4-9-17 Briefs

Republican Briefs

Editor Frosty Taylor  repcomm@cox.net       Web Master John Strasser

AZ Republican National Committeeman Bruce Ash: Hoping this email is one of many 80th birthday greetings to our friend and constant ally—Frosty Taylor!! Here’s wishing you a sweet year filled with happiness, good health and surrounded by those who love you.

Thank’s To All of You for the beautiful 80th birthday messages, flowers, cards, gifts and invitations to lunch that have been delivered over the past several days.  Ash’s message and a card/personal message from former Gov Jane Brewer were the first to come in. – ft.

LD21 Sen Debbie Lesko’s ESA School choice legislation made Wall Street Journal last week.

Chris Campbell attended the Young Republican National Federation Spring meeting in Boston last week.

Gila County Republican Committee Chairman Gary Morris reports that he and Andy McKinney, President of the Rim Country Republican Club, are continuing their monthly one-hour radio show on Payson radio 1420 AM. During last year’s campaign season they were on the radio weekly talking about Republican issues and interviewing a large number of Republican candidates. He believes the radio show helped achieve some historic election results in November. Following the election they are now doing a monthly one-hour show at 9am, the second Monday. Morris believes radio talk show is an efficient way to communicate successes of the Trump Administration and the Republican Congress and suggests other chairman seek out radio time with their local radio stations.

The Pima County GOP “Border Security Panel Luncheon”, featuring Pima County Sheriff Napier, Pinal County Sheriff Lamb and Cochise County Sheriff Dannels, is scheduled at 11:30 am., Sat., May 20 at the Mountain Oyster Club, 6400 E ElDoprado Circle in Tucson. $32 per person or $60 per couple (includes lunch). Tickets on at www.PIMAGOP.org

Activist Annette Shuford: “I want to put war mongerers John McCain and Lindsey Graham on the front lines in Syria. As decoy targets. To draw enemy fire away from US troops...”

LD21 Senate Judy Musgrove Burges: “Thank you Seeing Red Arizona for much of the following article. "The Arizona Republic made much ado of the fact that its endorsement of Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential race was an aberration. After all, it claims to be a conservative newspaper. Still it said “Hillary Clinton was the only choice to move America ahead” despite her “flaws.”  “Flaws?” The newspaper has obviously mastered the art of understatement. Arizonans, too smart to believe such absurdities, voted for Donald Trump --- who won the state by 91,234 votes, carrying 11 of the 15 counties. Trump took all 11 electoral votes. On his powerful coattails, Republicans increased their force in state legislatures across the country, controlling both chambers in 32 states, leaving Democrats at their lowest level since the Civil War. The GOP increased its majority of governorships. The U.S. House and Senate are both majority Republican." If Laurie Roberts made a difference in anyone's mind, I might care what trash she espoused in her gossip column. She has forgotten the trade of real journalism. Such a sad day that this once great paper is fast sinking into history. Down, down, down into a forgotten abyss printing articles that rank with The Globe or Enquirer. No wonder Seeing Red Arizona writes about the Arizona Republic being on life support and refusing to take their meds.

AFP AZ Director Tom Jenney: The Arizona chapter of Americans for Prosperity wants to express its gratitude to all of the people who made this week's legislative victory possible, creating universal eligibility for Arizona's system of Empowerment Scholarship Accounts (ESAs).  ESA expansion in Arizona was the most important school choice battle in the country in 2017 (more about the reform HERE), giving families from all backgrounds greater access to the educational resources that work best for them, introducing more competition into Arizona's education marketplace, and putting more pressure on our underperforming district schools to improve. Many people made contributed to the victory:
-- First, our AFP-Arizona staff and volunteers who went door canvassing with us or made phonebank calls for ESA expansion, including: Aaron, Alex, Bill, Brian, Catherine, Eileen, Fernando, Gonzo, Jacob, Jacek and his crew, Jaimie, Jason, Jennifer, Kasey, Kim, Leslie, Linda, Mallory, the Matts, Mike, Paul, Seth, Stephen and Swannee. (My apologies for omitting any other superstars!)
-- Second, all of YOU activists out there who made calls or sent emails in response to our alerts. Your actions helped to build and secure support for the passage of the reform before and during a very contentious legislative session.
-- Third, all the partners in our coalition, including the good people at the American Federation for Children, the Arizona Catholic Conference, the Arizona Free Enterprise Club, the Cato Institute, the Center for Arizona Policy, the Foundation for Excellence in Education, the Goldwater Institute and the Institute for Justice.  (Again, my apologies for omissions!)
-- Finally, and crucially, the brave elected officials who stood up for Arizona children in the face of brutal pressure by the vested interests (mainly, teacher union activists and school district cronies): Governor
Doug Ducey, Senate President Steve Yarbrough, House Speaker J.D. Mesnard, bill sponsors Senator Debbie Lesko and Representative John Allen, and the 16 Senators and 31 Representatives who voted Yes in the third read votes on Thursday.  ESA battle HERE.    Apply for an Empowerment Scholarship Account HERE. Supervisor Bill Gates mentioned the Margaret T Hance Park in a recent newsletter – which brought back a lot of pleasant memories of former Mayor Margaret Hance (R) during the 70s. Briefs still gets a tickle when remembering being seated next to Mayor Margie one evening, when she nudged me with her elbow and pointed to her shoes… she was wearing one black shoe and one white shoe. We laughed about it for many years. - ft
