6-15-18 Briefs

College Republicans United members will at the ICE Phoenix Field office in support of ICE officers between 3-5:30 pm., Fri., June 15 as a Pro-Open Border Group promotes human trafficking, putting children in danger, and separating families by protesting the ICE Phoenix Field office at 2035 N Cental Ave. in Phoenix. A CRU members said, “This is not acceptable here in Arizona and we need everyone to be there to stand for the protection of families and children by supporting our local ICE office. Americans believe that all families and children should be protected and encouraged to remain safe by removing incentives that promote parents risking the lives and safety of their children. We will not stand by silently as these radicals promote tearing apart families by encouraging parents to place their children in the hands of rapists, risk the death of the children or sexual enslavement simply to illegally cross our borders.”  Participants are urged to bring water and stay safe. Attention Republican Group Leaders: If your event announcement is not posted within 24 hours from the time you submitted it - Briefs did NOT receive it. Please resend it to either frostytaylor@cox.net or repcomm@cox.net. – Editor Frosty Taylor

NOTES FROM READERS

Opinions expressed by readers are not necessarily those of the Briefs. Commentary running over 400 words is subject to editing. Briefs posts candidate announcements, but does not endorse candidates, nor do we post endorsement statements. - ft.

AFA Team: We were surprised to see the situation in LD14 regarding the debate between two Superintendent Bob Branchcandidates, Dr. Robert Branch and Frank Riggs.  We support Dr. Branch's objectionFrank Riggs to having a clear supporter for Mr. Riggs as a presenter for the debate in LD14.  The entire Mommy Lobby supports Riggs (remember, these same people were champions for Douglas).  Having Jennifer Reynolds there was an inappropriate maneuver.  We get emails routinely from Jennifer expressing the endorsement (her words) of Riggs.  While we have great respect for Reynolds and all involved, a neutral person should have been invited to make a presentation, not a biased one.  It's a shame.  LD14 is the loser here.  We hope this decision will be reversed and the two candidates can debate each other on a level playing field.  Both are good candidates, but very different.  Voters deserve to see both of them. - www.arizonafreedomalliance.org

Jennifer_ReynoldsJennifer Reynolds, Mommy Lobby AZ member: I saw your 6-14-18-Briefs post and I would like to respond: It's amazing to see the lengths SPI candidate Dr. Robert Branch will go when he does not get his way. I told him repeatedly that I don't play political games nor will I participate in dirty politics. My work in Mommy Lobby AZ and as the founder of Arizonans Against Common Core has always been about restoring local control over education, protecting parental rights and providing for a great learning environment for future generations. I wonder even more now after these latest events, why is Bob Branch running?? I was asked to speak at the July LD14 meeting by Vice-Chair Bruce Piepho on the very issues I have been long fighting for and it was never about a specific candidate or another, nor the debate that was following after I spoke. I was asked to speak on specific topics including: "What in education is important to parents; Why is school choice popular; Why is homeschooling popular; Where is God in K-12 education, etc." Just because I happen to volunteer on Frank Riggs' campaign does not mean I'm taking over any meeting that I am asked to speak at. I am honest in my dealings with my fellowmen and I don't play these political games to win elections. Let all of us stay focused on the real issues at hand and work to fight for our children's futures.

Bob BranchRobert Branch, Supt Of Public Instruction Candidate: Yesterday, LD14 withdrew my invitation to participate in the Dr. Bob Branch/Frank Riggs debate scheduled for their July meeting. I have been scheduled for this debate since May 2. On June 6, LD14’s 4th Vice Chair Bruce Piepho - 2Bruce Piepho invited Jennifer Reynolds to make a presentation just prior to the start of the debate. I told Piepho that the invitation was not ethical because Reynolds (Mommy Lobby) helped recruit Riggs to run for this office, volunteers on Riggs’ campaign, openly uses her position to endorse Riggs, and appears side-by-side with Riggs in his April 30th campaign literature. Ethically, Piepho should have rescheduled Reynolds for another time. Piepho would not do that.

I reflected to Piepho’s May 4th email to Riggs saying, “Frank Riggs - You have some strong supporters here in LD14 namely Katie Miller.” Miller is LD14’s 1st Vice Chairwoman. Why has the LD 1st Vice Chair made it clear who she is backing in a contested Republican Primary, especially in an invitation to a debate? Do they have bylaws? Why did LD14 schedule, arguably, the biggest Riggs supporter to present before the start of this debate?

When I was the Chairman of LD13, I heard about this type of election shenanigans. So, I have been “hawkishly” looking out for it, especially running against the career politician, Riggs. When I saw the announcement that Reynolds was going to present, and Piepho would not cancel her presentation, I then knew the election shenanigans had begun. I then began copying the press on my emails, so everything is documented.

My position: This debate should set the candidates on an equal platform without a biased slant; unfortunately this is not the case as it stands. I have been scheduled since early May. I look forward to the debate, and I know that you will do the right thing. I will wait to hear from you as to whether you rescheduled Reynolds/The Mommy Lobby for another time or the debate. It is an "either/or," you ethically cannot have both. I am copying Frosty Taylor, MCRC Briefs editor, with this email. People around this state need to know if LD14 is ethical or up to “Election Shenanigans with the Riggs Campaign.” Riggs, who was copied on these emails by Piepho, replied by saying: “… Jennifer and I will be there.” - showing they are on the same team.

Riggs cannot win in a debate against me on an equal platform without a biased slant; it is unfortunate that the people of LD14 were denied seeing that debate. Editor’s Note: This letter has been condensed to conform with Briefs 400 word limit policy. – ft
