NOTES FROM READERS
Opinions expressed by readers are not necessarily those of the Briefs. Commentary running over 400 words is subject to editing. Briefs posts candidate announcements, but does not endorse candidates, nor do we post endorsement statements. - ft.
Jim Alberts: Karen Johnson's commentary on John McCain is the best ever! The only thing left out is: why did McCain seal the records from the POWs left behind investigation? Is there anyone in the Republican Party in Arizona who can get McCain to release this information ? Trump was correct McCain is not a hero!
Retired Border Patrolman Chairman Zack Taylor: Frosty, between this Police Chief and the Maricopa County Sheriff the Phoenix Metropolitan Area is on a slippery slope that will turn it into a Chicago situation eventually. This whole idea about affirmative action and political correctness fails miserably when it encounters reality. See Phoenix-Police-Chief-Invents-Credible-Threats-Make-Detective-Personal-Chauffeur-Guard
Americans for Prosperity – AZ Grassroots Director Leslie White: You are so appreciated for all that you do for Arizona! You keep us all informed! Thank YOU!
Water Resources Engineer Mark Lewis: McCain, Allies Prepare For The Worst -- Close friends of Sen. John McCain have told the White House that the Arizona Republican wants Vice President Mike Pence to attend his funeral at Washington's National Cathedral, but not the President. "And some of his associates, though not his family, have started to quietly put out word that they want a 'McCain person' eventually appointed to fill his Senate seat, a roster that includes his wife, Cindy," The New York Times' Jonathan Martin reports. McCain, who has been in Arizona for months recovering from cancer treatment, is still fighting. "But his health has become a matter of immediate political interest," Martin writes. "Mr. McCain's future may determine whether Republicans retain their single-seat Senate majority: Should the senator die or resign before the end of May, there will most likely be a special election for the seat this fall. But under Arizona law, if he remains in office into June, there will probably not be an election for the seat until 2020, which Republicans would prefer given Democratic enthusiasm this year." Activist Archie Dicksion: In 1992 the voters of Arizona passed Proposition 107 with 74% of the voters voting in favor of the measure. And what was that measure? It provided for what we refer to in Arizona as TERM LIMITS. It is clear that the voters wanted to eliminate career politicians in the State of Arizona. As is usual with much legislation, initiatives and referendums, the language of the Proposition was carefully drafted to achieve its intended result. The relevant provisions as it relates to our state legislators is as follows:
“ - - -No state Senator shall serve more than four consecutive terms in that office nor shall any state Representative serve more than four consecutive terms in that office. This limitation on the number of terms of consecutive service shall apply to terms of office beginning on or after January 1, 1993. No Legislator after serving the maximum number of terms which shall include any part of a term served may serve in the same office until he has been out of office no less than one full term.”
What the provision left open was that a person serving in one branch could after serving four full terms immediately seek office in the other house with no intervening time limit. Thus today, we have people who have served a full term limit in one branch , eight years, then ran for election in the other branch and now having served eight years are going to see re-election to the other branch of the legislature. This could continue indefinitely until members serving in the state legislature have more time than John McCain in congress.
That is simply not what the voters intended by approving Prop. 107 in 1992. They wanted to eliminate professional politicians. Perhaps it is time for a new initiative to eliminate this loophole. Will we lose some good legislators? Yes, but hopefully we will also get some talented new legislators with fresh ideas.
LD23 PC Chris Brant: Like many of my fellow conservative Republicans, with whom I interact, we are sick and tired of Dr Ward’s continuous spiteful, snide comments. She has already dissed a large percentage of the Arizona Republican electorate just because we support the go-getter Martha McSally. Dr Ward’s last campaign against a floored candidate wasn’t successful probably because she went dirty early. She hasn’t stopped campaigning since that failed attempt. She speaks well to groups (except for her false accusations about her opponents) but, unfortunately, individually she is not very personable. In 5-8-18-Briefs Ward says she would, “support a military so strong that no one will dare challenge us”. After a career in the Royal Marines and then in sales I learned that mean spirited individuals have a great disadvantage in getting things done. “McSpender” as Ward pathetically calls her opponent has the ear of the President and convinced him to save the A10 Warthog. US and allied ground troops don’t just call that talk - we call it action. Thank you Congresswoman! McSally obviously didn’t like the bloated spending bill that she and the President reluctantly supported but it had essential funds for the military. This petty talk about Ward alone would support the President. The whole House Republican delegation has supported Donald Trump and no one more than Martha McSally. The President calls the former combat pilot, “The Real Deal!” Like other local and national Republicans, I will work on her campaign if Kelli Ward wins the primary, I just hope that she doesn’t win because she is not the best candidate to beat Sinema. I am not comparing Dr Ward with the likes of Missouri’s Aikin, Alabama’s Moore or Nevada’s Angle but if we had picked better US Senatorial candidates we could have passed much more of the President’s agenda!
Ayshia Connors. I Am The Director Of Communications And External Affairs With The State Party. Something has come to my attention that I wanted to address. Over the last two days, Briefs has contained some inaccuracies and I was hoping you could correct the record. On Monday, it was stated that ExCom reports are not made available or open to the public. Indeed, Treasurer Bob Lettieri made his report available to all members, asked the Assistant Secretary to include his report in the minutes, and further informed the Committee that future fines stemming from violations in 2013-2014 would be forthcoming. I am attaching that report for your review. In 5-9-18-briefs, one of your readers erroneously stated that the “nobody can seem to get details about the fine from party leadership.” In fact, at the January 27 mandatory meeting, Treasurer Bob Lettieri gave a detailed report, and included a specific mention of the fine. He further asked any State Committee members with questions to contact him directly with any questions. The AZGOP and Chairman Lines prides ourselves on being transparent and open with the Committee members, as we have been with regards to the FEC fine. Editor’s Note: Thank you Ayshia. Briefs requested information from Chairman Jonathan Lines and Executive Director Matt Kennedy over three weeks ago in behalf of PCs claiming they knew nothing of the FEC fines until Yellow Sheet broke the story on April 11. 4-13-18 Briefs and 5-8-18-briefs Apparently Treasurer Bob Lettieri’s reports aren’t filtering back to PCs via the ExCom meeting attendees. Joe Neglia provided links 5-9-18-briefs where interested PCs can find the FEC fine documents they’ve been seeking. - ft

Activist Jeff Greenspan: With respect to John McCain, I read on Drudge yesterday about how John McCain said he delivered the "dossier" to Comey. I was struck by the unanimity of opinion in the comments from people around the country and world in their disdain for the choice John McCain made to involve himself in the matter. When the story initially broke, it was revealed that David Kramer, an associate at the McCain Institute, met with Christopher Steele, who was working with Russians to develop the dossier in London in December, 2016. The comment that struck me the most was an observation by a reader who said it was a very poor decision of McCain's at the end of his career and his life to choose to be involved in something that undermined our elected present and, at the same time, cost the America tens of millions of dollars, as the hourly billings by private lawyer Robert Muller and the swarm of private lawyers he has hired rapidly approaches 100 million utterly wasted taxpayer dollars. I also ran across an article in the The Stars and Stripes newspaper, a publication of the US Defense Department, from Friday, June 6, 1969, page 27, entitled: "Tape has [Admiral] McCain's son [John] praising Red Doctors". The article notes that McCain participated in a series of taped broadcasts from Hanoi to soldiers, monitored in Saigon, praising the North Vietnamese. Was that a result of torture or a threat thereof? Some may say so. Others who were present with McCain in the Hanoi prison said it was not, according to witnesses referred to in former AZ Senator Karen Johnson's 5-9-18-briefs open letter to Laura Ingraham.
Cindy Perrin: I didn't understand why Sheriff Joe was running for Senate, so I took the time to go to his office and find out. Sheriff Joe's intention is to go to Washington to support President Trump's agenda and policies. Sheriff Joe is only going to Washington for one term and during that term he will be giving 100% of his attention to the concerns of Arizona. He will not be running for a second term so his complete focus will be on working for Arizona and NOT on fundraising and campaigning for a second term. Sheriff Joe's plan for the people of Arizona is to represent them as a Junior Senator for which Washington has never seen the likes of before. Sheriff Joe has a reputation for never backing down for what he truly believes in. Sheriff Joe is the only Senate candidate that has been a President Trump supporter since the very first day that Donald Trump announced his campaign for Presidency! Sheriff Joe has a plan for what he intends to accomplish during his term. https://www.sheriffjoeforamerica.com/issues/ Sheriff Joe has experience and a proven track record that no other candidate has; US Army Korean War veteran, Police Officer, US Drug Enforcement Official, US Diplomat Attache, and Sheriff of Maricopa County for 24 years! I'm convinced that Sheriff Joe is going to be the winner of this race once people take the time to sit and listen to what he has to say. This man dedicated his entire life to serve the people and had the support of most of us reading this. He was there for us when we needed him, and now we have to take a good look in the mirror and ask ourselves "doesn't he deserve our support now?" We all know that Sheriff Joe is 85 years old, but I can honestly tell you that after spending six hours in his office with all the goings-on that was happening, the media, the unannounced visitors like myself, his campaign workers, and all the phones ringing, I left his office completely exhausted while he was running off to yet another meeting as if he just was starting his day! Please visit Sheriff Joe's website www.SheriffJoeForAmerica.comConsider making a donation to support Sheriff Joe for Senate. Thank you for taking the time to read my post! GOD Bless America!
Arizona Town Crier Jim Ehl: Hitler is not to be totally blamed for WWII and all the other things that happened! What can one man do??? It is the following created by that person and the lack of opposition from the other side that allows it!!! The same applies to Stalin, Pol Pot, and others. That applies to the ‘spineless’ AZGOP membership!! That is well noted in the 5-9-18-briefs. Of note is an article by Karen Johnson, and an article from the Arizona Freedom Alliance titled, The Misadventures of the AZGOP. What is to be gleaned from reading these articles? The poorest party leadership in Arizona that one can imagine!!! Who can blame Graham or Lines for anything that happened?? Graham and Lines were/are were just being Graham and Lines, doing just what Graham and Lines wanted to do. All the while the County chairmen and state committeemen sit on their back sides and do nothing!! Just a case in point and there are many, McCain was censored in an official meeting by the state committeemen and the AZGOP leadership (all chairs) did nothing to back that censorship and McCain was re-elected!! Then there is the money question. And the bylaws flap. And on and on! And we see all the talking heads shout, “and tomorrow they “- they being the sheep, will come home, wagging their tails behind them. Behind them?? Did we think that would wag their tails in front of them?
A talking head proclaimed that we have got to wait until next statutory meeting and elect a new state chair who would support changes to the bylaws. BS!!!! This has been going on for years and years and getting worse with the control of RINOs etc.! Re-Read 5-9-18-briefs. McCain is just being McCain. Crashed aircraft, fires on carriers POW, etc., so what? And we have past leaders who, supposedly support Trump and McCain, who despises Trump . Now which is it?? Is that any leadership? With ‘spineless’ County Chairs, apathetic state committeemen, and lack of leadership, what the h**l is to be expected??? The easy way out is to just re-register as an Independent. It’s your state. With some elected dropping out of office; others refusing to run for office again, representatives and senators voting with the other party, and AZGOP party leadership as it is, what is our future?
Teresa Mendoza of Mesa: First of all, thank you as always Frosty. As a new Republican, reading Briefs has become part of my morning routine! You do an amazing job. This morning though my jaw dropped at the nastiness of one of the opinion pieces. I felt compelled to write a response. My letter is attached to this email. Keep up the awesome work! You provide an amazing service. Sad at the level of nastiness when someone's candidate doesn't get the support they thing they should get.
Teresa Mendoza responds to LD23 PC Van Berry. I am new to the Republican Party and am disappointed at the nastiness of his opinion 5-9-18-briefs attacking Kelli Ward supporters in order to elevate Joe Arpaio. That seems to be a theme with a few vocal Arpaio supporters online. I am sure that if Arpaio knew how nasty he is being represented, he would not be okay with it since he is a sweet man. Perhaps Arpaio supporters should pay attention to what the majority are saying about Arpaio being in the race and that is that Joe shouldn’t be running. I personally like Joe Arpaio and I have a right as a voter to voice my opinion on why he isn’t the best candidate. Call me an ageist and a bigot, but 86 for a JUNIOR SENATOR is not ever a good idea! Period. If criticizing him for this as well as ALL the baggage he brings with him makes me “spirited age bigots and wanna be geriatricians” then so be it. Are you going to call me a racist white supremacist next like the left does for not agreeing with them? Fact is he is a terrible candidate. Love him but he is. The left thinks he’s great and celebrated him entering race hoping for another Alabama here in Arizona. I also cannot get him to talk to me about his platform other than Obama did me wrong and I supported Trump early on. If Arpaio, really cared about our state he would not be running. That is my opinion; and from what I hear and observe, the opinion of many others. I choose to vote for Kelli Ward based on her platform, energy and voting record. Kelli Ward is everywhere, up and down this state, earning every single vote (reminds me of Trump during the campaign) and as far as how much money she has or doesn’t have, we all should know money is not an indicator of one’s chance of winning, otherwise Hillary who spent billions would be our President and thank God she isn’t. Time to stop with the nastiness amongst us. The left clears the way for their candidate while the right destroys each other in the primaries. If we want to get nasty, follow Sinema on social media and tell the awful truth about her!
American Post-Gazette (Distributed by C O M M O N S E N S E in Arizona - May 9, 2018) DUCEY’S CAVING INVITES BENNETT CHALLENGE: Gov. Doug Ducey gave in to the #RedforEd 20% pay hike demand so fast everyone’s head was spinning. While other governors and legislatures around the country responded to teacher raises with a little more aplomb, Gov. Ducey dove headfirst into the deep end, leaving befuddled legislators gasping for air. That was enough to invite a primary challenge from former Secretary of State and Senate President Ken Bennett. In announcing his candidacy for governor,. Bennett said, “People deserve a choice.” He also said he agreed that teachers need raises, but disagreed with how Ducey was doing it. There is no real sustainable funding source—only speculation. Bennett is very familiar with state budgets. As Senate President he had an uphill climb dealing with then-Gov. Janet Napolitano who, in typical liberal Democrat fashion, never saw a tax hike she didn’t like and was more than willing to spend every dollar that came into the state coffers—and more. Napolitano was instrumental in putting the state in the worst financial position we’ve ever faced. She demanded, and got with the help of Democrats and RINOs, a dysfunctional, deep in the red budget that, coupled with the Great Recession, crippled our economy for years, forcing cuts to all government programs (cuts are not always a bad thing).
Bennett is also well-known for giving a great "tissue box" presentation of the state budget which makes it more understandable to us commoners. If he can do that, he really does understand state budgets. Bennett has been through that war and doesn’t want Arizona to repeat those mistakes, regardless of how robust the economy is now and in the foreseeable future (thank you, Donald Trump). Promising the education bureaucrats billions of dollars more based only on economic projections, as positive as they appear today, is no way to run a state.
No doubt, in an election year Ducey thought he was pushing aside any threats to his re-election by giving in to a reported “popular movement.” But he has not endeared himself to the conservative Republican base, who vote in larger numbers in primaries. And regardless of how much money he promises to teachers, the radical #RedforEd crowd and the socialist teachers’ union will never be satisfied nor will they ever vote for a Republican—even one who caves to their demands so readily.
Elections can change in a heartbeat (That’s about as fast as Ducey caved to the teachers). Bennett is facing another uphill battle. He’s late out of the gate and faces a formidable campaigner in Ducey who will be well-funded. He has a short window to get signatures to get his name on the ballot www.kenbennett.com He’s running as a publicly-funded, so-called Clean Elections candidate, which means by sometime in August he needs to get 4,000 electors to give him $5 so he can qualify for that. All of this is made possible because Gov. Ducey, who, just two months ago was virtually guaranteed re-election, stepped in it big time. People do deserve a choice. -J. Madison
Former Maricopa County Republican Chairman Lyle Tuttle: I recall Jim Weiers sitting outside Nappy's office for Ken Bennett to show up to meet with her to do battle over the budget....waiting and waiting...then out of her office came Bennett with Nappy and the deal was done.....not sure we need that kind of leadership!! I think I have a tee-shirt somewhere dealing with that issue...So what's the diff??? Looks like both could use some "Trump Coaching" on the "art of the deal"...
LD23 PC Van Berry: I'd like to address the absurd assessments from several Ward mustard bots that say, “Sinema is dumb as a box of rocks”. I'm the only PC in the state who actually got to study for the LSAT with Kyrsten Sinema as we had mutual friends at the time. I'm not an idiot as I've attended the US Air Force Academy, as well as one of the best Midwest liberal arts colleges and eventually received a degree in Economics. I was struggling with LSAT questions while Sinema was bored. She later went on to become a Law professor at ASU. I find it interesting that Kelli Ward has used Senate obstructionist Rand Paul (see his obstinate stance on the extremely capable woman CIA director he is personally holding up) as her earliest and best high profile endorsement.
I am probably the only PC and AZ State committeeman who has had the privilege of being a Team Leader on the AZ Border mission. I know better than most why #NoWALL Rand Paul is dead wrong with his opposition to the #TrumpWall. In fact, before Ward started making little catch phrases about “mixing mortar”, she and her main endorser shared similar Libertarian hands off views about being weak on a high, strong (and what they considered) too expensive #TrumpWall. She has since modified her view on the wall, but it shows how she will say just about anything that her pollsters or her high paid consultants tell her to say to maintain relevancy.
Sheriff Joe he is a man of conviction who was with Trump from the beginning. He doesn’t waiver and flip flop on issues like Ward did on the border, gun control, and abortion. I think it is time that we tell Kelli Ward, her bullying husband and her small but brash mustard colored Army to pack it in, but not because we don't want her to be a spoiler but because she is the weakest candidate regardless of where she is in any poll. It will be difficult for Sheriff Joe to beat a very strong Kyrsten Sinema, but at least with his strong state and national support he has a chance.

In The First Of What Many Believe Will Be Several Court Decisions, the U.S. District Court in Phoenix has ruled in favor of Arizona’s prohibition of the mass collection of voted early ballots and long-standing policy of not counting provisional ballots cast in the wrong precinct, according to Secretary of State Michele Reagan. The lawsuit filed by the Democratic National Committee, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and Arizona Democratic Party challenges Arizona’s effort to ensure election integrity and promote the secure delivery of voted ballots. “We’re pleased with the ruling but I think everyone involved recognizes this is only the first decision to be made by the courts,” said Reagan. “Next will be in San Francisco at the 9th Circuit and an eventual third at the U.S. Supreme Court. I think most people agree that Arizona should make it easy to vote and hard to cheat. These commonsense policies and procedures ensure people are voting for the candidates who represent them at the state, federal and local level as well as prevent political activists from collecting voted ballots. This time the court agreed and I’m hopeful we will continue to be successful as the case continues its journey towards a date with the highest court in the land."

Dr. Kelli Ward on President Trump's decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal and renew sanctions: "The Iran nuclear deal was fatally flawed from its conception. It provided a huge cash reward to one of the world's most vicious state sponsors of terrorism, it failed to mandate unimpeded, real-time inspections of Iran's nuclear facilities, and it allowed continued development of ballistic missiles specifically designed to deliver weapons of mass destruction. For the safety of Americans and people throughout the world, it is vital the radical government in Iran never be allowed to possess nuclear weapons. I am confident President Trump and his team, together with our allies, will focus on achieving this goal."

ELECTED OFFICIALS COMMENTARY
Congressman Andy Biggs: Congressman Biggs Praises President Trump for Return of Americans from North Korea President Donald Trump announced that North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un has agreed to release three unjustly imprisoned U.S. citizens: "I was pleased to learn North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un has agreed to free American citizens Kim Dong-chul, Tony Kim, and Kim Hak-song from North Korean custody. Two of these men had been held in captivity since last year, and one of them had been imprisoned since 2015. Thankfully, all three of these individuals appear to be in good health. In his foreign policy efforts, President Trump has consistently demonstrated the ability to peacefully negotiate from a position of strength and confidence. This latest good news from North Korea is a testament to the President’s persistence and a very encouraging development in the lead-up to further negotiations with Kim Jong-Un. Additionally, I would like to commend Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for his tireless work on the ground to secure this great outcome."
