd Congress) was for his election as Speaker. He wasn't too please when I and my fellow "Gang of 7" members (all Republican freshmen) exposed the congressional abuses at the House Bank and Post Office, but he understood we ran to change Congress. None other than Newt Gingrich credited the Gang of 7 - and the Contract With America - for paving the way for the Republican Revolution of 1994 which put Republicans in the majority in the House for the first time in 40 years and led to Gingrich's election as Speaker! Bob Michel truly earned the title "Honorable" for his service in Congress but I admired him most for being a WW II combat veteran who participated in the D-Day invasion and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was wounded in action and received two Bronze Stars, Purple Heart, and four battle stars.I'm happy he's reunited in Heaven with his wife after a long and distinguished life as a "Man of the House" and Great American. in memoriam

Activist Patty Stet: Frosty-Thank you for the link to the live video "Voter Fraud Crisis" sponsored by Judicial Watch. Hopefully we'll have some power behind the vote fraud investigation.

LD22 Bill Gaddis, Indian Wells Captain: Thanks for putting the info on Flake and defeating him. That should be a major goal for all of us is to get rid of those that are worse than RINOS they are Democrats in Republican Office and work against our cause every chance they get.

Ron Gosselin: Frosty, State Treasurer Jeff DeWit would be a great candidate to run against Jeff Flake. Jeff has been a strong supporter of President Trump and is well known throughout the State of Arizona and has a very good report with the Citizens of Arizona.  No other person would have a chance to beat Flake. Jeff is the most logical one. Kelli Ward does not have a chance to beat Jeff Flake as she is not a Conservative as her voting record as a State Senator proves. Kelli Ward will have a hard time to raise money for her campaign, it will take over $10 Million to beat Jeff Flake. Jeff DeWit will not have a hard time raising that money, especially being in the Trump Camp. That is as I see it.

Town Crier Jim Ehl to AZGOP Chairman Jonathan Lines: You billed your publication as  “Welcome to the AZGOP Daily Update!” and then said. “This is YOUR newsletter, so feel free to send any feedback.”  So, here goes, again. Please consider your readership, and who you represent!  For example, what do any of the rest of the articles have to do with AZ GOP leadership and actions?  All that info can be read in newspapers or things like the MCRC reports or blogs.  Why try to complete with them?  It’s redundant!  Like the bylaws state, “Chairman: The state chairman shall be the recognized leader of the state party and, in cooperation with the county chairmen, shall coordinate statewide party activities.”  It’s information about things like that and more information about thing like you told the Chamber that we are thirsty for, not things that do not involve AZ GOP leadership or actions!

Tracy Livingston, An 18-year teacher and a member/past President of the Maricopa County Community College District Board, has announced her candidacy for the State Superintendent of Public Instruction position. Livingston said, "I am a public school teacher because I wanted to make a difference in kids lives, but the restrictions I am now forced to teach under mean I simply can't do the things I set out to do. For 18 years, I have worked with some of the most disadvantaged students in our system. There have been many changes to our school system, few of them good. The ability of teachers to work with students to create instruction and curriculum that meets their specific needs has been taken away . Our school leaders became obsessed with test scores. And the breakdown in classroom discipline leaves teachers afraid of their own classrooms.”

“The non-traditional student of 25 years ago is the traditional student today. Two parent households seem like the exception. We need a system that strives to meet their individual needs through flexibility and choice. We need a system that holds everyone accountable, yet still leaves room for creativity. And we need great teachers ready to tackle these challenges head-on.” She continued, “Diane Douglas promised to end Common Core and give teachers back the power in our classrooms. That hasn't happened. After 18 years in the classroom, I know what it takes to get that done. It's time for a teacher to lead our schools."

Livingston is a graduate of Arizona State University with a Bachelor’s in Broadcasting from the Walter Cronkite School, and a Masters of Education. She is a former a Peoria Unified School Board member, and has been a Republican LD22 precinct committeeman since 2011. She and her husband, David - a LD22 Representative - live in Peoria. They have one son, Kyle, an EMT in Prescott.

Activist Bill Baxter: He says ‘wake up, America’.  Dennis Kucinich has been a curmudgeon, but I don’t think you will disagree what he says in Intel community trying to undermine trump's presidency? It is worth a few moments to understand what Trump is up against.   The intelligence community is rogue, trying to re-establish their dominance and that of the ‘deep state’ anatomy-of-the-deep-state.  They are trying to destroy his presidency before he even starts.  The ‘intelligence community’ is the arrowhead of the globalist ‘establishment’ and those unelected forces who have dominated our policies for several decades now.  If you think they are protecting us, I hate to burst your bubble, but they are your enemy.

Tell me what advantage the NSA and CIA have afforded us. My take is that they have supported perpetual war and the globalist agenda, which is redundant.  That goes back to the invasion of Iraq, where we destroyed the balance of power in the Middle East and the disaster that has unfolded since.  Does anyone think the invasion of Iraq helped us?  I told my wife in 2003, that Bush destroyed his presidency and stability in the Middle East via that invasion.

So why do we need CIA and NSA?   Really think they increase your security?  I don’t.  Our military can watch the opponents.  What good has the intelligence community done us?  It only leads us down rat holes that are not good for the country.  The USSR is dead, and anyone who attributes equivalent threat to the current Russia is simply uninformed.  Who has stopped attacks in the US?  Not the intelligence community.  The FBI and other domestic policing agencies have done that.  So the intelligence community just completed a data center in Utah that can hold every bit of data about every person on the globe.  Does that make us safer and increase freedom?  I doubt it.  Draw your own conclusions.

Center for Arizona Policy President Cathi Herrod: Babies can and do survive attempted abortions. Yet, in our state, some are left to die and not given every chance at life. On Wednesday before the Senate Health and Human Services Committee, Senator Steve Smith  shared the true story behind CAP-supported SB 1367, stating “The baby was placed on a cold medical table alive… 20 minutes the baby lay there receiving no medical attention, and died.” He continued, “Can we at least finally agree… this is a living baby and everything should be done to save it?”  Expert testimony by Dr. Paul Liu, a Pediatric Critical Care Specialist, proved up the points. He testified that viability is a moving target and that babies born as early as 21-22 weeks can go on to live healthy lives. Responding to opponents, Dr. Liu corrected those calling the baby a fetus saying, “It is a baby. A fetus is inside the womb.” Incredibly, a doctor representing the American College of Ob-Gyn doctors testified that these babies should be given “comfort care” and left to die.Thankfully, SB 1367 passed 5-2 and now moves to the full Senate for consideration as early as next week. Track its progress here. Bill text SB 1367

AzCDL Alert: The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has been seeking comments on a plan that will determine the availability of areas in the Sonoran Desert National Monument (SDNM) that will be available for target shooting.  The deadline for commenting is March 14, 2017.  BLM has held four public meetings on this issue and has one more scheduled for February 21, 2017 at the Burton Barr Central Library in Phoenix. NRA information on the BLM proposal, the upcoming meeting and how to submit comments to the BLM can be found here BLM's original intent was to close the SDNM to target shooting.  The NRA was successful in getting the BLM to revisit the issue.  This is most likely the final round over the future of target shooting in the Monument area.  The Arizona Citizens Defense League encourages you to review the NRA information and urge the BLM to keep the SDNM open to target shooting.

Congressional Western Caucus Chairman Paul A. Gosar after Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt was confirmed by the U.S. Senate by a bipartisan vote of 52-46 to serve as Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA): “President Trump’s selection of Scott Pruitt for EPA Administrator is a clear signal that people, not politics, will be the top priority of his administration. Scott Pruitt believes the EPA should work with local and state governments to enact common-sense regulations that will protect the environment without crushing our economy,” said Gosar. “I enthusiastically support Administrator Pruitt and I know that he will listen to the unique concerns of Western communities and work with Congress to develop positive legislative solutions. The Western Caucus looks forward to working with him closely.”

Congresswoman Martha McSally after the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) re-posted a batch of documents related to animal welfare inspections. The actions follow a letter sent by Rep. McSally this week calling on USDA to restore all animal welfare inspection reports after they were removed abruptly from a government website on February 3. “This is an encouraging sign, and I commend USDA for taking steps to restore transparency,” said McSally. “The inhumane treatment of animals serves no place in our society. I will continue to work with my colleagues from both sides of the aisle to see all records re-posted online where they can be available again to the public.”

McSally’s bipartisan letter, sent on Tuesday, was signed by 101 House members (including Rep. McSally).

Today, Congressional Western Caucus Chairman Paul A. Gosar after the House successfully passed Vice-Chairman Don Young’s bill, H.J. Res. 69, by a recorded bipartisan vote of 225-193, legislation that overturns a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) rule that undermines Alaska’s authority to manage fish and wildlife on state, private and federal lands: “This rule is another classic example of bureaucratic overreach and I applaud Representative Young for his excellent work and leadership on this issue. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game knows best how to manage fish and wildlife in the State of Alaska and this bill ensures they are able to do precisely that,” said Gosar. “I am pleased to see this bill pass through the House and encourage my Senate colleagues to take up and pass this legislation in a timely manner.”

Excerpt from Congressman Paul A. Gosar’s testimony before the House Judiciary’s Subcommittee on Regulatory Reform, Commercial and Antitrust Law during a legislative hearing on his bill, H.R. 372, the Competitive Health Insurance Reform Act of 2017: “As Congress once again faces the preeminent task of repairing our nation’s health care system, first and foremost, we must establish the proper foundation for a competitive and consumer-driven health insurance marketplace. The Competitive Health Insurance Reform Act of 2017 will restore the application of federal anti-trust and competition laws to the health insurance industry.
“Ending this special-interest exemption is the essential first step to broader healthcare reform. Popular cost-reducing reform priorities – such as selling insurance across state lines and developing diverse consumer-driven plans – are predicated on the robust competitive markets this bill will ensure.
“As a healthcare provider for more than 25 years, I understand first-hand the importance of a competitive and dynamic health insurance market. Patients, doctors, and hospitals alike benefit when health insurers compete to provide a variety quality coverage options.
“Imagine what could exist when we put the patient first and demand that health insurance companies compete for their business. This market should be patient-centric, provide a variety of affordable, quality options, and empower patient involvement and accountability.
“The passage of the Competitive Health Insurance Reform Act into law is an important first step towards increasing competition in health insurance markets, and will assist with setting the foundation for real, competitive, and patient-centered healthcare reform.”Gosar’s full statement from today’s hearing
