US Sen candidate Kelli Ward has named Jim Torina as her Finance Chairman in her 2018 race against incumbent Sen Jeff Flake. Ward served two terms as an Arizona senator from Mohave County. She is polling toe to toe with Flake in various polls. She held US Senator John McCain to 51 percent of the vote in 2016.

District 3 Board Of Supervisors Bill Gates recently took a tour of the Desert Tree Farm, viewing some of the new plant species that longtime Arizona farmer John Augustine has developed. The Desert Tree Farm, located in north Phoenix, was started by John’s father – a former activist and Realtor Mike Augustine - who was often seen meeting with city and state officials. Mike, a pilot and WWII veteran, frequently took to the skies to fly back to his Midwest roots in Fairfield, IA. The Augustine family was very influential in the development of the north Phoenix area aka as “the Greater Paradise Valley area.” Many of the late 60s thru 90s community improvement projects and progress sprouted roots in the Augustine family home near 40th Street and Shea. – ft

Pima County Chairman David Eppihimer: Once again the Democratic party's ideals and long-time recycled point of view and approach to solving problems is being presented to the voters.  In the last election cycle the incumbents on the City Council (all Democrats) patted themselves on the back for “a job well done" and asked voters to return them to office.  This time around Councilmen Fimbres and Kozachik are not only asking to be returned to office, they, and their Democrat cohorts on the Council, are asking Tucson voters to increase our sales tax by a half cent, ostensibly to provide for road construction & repair, and police & fire equipment. Doing a "good job" by a taxpayer’s definition does not mean neglecting the basic duties and obligations of those who not only have chosen to serve, but moreover have sworn an oath to provide certain essential services of government.  Are not serviceable roads, police and fire protection, garbage collection, a good park system and potable water some of the essential services for which the City of Tucson's budget should cover on an annual basis?  If the current City Council cannot manage its budget sufficient to provide these services, is it reasonable to go to the voters and ask them to make up the difference by levying additional taxes upon themselves?  Might not a better solution be to elect a Mayor and Council that can instead manage its own budget? The Republican Party believes in your tax dollars being prudently and efficiently spent on public safety, infrastructure and our parks. If the current leadership is incapable of prioritizing the budget, please consider twice before giving them more of your money to waste on their private agenda. Please consider voting to protect you, your family and your businesses - vote "no". Continue reading

Attorney General Mark Brnovich names Distinguished Service Award winners in recognition of National Crime Victims’ Right Week. They are:

· Advocacy & Direct Service Award: Chandler Police Department's Victim Services Unit

· Advocacy & Direct Service Award: Noemi Elizalde; Patient Advocate at Mariposa Community Health Center

· Service Coordination Award: Arizona Department of Corrections Office of Victim Services

· Innovative Practices Award: El Mirage Police Department Victim Assistance Unit

· Leadership Award: Randall Udelman; Principle/Founder of Arizona Crime Victim Rights Law Group

Last fiscal year, Arizona Attorney General victim advocates provided services to nearly 10,000 crime victims.  In fact, our Agency Leadership and Support Team is nominated for the Department of Justice's National Crime Victims' Rights Award. In 1990, Arizona voters approved the Victims’ Rights Amendments to the Arizona Constitution.  This was a landmark achievement that affords all victims of crime with the opportunity to have a participatory role in the criminal justice system and also extends certain protections of law to victims during their involvement with those processes.
Your rights as a crime victim,

Briefs remembers back in the early 90s when Steve Twist, who served as the right hand for then AZ Attorney General Bob Corbin, put his heart and soul into laying the ground work for crime victims recognition. Kudos to Twist for laying the ground work for where we are today.

While An Increasing Number of cities declare themselves safe zones for illegal immigrants, a sheriff in Arizona is bucking the trend by openly working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Border Patrol. “I’m not for sanctuary cities,” said Pinal County Sheriff Paul Lamb. “That’s pretty much it in a nutshell.” Pinal County, south of Phoenix, is the size of Connecticut. Its 450,000 residents are an ethnic mix – black, white, Hispanic and Native Americans. anti-sanctuary-city-arizona-county-bucks-national-trend

Larry Klayman: Ironically, around at the same time House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., was recusing himself from the panel's investigation over alleged Russian ties and collaboration with the Trump presidential campaign and transition team, as well as the illegal leaks and surveillance of the president himself, on behalf of Freedom Watch, I was filing a House Ethics Committee complaint against Nunes' counterpart, ranking minority member Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., for his not too subtle efforts to obstruct the chairman from doing his and the committee's job. The complaint can be found at Given that Nunes himself apparently is the subject of ethics complaints, lodged by leftist front groups, and that he used this as an excuse for his recusal, it is only logical that Schiff, a Hollywood leftist whose district even comprises West Hollywood, would now have to step down as well. But my complaint was not meant to be tit for tat, particularly since at the time I filed it I was not aware of the ethics charges against Nunes. Continue Reading...

Center for Arizona Policy President Cathi Herrod: Governor Doug Ducey signed a groundbreaking school choice bill, making Arizona the first state to put in place a universal Empowerment Scholarship Account program. Governor Ducey’s signature yesterday on SB 1431 opens up eligibility to all Arizona students in a district or charter school. Yesterday’s state House and Senate debates were long and often misleading, but a majority of lawmakers saw through the hyperbole and did what was best for Arizona families. Join me in thanking the governor, SB 1431 sponsor Sen. Debbie Lesko, Senate President Steve Yarbrough, House Speaker J.D. Mesnard, Rep. John Allen, and the many lawmakers who took a bold stand for students and voted to pass this important legislation. Let’s show our governor and legislators that we stand with them when they stand with Arizona families. Lawmakers supporting school choice have been subject to some of the most vicious attacks I’ve seen on any bill. They more than deserve our gratitude and support.Click here to send them a quick thank you. They will appreciate it.

Reps. Gosar, Pearce Cheer Decision to Withdraw Misguided Species Listing

Rep. Gosar Champions Emergency Citrus Disease Response Act

Reps. Gosar, Brooks, Buck and King Lead Effort in the House to Defund Sanctuary Cities

Congressman Paul Gosar: “As a fellow Westerner, I am elated to see Judge Gorsuch confirmed by the Senate to the Supreme Court. His fervent respect for the Constitution and the role of the Court, and unwavering dedication to interpreting the law as written, will ensure our nation is well served for years to come,” said Gosar. “Furthermore, as a Constitutionalist devoted to upholding the Rule of Law, Judge Gorsuch’s exceptional track record makes him uniquely qualified to fill the massive void left by the great late Justice Antonin Scalia. I look forward to his opinions issued from The Highest Court in the Land.”

Sen. Jeff Flake, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, voted to confirm Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. Judge Gorsuch was confirmed by a vote of 54 - 45. “I am proud to have voted today to confirm an accomplished, mainstream jurist with a judicial philosophy worthy of Justice Scalia’s seat,” said Flake. “Throughout this process Judge Gorsuch has proved himself to be a judge who understands and respects the law, and who understands that it is not the job of judges to legislate from the bench. This was an important vote, and I am glad we confirmed this good man.”

Congressman Andy Biggs’ Statement on Confirmation of Neil Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court

Sen. Jeff Flake, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today discussed President Trump's decision to launch missile strikes against a Syrian airbase on April 6, 2017. The strikes were in response to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's suspected chemical weapons attack earlier this week. "I think it was an appropriate response and I'm glad that he took action quickly," said Flake. "The destabilization that is happening in Syria affects not just Syria, it affects Europe and it affects us. I hope this changes the calculus for Assad. The President certainly has [constitutional] authority to take a strike like this given the situation and the threats to our own national security." Full interview, here.

McCain on Syria Airstrikes: 'This Beginning Had to Happen'

McCain Calls for Renewed Support for Free Syrian Army, Establishment of No-Fly Zones

Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) on military strikes in Syria: “We salute the skill and professionalism of the U.S. Armed Forces who carried out tonight’s strikes in Syria. Acting on the orders of their commander-in-chief, they have sent an important message the United States will no longer stand idly by as Assad, aided and abetted by Putin’s Russia, slaughters innocent Syrians with chemical weapons and barrel bombs. Unlike the previous administration, President Trump confronted a pivotal moment in Syria and took action. For that, he deserves the support of the American people. Building on tonight’s credible first step, we must finally learn the lessons of history and ensure that tactical success leads to strategic progress. That means following through with a new, comprehensive strategy in coordination with our allies and partners to end the conflict in Syria. The first measure in such a strategy must be to take Assad’s air force—which is responsible not just for the latest chemical weapons attack, but countless atrocities against the Syrian people—completely out of the fight. We must also bolster support for the vetted Syrian opposition and establish safe zones to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis. As we do, we can and must continue the campaign to achieve ISIS’s lasting defeat.”

Maricopa County Board of Supervisors Bill Gates: As 2017 flies by (can you believe it’s already April?), let’s take a moment to reflect on the great things that have happened in Maricopa County so far this year. Phoenix witnessed yet another last second championship game while hosting its first NCAA Final Four last weekend. Downtown Phoenix and Margaret T. Hance Park were filled with energy while hosting Fan Fest and the numerous big name musical acts. The Valley continues to be an amazing host to major championship events, all of which seem to be some of the most exciting championships of our time. It was recently reported that Maricopa County added more residents in 2016 than any other county in the country. People are coming to our county because of our great climate, friendly residents, low taxes and business friendly environment.  On April 1st, the Prickly Pedal Mountain Bike Race was held and was big success for a second year in a row. I want to thank all of you who came out to support the race by participating, volunteering, or cheering on our riders. I look forward to many more successful years of racing on the Maricopa Trail.
