6-22-17 Briefs

Republican Briefs

La Paz County Chairman Russell Sias: – I can think of but one reason why contact information has steadfastly been refused to be shared amongst committee members. The purpose has to be is to disallow them from accomplishing anything meaningful. The blatant excuse was deceptively, controllingly, silly. Maybe I am wrong. Do you feel that putting yourself in the pubic eye - as you have done by being asked to serve on one of these committee’s  have an expectation of privacy from other committee members? Are any of you concerned about being known by other committee members? IF you do as Kathie Petsas suggested, then I must ask: Why did you accept an assignment to the committee in the first place? What  can be the purpose of a committee that cannot exchange ideas amongst themselves? I for one, have NO problem with any committee member knowing who I am, or how to contact me. For the record, I am Russell Sias, county chairman, executive committee member, and bylaws committee member. I can be reached at We need to communicate with one another – whether Ms. Petsas wants us to or not. Why would she not, I keep asking myself! Are you willing to ask yourself the same question? You should, if you are not  asking these same questions! Who knows, maybe I am wrong, and we are not supposed to discuss anything between ourselves. Just leave the party in the hands of those who so obviously want to control. But, I thought it was a party of the people, not a party of sheep. Maybe I am wrong about this as well. Am I? That depends on YOU. I would also ask, Chairman Lines, why are you allowing this nonsense?

Karen M MacKean - Navajo County Republican Committee First Vice Chairman: On Saturday, June 17 at the 2nd AZGOP Executive Committeemen meeting in Flagstaff, Az, I had a very strange exchange with Kim Owens, who was officiating at the meeting, signing in committeemen and doing other unknown various duties… It more than concerned me that in her un-official capacity, she felt it was perfectly alright to say to those of us requesting further information from the Executive board on the required audit and Secretary Mercer’s requests for past records that it was a “Witch-hunt.” But she couldn’t have a civil conversation with me when I approached her to say we were not on a witch hunt, that in fact, we were all very concerned & aware that the by-laws and state statute’s state emphatically that an audit shall be done upon the new boards takeover in January and all previous records be passed on to the newly elected board members, including the Treasurer and Secretary.  Chairman Lines was/is in breach of the by-laws and State Statutes. I was shocked by her demeanor and emphatic refusal to listen to a thing I was saying… Editor’s Note” See the rest of MacKean’s statement at  The Villain in the AZGOP Armegeddon Drama?

Rose Sperry - AZGOP Executive Committee CD-4 Member at Large: I left the June 17 Executive Committee (ExComm) meeting baffled and stunned at what I believe to be hypocrisy to our claim of supporting free speech and abiding by the bylaws that are supposed to govern this committee. During the meeting, I moved that “the bylaws committee chairman provide all bylaws committee members a printed list of the members of the bylaws committee including phone numbers and email address’s by Tuesday, June 20”. Right off the starting gate, I thought I was facing a hostile acting chairman, Al Gage, who immediately said my motion was out of order because we couldn’t require anyone to give out this information WITHOUT THEIR CONSENT. Was he anticipating this question? In my opinion, he was. With all due respect to Mr. Gage, I must say that HE was in error. Why was he in error you might ask? Because at our executive meeting in Yuma, AZGOP leadership gave us all packets of information including a list of the names, addresses and phone numbers of all the executive committee members, myself included! In the past, I’ve received similar lists at Chairman Graham's meetings. “Mr. Gage, I never gave my permission to have my name printed on these lists. I was never even asked. Which members of the committee gave you the authority to change precedent?” Later, a motion was made to strike, from the minutes, 3rd Vice Chairman Christopher Campbell's comments, at the Yuma ExComm meeting, regarding his concern about voting to approve a budget that was not clear since the committee hadn’t received a copy of the budget nor a formal presentation given as had been the case in previous years. I was one of only two or three “nay” votes, and the motion conveniently passed. Editor’s Note: See complete statement at My Take On The Flagstaff ExComm Meeting

MCRC Member-at-Large Wes Harris:  A number of concerned citizens showed up at the Phoenix City Council meeting yesterday which forced the Council to put constraints on mortgaging our children's future by elongating the contribution to the unfunded Public Safety pensions from 20 years to (as a result or our attendance) 25 years plus the promise to revisit the issue in early fall after other alternatives have been totally researched.  So it was a qualified win for We the People.  My count was a mere dozen concerned citizens that believed in the principle that being able to affect anything in our Government, first you have to show up!  For the rest of you who could not take the time to try and control the most impactful government on your individual and family's lives, shame on you. In the future, please consider that a call to action is not an empty call for support, it is a call for you to exercize your responsibilities as a citizen of this Republic and great nation...if you want to keep it great.  Illinois in on the brink because they did what our council did debt with more debt.  If we don't want to be another Detroit (which with higher real estate taxes, higher city fees, higher city overhead, pensions for life with no end, etc. etc.) it is up to us to stand up and force this government that is supposed to be by the people and for the people...away from being a city that is by the City Employee and for the City Employee. Harris is a PC and State Committeeman.

LD23 PC Gina Swoboda: Looks like a reporter was at our May LD23 meeting. According to this, if you punch in someone else's SS info, the computer gives you a ballot with NO ID check by the computer or a poll worker. How does that conform to our voter ID law? It doesn't. county-recorder-adrian-fontes-changes-voting-system-fall

RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel: "In Georgia, we had a robust ground game. We had two million voter contacts. We were knocking doors every day. We knew our voter universe, and we are going to continue to do that. We are already building an infrastructure in these states where we think we can pick up Senate seats in 2018, and we are ready to compete in House seats across the country. What the media needs to recognize is that Donald Trump's message is resonating. When he is saying, 'we need to improve our economy and add jobs and wages and fix the health care system that is falling apart and crumbling every day.' That is what's resonating with voters. They are sending Republicans to Washington to help the president, and they're going to continue to do that as they see him working on behalf of the American people. Democrats have no vision. Obstruction and resistance is not a vision and it's lost for them these last four elections."

Congressman Biggs' Opening Statement at Hearing to Examine Advances in Environmental Technologies

Congresswoman Martha McSally and Sen John McCain yesterday introduced bipartisan legislation to help facilitate restoration projects on public lands, such as Saguaro National Park. The 21st Century Conservation Service Corps Act will enable federal agencies, like the National Park Service (NPS), to partner with national service corps organizations in order to complete projects faster and more efficiently, saving taxpayer dollars. “Arizona’s breathtaking scenic scopes are renown throughout the country and the world— but our state also has one of the largest backlogs in park maintenance projects,” said McSally. “This backlog is restricting access for Arizonans and tourists at our parks and public areas. This isn’t a problem that money alone can fix, we need to think innovatively and pragmatically to address this growing problem. My bipartisan bill leverages existing resources in a smarter way to get these projects moving. This would be a win for veterans, youth, local communities, and our national parks.” There is $580.2 million in delayed or deferred restoration projects throughout Arizona, and National Parks in Congressional District 2 are hampered because of it. Maintenance projects requiring attention at Saguaro National Park amount to approximately $12.9 million, while Chiricahua National Monument in Cochise County faces roughly $10.3 million in needed restoration projects.

US Sens John McCain and Jeff Flake yesterday cosponsored the Safeguard Tribal Objects of Patrimony Act (STOP Act), legislation introduced by Sen Martin Heinrich (D-NM) that would prohibit the exportation of sacred Native American artifacts and increase penalties for stealing and illegally trafficking tribal cultural patrimony. This legislation was cosponsored by a bipartisan group of senators including Senators Tom Udall (D-NM), Brian Schatz (D-HI), Steve Daines (R-MT), Jon Tester (D-MT) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK). “Many of the cultural artifacts that this bill would protect have a special, sacred connection to Native American people, as well as their history and heritage,” said McCain.

US Sen John McCain: “I welcome the Treasury Department’s action to strengthen sanctions against Vladimir Putin’s Russia by designating 38 individuals and entities, including Russian government officials and Russian-backed separatists in Ukraine. The United States must continue to increase pressure on Russia until it is compelled to withdraw its forces from Ukraine, including the Crimean peninsula; ceases its destabilizing support for proxy forces inside Ukraine; and honors the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

US Sens John McCain , Jerry Moran (R-KS), Thom Tillis (R-NC) and Dean Heller (R-NV) sent a letter to Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary David Shulkin yesterday regarding reports that the VA will not have enough funds to operate the Veterans Choice Program through the current fiscal year. Earlier this year, the VA assured Congress that it would have about $1.1 billion left to operate the Veterans Choice Program when it was originally set to expire by law on August 7. As a result, the House and Senate worked to pass and the president signed into law legislation that eliminated the sunset date on the program and allowed the VA to use the remaining funds to operate it without disruption. However, the VA recently realized that the veteran use and utilization rate for the Veterans Choice Program was much higher than anticipated and that the VA would no longer have enough funds to operate the program through the current fiscal year.‎
