8-13-18 Briefs

LD14 senate candidate David Gowan’s exposes competitor Drew John’s Unpaid Federal Tax Liens. In a press released dated Aug 10, 2018 Gowan wrote: “I have been made aware that Representative John is several years delinquent in paying nearly $55,000 in taxes to the federal government and that it appears that he has failed to disclose these debts on his county and state financial disclosure forms as required by law. I am also aware that failure to disclose is a Class 6 felony. Much of our campaign for State Senate has centered on my record of cutting spending and cutting taxes compared to Drew’s record of increasing spending and voting for multiple tax increases, in violation of the “No New Tax” pledge that he signed just two years ago. To find out that the same man who eagerly raises everyone else’s taxes on purchases, gas, and vehicles, doesn’t pay his own taxes, is deeply disturbing. We all face challenges in life and I certainly appreciate that. But for a tax-hiking lawmaker to not pay his/her taxes and to conceal that violation of the law from the voters for years is simply wrong. Drew John needs to immediately amend his financial disclosure forms, tell the voters the full extent of his failure to pay his share, and inform the public how he intends to get right with the law and the taxpayers of his district.” Lien filings from the Graham County Recorder’s office accompanied Gowan’s statement. Several Center For Arizona Policy (CAP)-Supported Bills passed by the Arizona legislature and signed by Governor Ducey during the 2018 legislative session became effective on August 3. These measures specifically promote life, parental rights, educational opportunities, free speech, and religious freedom, according to CAP CEO Cathi Herrod.

Ministry friends, like yourself, have made these legislative victories possible!

·         SB 1393 Parental Right to Embryo gives in vitro embryos a better chance at life by requiring courts in a divorce proceeding to award in vitro embryos to the spouse that wants them for the purpose of having children.

·         SB 1394 Abortion Reporting improves abortion reporting requirements, and provides an opportunity for women who are being coerced into an abortion to get the help they need. This new law will become effective after December 31, 2018.

·         SB 1473 Child Safety shortens the time period to find forever homes for babies in the foster care system.

·         HB 2460 School Sale Equity gives private and charter schools a better chance at purchasing school district property that is for sale by prohibiting school districts from withdrawing a property for sale or lease solely because a private or charter school is the highest bidder.

·         HB 2461 School Zoning Equity makes sure private schools are not overburdened by local zoning ordinances, but instead are treated the same as charter schools in zoning acreage requirements.

·         HB 2563 Campus Free Speech strengthens free speech rights of college students at public universities and colleges.

·         HB 2536 Homeschool Dual Enrollment allows homeschool students to participate in the dual enrollment program and receive college credit. This bill became effective when it was signed by the Governor on March 29, 2018.

In addition to these CAP-supported bills, CAP successfully worked to oppose over 75 “bad bills” that undermined the foundational principles of life, marriage and family, and religious freedom.

AZGOP Republican National Committeewoman Lori Klein Corbin: Has anyone else not received their early ballot from the Maricopa County Recorders office? I am on the early voter list and have not received my ballot. My husband, Bob Corbin received his ballot on the 3rd of August. I called the recorders office and they said it takes five working days to receive the ballot and if it doesn’t not arrive by then to call again. So, it did not arrive and I still have not received my early mail-in ballot. Friday, I again called the recorders office to be told that they didn’t know what to do; the women I spoke to told her to hold while she spoke to her supervisor. She then said that they would send me another ballot in the mail and wait five days. She also added, would you like me to send your general ballot as well, which I replied, how can you do that when you don’t know who will win the primary and the general ballot is not printed yet. She had no answer and reiterated she was happy to send that along as well. I again, stated that is impossible. I was aghast at the stupidity first of all, but maybe she knows something that we don’t. Let’s hope not. She then backed off and said well ok, I’ll just sent you another ballot and if I happened to receive my old ballot to not fill it out. At this rate, I am going to have to walk it in. I did reveal that I was Republican National Committeewoman and that I am shocked how inefficient and inept they are down there as they could not even tell me where my ballot happens to be.

The USPS may be to blame, but it is very fishy. Has anyone else not received their ballot? This is very odd. Inquiring minds should wish to know how really inept our Maricopa Country recorders office is these days. I am all for putting the elections back in the hands of the Maricopa County Supervisors where it can be supervised in a non-partisan way by people who are trained properly and know what they are talking about. Something is screwy down there to offer the general ballot for November already. Maybe Soros and the democrat crew down there knows something that we don’t. It’s really not a laughing matter.

Yavapai County Activist Rick Hennessey: I would expect this out of Democrats but REPUBLICANS? The anti-Joe Arpaio pro-Kelli Ward’s have openly threatened me bodily harm for going after Ward and the video of her making a fool of herself! This is truly a new low in the Republican Party. Ward needs to come clean and step aside! If this is what the Conservative movement wants in the Senate you might as well write in Jeff Flake. The video speaks for itself and Kelly and her supporters can't defend it so they bury their head in the sand. Makes you wonder after all the year's these same people supported Sheriff Joe and condemned Obama. Now they throw Joe under the bus and support someone who is obviously not fit for office. It's a Sad Day In Arizona Politics.

Former Maricopa County Republican Chairman Lyle Tuttle: Dozens of corporations donate to the Center for American Progress, Hispanic Federation, UnidoesUS, League of United Latin American Citizens, National Urban League, and the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. All of these groups back sanctuary cities and illegal immigration. Below are several corporations which donate to two or more of these organizations:
Bank of America
HBO (Time Warner)
Jiffy Lube (Shell)
McDonald’s
Universal Pictures (Comcast)
Marriott International
Let these companies know that they must stop letting criminals off the hook. Let them know that they should put victims above criminals, not the other way around.

Former Maricopa County Republican Chairman Lyle Tuttle responds to Randy Miller’s comments 8-10-18 Briefs “ At a recent meeting, Lesko was asked what she thought about our liberties being violated under NDAA and the issue of indefinite detention. Lesko said ‘I'll talk with you after the meeting and you can contact me at my office.’”

All I can say to that is "GOOD LUCK!!" This is the response I received to my question (twice asked) starting last May, for a list of the items included in the tariffs 8-9-18 Briefs STILL no answer!! I guess she’s too busy campaigning??  Of course, her staff can't campaign (or are they??), although I understand a complaint about that (Hatch Act) has been filed.  Care to comment about that, Lisa Gray?? I asked a simple question, the answer is this campaign letter!

Dear Mr. Tuttle, I want to update you on an issue that may be of interest to you—career and technical education. Thanks to pro-growth policies like the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, there are currently more jobs available than people looking for work. This is great news for American workers and the economy, but many of these jobs will continue to go unfilled because there are not enough workers with the necessary skills and training. Presently, the American workforce faces a shortage of 6 million skilled workers – a number expected to reach 11 million by 2022. That is why I supported the passage of the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act, so even more Americans are able to access high-quality jobs. This bill gives states and local schools more flexibility to connect students with job training. The American economy is growing, and we need to ensure that our education system is supporting the workforce needs of the future. That is why I supported this bill to close the skills gap by training the next generation of high-skilled workers. On July 31, 2018, President Donald Trump signed this bill into law. For more information about federal issues or if you need assistance with a federal agency, you can contact my Washington D.C. office at (202) 225-4576 or my District office at (623) 776-7911.To stay informed on how I am representing you in Congress, I highly encourage you to sign up for my e-newsletter on my website at www.Lesko.house.gov.

CANDIDATE COMMENTARY

Editor’s Note: Please keep opinion pieces to 400 words. If extended, they will be subject to editing. Opinions expressed below are not necessarily those of the Briefs. Briefs does not endorse candidates. – ft

Dr Bob Branch, Supt Of Public Education Candidate: Chris DeSimon, the host of “Wake up Tucson”- 1030 AM KVOI has endorsed me on the air. Chris is the voice of conservative talk radio in Tucson, and it is my honor to have that endorsement. President Trump is keeping his promise to “Make America Great Again,” so now we need to do our part, and “Keep America Great.” However, to “Keep America Great, we need to educate.”  We need to fix Arizona’s failed education system once and for all. We need to follow President Trump’s roadmap to success. President Trump’s roadmap to “Keep America Great” is simple to follow: elect or hire the most qualified person for the job; not the career politician. In fact, President Trump told us to “Drain the Swamp!” For the job of Superintendent of Public Instruction, I am the most accomplished candidate to run for this position in generations. I am a veteran, business leader, business owner; and in education, my unparalleled academic administrative expertise includes:  Campus Director, Dean of Education, Dean of Technology, Chair of the School of Business and Information Technology, and the Content Chair for the Doctorate of Management in Information System Technology program. I teach at the #1 and #2 Christian Universities in the world.
Chris DeSimon, and thousands across this state, know that I am the person that can fix our failed education system. See
branch for Superintendent of public instruction My message is currently on the airwaves all across this state, but I need your support to keep my message on the radio until Election Day.

LD18 Senate candidate Frank Schmuck: The Ahwatukee Foothills News recently published a front page (above the fold) story entitled LD18 fundraising hottest for election coming this fall. Congratulations! Together, with the people of Arizona, we've out-raised my opponent, every step of the way. Today is the last day of this reporting period to donate. Interesting to note this article did NOT report, however, that my opponent, Sean Bowie, has received more than $23,000 from more than 150 donors in San Francisco and other parts of northern California for an Arizona State Senate race. C lick here to see for yourself all of them so far. Will you help stop the liberal California creep in Arizona by donating to our campaign? Many voters are scratching their heads and saying "He did what?" They are asking what promises has Sean Bowie made to these Californians for taking their money? Why has he had to travel to San Francisco on several occasions and why are there no expense reports showing this travel despite evidence indicating such? Does Bowie support allowing non residents to vote in our elections like San Francisco or will he vote to double our income taxes making us like California? Why can't Bowie raise money for his campaign in Arizona? Just who does he really represent? Email Bowie and ask him why? sean@seanbowieforaz.com If there is one thing I learned as an Air Force Academy graduate, a pilot in the military and as a Captain for Southwest Airlines, it’s the importance of accountability. You deserve to have a State Senator who is accountable to you.  We can do better, and that’s why I’m running. As your next State Senator, I will work to find real solutions to improve education in our state. I’ll take the lead on improving education in our district and our state, because that's what I've done in our district. And I’ll always put my constituents and the people of Arizona first.

Secretary of State candidate Steve Gaynor: Arizona’s Secretary of State’s office is a mess. Poor management, botched execution and general incompetence have plagued our elections. It’s clear we need a change; I’ve promised to run the office more like a business and clean up the mess. As you may know, about two months ago, Secretary of State Reagan made a settlement with two liberal groups making it easier for illegal immigrants to vote. Unbelievable? It’s true. This video tells the story: botched If I am elected, I will do everything in my power to reverse Reagan’s settlement. Our team has been working hard to ensure the office gets new leadership and the response has been amazing. With 17 days until the primary, we can feel the momentum everywhere we go.  It is because of amazing supporters like you that our campaign is within striking distance of winning on August 28th. Thanks for your support.

Phoenix Mayoral Candidate Moses Sanchez: It's official: Thanks to your help and the work of amazing volunteers throughout this city, we filed over 3,100 signatures to qualify for the Phoenix mayoral election in November! It meant everything to have my father and my wife Maria there with me to turn in our petitions. This campaign has been dedicated to standing up for Phoenix families, and having my family's love and support has kept me going through the long days and nights on the campaign trail. Qualifying for the ballot is a huge step, but now we need to keep taking our message to the Phoenix families who are ready for a change in the status quo. Can you pitch in to help us reach out to voters and let them know why our campaign will stand up for them? Nobody will outwork our campaign, but we need your help to continue sharing our platform and why we need an outsider at City Hall. Thank you for all of your support and encouragement, let's keep our momentum going! MosesSanchez.com

Gubernatoral candidate Ken Bennett: With just three weeks to go before the primary election, Bennett still needs 900 contributions to qualify for funding from the Clean Elections Commission. Bennett has all of the qualifications to be an outstanding governor.
He also doesn't need on the job training like the present governor, who was elected by kowtowing to the Koch Brothers and their money machine. Bennett was elected to the Prescott City Council in 1985 and served as Mayor
Pro Tem in 1988. He was appointed to the Arizona State Board of Education in 1992, serving as president in 1996 and 1998. In 1998 he was elected to the Arizona State Senate, serving four two-year terms, the second as Chairman of the Education Committee, and the third and fourth as President of the Senate (2003–2007). When Jan Brewer ascended from Arizona Secretary of State to Governor upon Janet Napolitano's resignation to become United States Secretary of Homeland Security, Bennett was selected as the new Secretary of State, being sworn in on January 26, 2009. Upon completing that term, Bennett won election to a full term as Secretary of State in the November 2010 with 59% of the vote. Also see Arizonans Want to Help Ken Bennett Get Elected Governor and Rid of Ducey - Christine Bauserman - Campaign Manager, Bennett for Arizona, 520-235-2234

Flagstaff House candidate Stuart McDaniel: Early voting is in process right now. As a Republican and Independent, you have until August 17th to request an early ballot by mail. (Yes, Independent's can vote in the primary election!) Early ballots must be mailed out by August 22nd! These options are still doable! If you are unable to vote early, please come out on Arizona's Primary Election Day, August 28th, and Vote Stuart McDaniel for Arizona House of Representatives! Also, please consider making a donation today. Every little bit helps to continue fighting for conservative values in rural Arizona! We also have yard signs which are a tremendous help in getting my name out in the community. Contact me here if you would like a sign delivered.

CD1 candidate Wendy Rogers: Here is a quick update about the campaign. Wendy has always been in first place but is now in an even stronger first place position according to our internal polling. This means she is on track. There is a lot of movement down in the polls for the other candidate in 2nd place. Because of Wendy's 50-stop barnstorming tour around Arizona's 1st District, we have forced the Democrat to actually campaign for once. Wendy has an airplane; Democrat leftist Tom O'Halleran was forced to get an RV! The Democrat has already purchased ad time for September and October - around $200K in ad buys. We have made several ads and EACH ad already hits O'Halleran (even though the primary won't be over until August 28th). As Wendy travels this huge district (the size of Pennsylvania), future constituents are already handing her veterans packets to investigate when she gets to Congress because the VA isn't doing their job.The entire balance of the House of Representatives will most likely come down to Arizona's 1st District. Either we have a Republican Speaker of the House, or we have Nancy Pelosi. Wendy just went on the radio talking about this very topic. She explained that we have the Senate, we have the Presidency, and we have the Supreme Court, but if we lose the House not only will the Trump America First Agenda be stopped cold, we will hear nothing but impeachment hearings from Pelosi for the next two years. That is why it is imperative for Wendy to stay on the radio. She is on TV, but our radio ends tonight if we do not raise another $4,500 by midnight tonight. We must beat the Democrats and flip this Trump district back to Republican! Pitch in - Spence Rogers, Wendy's General Manager

ELECTED OFFICIALS COMMENTARY

Editor’s Note: Please keep opinion pieces to 400 words. If extended, they will be subject to editing. Opinions expressed below are not necessarily those of the Briefs. Briefs does not endorse candidates. – ft

Phoenix City Councilman Sal DiCiccio: As part of the five-year South Mountain Trails and Preserve Master Plan, Desert Foothills and Beverly Canyon are each having $1.1 million invested for improvements. Funding comes from proceeds from a small sales tax authorized by Phoenix voters through the Phoenix Parks and Preserves Initiative. A new trail is planned to run between Pima Canyon and Desert Foothills called the Guadalupe Loop Perimeter Trail. New modern flush toilets will replace a group of portable toilets at Desert Foothills. A new ramada will be built closer to the trailhead, located on the south side of the park off Desert Foothills Boulevard. Beverly Canyon will have a repaved parking lot and two new ramadas added. Other improvements will include better signage including highlighting the locations of historic artifacts.

Secretary of State Michele Reagan: Did you know that the Arizona Secretary of State’s office runs a website that makes it easier for Arizonans to find out information related to voting and elections in Arizona? www.Arizona.vote provides comprehensive details on things such as voter registration, polling places, election dates, early ballot return statistics, and what to bring with you to the polls.

Congresswoman Debbie Lesko: Last week was been a busy week here in Arizona. On Tues. Aug 7 - Purple Heart Day- we reflect on those who were wounded or killed in service to their country. I attended the National Purple Heart Day Lunch in Glendale where I met Larry Leighton – the National Patriot of the Year for the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Thank you to the brave men and women, past and present, who fought to protect our nation and our way of life. A grateful nation thanks and honors you. It was a pleasure speaking at the Surprise Regional Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday. Garrick Taylor with the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry and I participated in a "Fireside Chat". We talked about tax reform, border security, and trade and what it means for Arizona. I will continue to support pro-growth policies that create an environment where businesses in Arizona's Eighth District can grow and thrive. Click here live-stream on Facebook.  I met with community leaders from Anthem Community Council, Anthem City Council Board of Directors, and the New River/Desert Hills Community Association. At our round table, we discussed some critical issues facing the North Valley including improvements to the I-17 corridor and Daisy Mountain preservation. Recently, I sent a bipartisan letter to U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao supporting the BUILD Grant application submitted by the Arizona Department of Transportation to make improvements to I-17. Read more here.  I was honored to be invited by the Assyrian American Community of Arizona to observe the Annual August 7th Assyrian Martyr’s Day in Glendale. Each year, this day is set aside to remember the many Assyrians who were persecuted because of their faith and cultural identity.
