12-5-17 Briefs

Arizona’s Republican National Committeewoman Lori Klein Corbin is being considered as the replacement to fill LD1 State Committeeman Sue Jordan’s vacancy. Jordan passed away November 13. Before she passed away Jordan agreed that Lori and Bob Corbin should be the first picks to fill any vacancies, according to a memo LD1 Chairman Cathy Schwanke recently distributed to her PCs. Klein-Corbin meets all qualifications. She is a PC residing in LD1, Maricopa County and has LD1 Schwanke’s approval. Maricopa County Chairman Chris Herring approved Klein-Corbin when LD1 submitted her named for a state committeemen position a few months ago. LD1 PCs who s upport approving her appointment should contact Schwanke at Schwanke message says many PCs added their names to the support list” at their last meeting. Schwanke’s message says  that AZGOP Chairman Jonathan Lines has already choses non-elected PCs to fill state committeeman vacancies in Yavapai County. (Editor’s Note: Yavapai County Chairman Mark Sensmeier says, “ALL replacement State Committee appointments that Jonathan Lines has made for Yavapai County (including the 3 that were not my initial recommendations, a situation which has now been remedied) were elected PC's. He has not appointed any non-elected PC's to any State Committee slots for Yavapai County. - ft)

The AZGOP Bylaws regarding state committeeman vacancies: Article II— MEMBERSHIP   C. Filling of Vacancies: The state chairman shall appoint a replacement for a vacancy in the office of state committeeman with the advice and consent of the county chairman of the county in which the vacancy occurred. In counties with populations of 500,000 or more persons, such appointment shall also require the advice and consent of the district chairman of the district in which the vacancy occurred and shall be filled by a person who resides in that district.

During the Nov 27 LD1 meeting, Connie Stanfield was unanimously elected to fill Jordan’s LD1 secretarial position.

Editor’s Note: Please keep opinion pieces to 400 words.

Jim VanceNavajo County Republican Chairman Jim Vance: Change is happening at the Navajo County Republican Committee.  It was no secret that the atmosphere at committee meetings had become toxic under the prior leadership and change was required. In November, in accordance with the by-laws, ¾ of the elected PC’s met, and voted unanimously to remove from office the executive committee of the NCRC, including Steven Slaton as Chairman, Karen MacKean as 1st VC, and Paul Corathers as 2nd VC.  The same majority also unanimously voted in a new executive committee as follows:  Jim Vance as Chairman, Kelli Hunt as 1st VC, and Vicki Baldwin as 2nd VC.  The PC’s also voted to rescind the bylaws that had been amended improperly earlier this year and which were in conflict with the state GOP bylaws.  These votes were properly recorded, notarized and then sent to key people and lawyers at the AZGOP for verification. Upon receipt of the minutes and confirmation from the AZGOP General Counsel, Chairman Jonathan Lines issued a statement recognizing the new NCRC leadership. The newly led NCRC is committed to growing its membership and growing the Republican party in Navajo County. We have a lot of work to do, locally, statewide, and nationally, and the county committee is where this work starts.  When the environment in the committee is welcoming, positive, and supportive there is no limit to the ways in which we can help Make America Great Again. If you want to get involved in Navajo County, please contact Katy Udall at: You will see a shift to a positive attitude and support of those who deserve it. Editor’s Note: The Navajo County Republicans Committee (NCRC) has two individuals claiming to be the NCRC chairman – Kevin Slaton, who has been the chairman for the past year and Jim Vance, who was elected when a group of PCs called a meeting in November and removed Slaton’s and his officers from office. Slaton has been in contact with Attorney General Mark Brnovich’s office regarding what Slaton refers to as an “illegal” meeting called by Vance, whom Slaton claims is a Sen. Sylvia Allen’s follower. See 12-1-17 Briefs In the meantime, AZGOP Chairman Lines has declared Vance the newly seated NCRC Chair per Vance’s letter above - ft

Congressman Andy Biggs: Tonight, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Motion to Go to Conference on H.R. 1. Congressman Biggs voted in favor of the motion and issued the following statement: “We are on the verge of historic tax reform for countless Americans, and I hope that our conference committee will strengthen our bill. I applaud my colleagues for their commitment to these transformational policies, and I look forward to seeing the final product.”

Frank RiggsSupt of Public Instruction Candidate Frank Riggs: For the record, I served five years as an elected member of a public school district governing board, including two years as the board president.  The legislation I pursued as Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Youth & Families  (now the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary & Secondary Education) primarily impacted public district schools like the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 1998 & the Perkins Vocational-Technical Education Act that same year.  Please don't typecast me as a charter schools proponent to the neglect of traditional district schools, which the great majority of AZ's 1.1 M schoolchildren attend.

Grassroots Republicans are urged to sign Archie Dicksion’s Proxy Petition To Curb Proxy Abuse Http://Bit.Ly/2rzg2w8. When signing the petition, you have two choices, total ban or limit to two per person. There has been great concern over the use of proxies the past five or years or more to control elections at both the AZGOP and Maricopa County Republican Mandatory meeting held every January. Complaints have been voiced for several years of “Bell Cows” carrying up to 40 proxies for PC who rarely, if ever attend meetings. Opponents of the excessive use of proxies say the misuse and abuse of proxies has resulted in the cleansing of conservative grassroots Republicans from leadership roles a at the district, county and state level by RINOs or McCainites.

Sauce For The Goose is sauce for the gander in the eyes of eight male legislators who added their support yesterday to four female legislators who wrote a letter to Speaker Javan Mesnard a few days requesting the Rep Michelle Ugenti-Rita be removed as chair of the House Means Committee and Rep Rebecca Rios to be removed as the minority leader while under investigation for alleged misbehavior. Rep Don Shooter was removed as chair of the Appropriations Committee when allegations of sexual harassment were leveled at him several weeks ago. Reps Rusty Bowers, Anthony Kern, Darin Mitchell, Kevin Payne, Drew John, Mark Finchem, Noel Campbell and Travis Grantham signed the letter yesterday. Rep Regina Cobb, Jill Norgaard, Becky Nutt and Maria Syms were the original signers of the letter earlier in the week.

Laddie Shane, who has been the director of constituent engagement and appointments for Gov Doug Ducey, has teamed up with Kelsey Lundy and Sean Noble in a partnership at Compass Strategies. Shane, an activist since high school, has also served as a state wide field director the Attorney General Mark Brnovich and the Yes on Prop 123 campaign in 2016.

Floating Around The Internet: The Supreme Court has ruled that there cannot be a Nativity Scene on Capitol Hill this Christmas season. This isn't for any religious reason. They simply have not been able to find Three Wise Men in the Nation's Capital. A search for a Virgin also continues. There was no problem, however, finding enough asses to fill the stable.

As Protestors Trespassed into Sen John McCain’s Phoenix office yesterday Briefs felt sorry for McCain’s staff. No employee should have to face a gang of shouting protestors, particularly when they aren’t even legal citizens of this country. Would they get by with that in the country’s they left? I think not. It’s one thing to stand outside a politician’s office and scream your head off, but to enter the facility and scream/shout at the front office staff is totaling out of line. It was Phoenix’s Finest to the rescue; police officers cuffed several protestors for trespassing. – ft
