Republican Briefs

Condolences To The Family Of Long-Time Wrestling Coach Craig Anderson. Anderson was known state-wide as one of the best wrestling coaches from the late 60s at Paradise Valley High School thru the 80s when he retired from Shadow Mountain High School. Anderson lost his battle with bone cancer March 22. A celebration of life will be announced later. Paradise Valley School Board member Mark Lane said Anderson will also be recognized during the April 6 Paradise Valley School Board meeting.

Gov. Doug Ducey Signed Legislation making Arizona the fifth state to join a national movement dedicated to enacting a state-of-the-art constitutional balanced budget amendment. The Compact for a Balanced Budget, HB2226, enters Arizona into an interstate compact that both organizes a convention of states for proposing a specific pre-drafted balanced budget amendment and simultaneously commits each state in the compact to ratifying that amendment and following the steps involved in the amendment process.Arizona joins Alaska, Georgia, Mississippi and North Dakota in this formal agreement to amend the U.S. Constitution. Once 33 more states enter into the compact and Congress signals its approval, a Balanced Budget Amendment could be added to the U.S. Constitution in as few as six weeks and one day. “This is the fastest, safest way to roll back unsustainable spending,” said Nick Dranias, President Of The Compact For America Educational Foundation, Inc., "There’s no risk of a runaway convention and we can get to the finish line of disciplined spending and less debt for our children a lot faster.” Former Alaska Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell, chair of the oversight commission organized under the Compact for a Balanced Budget, said the bill is under consideration in a number of other states: “Arizona is well known as a bellwether state in terms of public policy. The leadership shown by Governor Ducey and the legislative leadership in Arizona will help other states, such as Texas and Missouri, see that this is an important, necessary measure to avoid fiscal calamity.”

Arizona Dems Are Calling Out Sen Jeff Flack for introducing a bill that allows Internet Service Providers to track your every move online and sell that private information. “NOBODY, thinks this is a good idea except for Flake and the corporation that stand to make billions -- and yet, Flake's bill just passed Congress. You might be wondering why Jeff Flake would sell you out and make your browser history public. We were too...until we looked through Flake's campaign finance reports. The companies that will directly profit from Flake's move have contributed $27,995 to his campaign. This is a shameful -- and endangers the privacy of all of us. Luckily, there's something we can do. Flake is up for reelection in 2018, and you better believe voters are going to be hearing a lot about this vote,” reads a recent Dem e-mail.

LD20 State Committeewoman Marianne Ferrari: Maricopa County’s globalist Active Transportation Plan's real purpose IS to badly disrupt residential vehicle traffic. If N 31st Ave, is an example, driving will inevitably become a frustrating experience for everyone. My neighbors are already complaining. Yes, walking and biking are good. But they’re using them to encroach on existing vehicle lanes. Expect residential vehicle congestion, problematic parking, more injury accidents for pedestrians and bicycles, more punitive rules for drivers. Really, they want to get rid of cars, period. Despite Trump, this is global govt breathing down our necks. FYI: The UN wrote every Planning Dept rule now used in the US. Recommendation: Go to those meetings (see county website): Active-Transportation-Plan. Stop them from faking consensus! Be vocal in opposing what they’re doing. They WILL try to intimidate you. (See Rosa Koire’s videos about this scourge at  democratsagainstunagenda21 (Yup, even a Democrat is against it!)What is Active Transportation? Active transportation is movement powered by people, not machines. MCDOT's Active Transportation Plan (ATP) will focus on walking and bicycling, including connectivity between modes (including vehicles and transit) on County roadways. MCDOT's goal is to plan a transportation system that provides multiple alternatives for travel.  To do this, MCDOT will complete a comprehensive inventory of sidewalks, bike lanes, shared use paths and Americans with Disability Act (ADA) ramps. Efforts will also include the identification of gaps in the regional bicycle and pedestrian networks on MCDOT roadways. Public Outreach opportunities will be provided at two phases in the process (check the website for upcoming details). Once data is collected, sorted, and reviewed, a list of potential projects will be developed. This list will then be prioritized and a recommendation for programming will be developed. This plan will replace the 1999 Bicycle Transportation System Plan.

Arizona Policy President Cathi Herrod: Governor Doug Ducey’s signature on SB 1367 affirms life, regardless of age and circumstances of birth. The new law will ensure doctors make every effort to save the lives of babies born alive during an abortion attempt.I am grateful on behalf of the infants who will be saved because of this legislation. I also have gratitude for state leaders willing to fight for them. Join me in thanking the Governor, the bill’s sponsor, Sen. Steve Smith, and the many lawmakers who took a bold stand for life and voted to pass this important legislation. Let’s let our legislators and Governor know that we fully support their pro-life action at the Capitol. Click here to send them a quick thank you. I know they will appreciate hearing from you.

Former AZGOP Chairman Tom Morrissey: This is extremely sobering and scary.  I wonder when this happened but would venture a guess it was sometime during the past eight years. Pearson’s Libyan Ownership and Islam-Biased Textbooks. Posted by Arizona Freedom Alliance on March 31, 2017 at 8:05pm in Watching Education and Back to Watching Education Discussions

The Arizona Freedom Alliance (AFA) Team: Despite President Trump telling the House to have a vote on O'Ryancare, Speaker Ryan pulled the Bill and there will be no vote.  Many are blaming the Freedom Caucus for its failure to garner enough votes to pass. We say the wrong word is being used.  It should say it's to the CREDIT of the Freedom Caucus who stood together in spite of plenty of pressure and refused to cross over to vote for a bill that many of us who have read it and have watched the changes that have been made overnight and early this morning agree with. Freedom Caucus members insist that there will never be a 3 step phase (history supports that) and they put subsidies back in and Planned Parenthood is still in there making this unacceptable.  Some say that Ryan put this together just like the Democrats did: in the night, in the closet, behind closed doors, no amendments allowed.  Binary choice, said Ryan.  Not so fast, said Rep. Mark Meadows. Would it be better to have a bill that doesn't make that many changes from Obamacare but does make a few important ones? Or is it better to put it aside, move on to tax reform and come back to this next year and do it right/better?  A FULL REPEAL, not a modification, and start from scratch? Ryan is set to have a spin press conference at any minute. Turn on the TV, set the recorder. History to be made again.  Who will get the blame??

LD23 PC Boe James: I don't want to get into a continued online debate with Judy Rutkowski and/or LD 23 leadership, but...I am not sure how Judy can criticize my saying "snacks (hors d'oevres)" since the LD 23 Christmas party itself called it appetizers.  I quote from the LD23 Christmas flyer) "Assorted appetizers, soda, wine, & coffee ( and the company of your fellow Republicans )". Appetizers, hors d'oevres and snacks are all synonyms.. .Judy Rutkowski's version of last year's LD 23 Christmas party varies greatly from the stories I heard about it. I heard multiple complaints of people saying that the venue ran out of food and that they left without getting anything to eat.  If, in fact, some attendees did leave with extra food then something was very wrong with the organization of the food distribution or the complaints of no food were unfounded.  I tend to believe that some people did leave without getting any food believing that they were out of food.  I was not there, so I don't know for sure and can only rely on what I heard.  But I do know that it was advertised as appetizers and not dinner - which was one of the points I was trying to make.  It was not dinner, as Judy Rutkowski's comment might leave one to believe.

Editor’s Note: There were two separate invitation sent out for the event. The Nov 16, 2016 invitation reads: “Assorted appetizers, soda, wine, & coffee.” The revised Nov 17, 2016 invitation was changed to read “Bruschette, Penne Primavera, Meatballs, Penne Vodka, Chicken Marsala, Dessert, Soda, Wine, and Coffee,” according to the party hostess Shiree Verdone. Verdone also verifies that there was enough food left over that she invited some of the building staff in to help eat it.

Sen. John McCain Says He's "More Worried About This Country Than I've Been In My Entire Lifetime." We are seeing strains on the world order," the former presidential candidate said in an interview with CNN's David Axelrod. McCain was shocked earlier this year at candidate Donald Trump's assertion that the US lacked the moral standing to question Russia's human rights abuses. "To state that there's some moral equivalency between an imperfect nation -- that's the United States of America -- and Vladimir Putin is appalling," McCain said. full interview

AzCDL Legislative Update: We thank everyone who has contacted their Representatives about SB 1122 and SB 1344.  Over 5,000 messages have been sent urging support of these bills.  They still need your help.  If you have not sent your emails, you can find them at our Legislative Action Center. The status of legislation we are monitoring this session can be found on AzCDL's Bill Tracking page.  The following are pro-rights bills that are close to completing their journey through the legislature.
HB 2022, which would exempt from the definition of "unlawful discharge" the use of .22 caliber or smaller snake or rat shot, passed out of the Senate Committee of the Whole (COW) on March 28.  A Senate Third Read vote is needed for HB 2022 to progress.
HB 2216, which would make it unlawful to mandate "electronic firearm tracking technology," a component of "smart gun" technology, passed out of the Senate COW on March 30.  During the COW debate, anti-rights Senators
revealed their intention to mandate "smart gun" requirements in Arizona, which could outlaw the firearms you currently own.  HB 2216 still needs a Senate Third Read to progress.  We have prepared an email for you to send to your Senator urging them to support HB 2216.  Click here to send your email.
HB 2477, which would tighten asset forfeiture laws and require greater accountability by law enforcement, is scheduled for an April 3 Senate COW hearing.
SB 1122, which would prohibit the search of any federal or state databases as a requirement for transferring personal property (such as your firearms), is expected to be scheduled for a House COW hearing in the coming week.  If you have not yet told your Representatives to support SB 1122, there is still time.
Click here to send your email to your Representatives about SB 1122.
SB 1344, the AzCDL-requested bill that would clarify that state and local governments cannot regulate the possession of weapons by employees or contractors in or on property or vehicles owned by the employee or contractor, passed out of the House COW on March 28.  We expect it to receive a Third Read floor vote in the coming week.  If you have not yet told your Representatives to support SB 1344, there is still time.
Click here to send your email to your Representatives telling them to vote for SB 1344.

Arizona Department of Transportation maintenance crews remain busy with pavement repairs along northern Arizona highways following an active winter storm season. During the week of April 3-7, crews are scheduled to add a new layer of asphalt to smooth rough sections I-40 in the Parks area between Flagstaff and Williams. Asphalt overlays also will continue on State Route 89A in Oak Creek Canyon. Potholes in the pavement can pop up quickly when moisture seeps into and below asphalt. In northern Arizona, the situation is often exasperated by the combination of freezing overnight temperatures and daytime thawing. The Flagstaff area usually experiences more than 200 daily freeze-thaw cycles each year. Under the pounding of heavy traffic, the stressed pavement can break away. ADOT also has two projects scheduled later this year along I-40 between Flagstaff and Williams to add a new layer of pavement in both directions.

The World-Class Ben Avery Shooting Facility will host the Wed., April 19 “Shot Heard ‘Round the World Day” where recreational shooters can join together to symbolize the first shot fired in 1775 to mark the beginning of the American Revolution, while enjoying a fun shooting event. It will be 242 years to the day when the shot was fired in the pre-dawn light in Lexington, Mass., between the colonial militia and British army, starting the American Revolutionary War. The inaugural event, being promoted at public shooting ranges across the nation, also will provide an opportunity to increase participation and boost the economic benefits that shooting sports provide. As recreational shooters check in and visit BASF’s small bore range from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., they will be connected to recreational shooting mentor groups and shooting industry manufacturers and retailers inside the nearby indoor air gun and archery building. Whether or not a recreational shooter actively participates in hunting or angling, he or she contributes to the main source of funding for state wildlife conservation efforts through an excise tax placed on the purchase of shooting sports equipment and ammunition, as legislated by the Pittman-Robertson Act. Those funds also are spent on shooting sports projects, including the building of shooting ranges. See or visit

Congressman Paul Gosar: Why I opposed the American Health Care Act

Congressman Paul Gosar, Congressional Western Caucus Chairman: “It is a great thing when Congress and the Administration can work together to effect meaningful change. Revoking two more job-killing policies from the Obama Administration in the form of the federal coal lease moratorium and the unlawful Compensatory Mitigation Order is common sense. Reestablishing the Royalty Policy Committee will ensure the American people have a voice on federal policies that impact their livelihoods. During his confirmation hearings, Secretary Zinke reiterated his commitment to restoring trust with local communities. With today’s secretarial orders, he is doing precisely that,” said Chairman Gosar. “I was honored to stand alongside friends, fellow Westerners and Secretary Zinke as the Secretary acted quickly on several directives laid out in President Trump’s American Energy Independence Executive Order.” Text of the Secretarial Order 3349, American Energy Independence can be found here
