4-15-18 Briefs

ALERT: Arizona Citizens Defense League (AzCDL) Chairman Dave Kopp: Roughly a month dave kopp 2ago Governor Ducey, in reaction to the Parkland school shooting, floated his "Safer Arizona Schools" proposal to address potential school violence.  The proposal called for "emergency" firearms confiscations using low evidentiary standards with virtually no recourse or appeals.  The expectation was that this was going to quickly proceed through the legislature. Enter AzCDL.  Your almost 37,000 emails changed the tone at the Capitol.  We thank everyone who took the time to contact their legislators.  You made a difference.  The Governor's office has reached out to AzCDL to discuss changes to the proposed legislation.  Our meetings have been productive.
Steve Smith CD1 candidate 2017     On Wednesday, April 11, the Senate invoked a special rule allowing Senator
Steve Smith (R-LD11) to introduce SB 1519, an improved version of Governor Ducey's "Safer Arizona Schools" proposal.  Senate President Steve Yarbrough (R-LD17) co-sponsored the legislation.  Steve Yarbrough 17 - Sen PresThe Senate Commerce and Public Safety (COMPS) Committee is expected to hold a public hearing on SB 1519 this coming week.
We remain opposed to SB 1519 as filed.  There are several inconsistencies and insufficient protections for someone facing confiscation of their firearms, along with an involuntary mental health evaluation, based on a petition filed with the courts.  However, the Governor's office has been working with AzCDL and concerned legislators.  They have assured us that an amendment will be filed during the COMPS committee hearing that addresses the issues we raised.  Assuming our issues are addressed, it will represent significant and positive improvements over the original proposal and we will drop our objections to the legislation.
Help us help you.  The COMPS committee hearing was originally scheduled for Monday, April 16.  It is our understanding that it will be rescheduled for later in the week, possibly Wednesday.  Let's fill the hearing room.  If you can attend this important hearing, please contact Dave Kopp at Once the hearing has been rescheduled, we will ask everyone with an active RTS account to voice your opinion on SB 1519 to the COMPS committee.  Stay tuned.

SB1519 ALL HANDS ON DECK CALL TO ACTION: This bill is without doubt the worst bill introduced this session and a good contender for worst ever bill. It is clearly a case of knee jerk reaction and a rush to “do something” without first taking into account all the ramifications of hastily enacting such a dangerous piece of legislation. We at the AZRRT are not lawyers, and we are aware that laws are not considered unlawful until they are tested by the courts. But from the perspective of concerned citizens, the current language in SB1519 is a clear violation of both the search and seizure clause of the 4th amendment and the due process clause of the 14th amendment.
As introduced, this bill needs to be soundly defeated. Please state your opinion via the Request to Speak System and contact all legislators to let them know your concerns about SB1519. Do it now, before you get involved in something else and forget to do it. This can easily done by going to

cathi herrodCenter for AZ Policy CEO Cathi Herrod: Arizona Governor Doug Ducey signed CAP-supported bill SB 1394 to update and enhance Arizona’s abortion reporting laws. Sponsored byNancy Barto ld15 Sen. Nancy Barto, this new law will provide critical data to state policymakers and interested parties as they seek to improve the health and wellbeing of Arizonans. Good policy requires good data. Arizonans are grateful to the pro-life leadership of Gov. Ducey, Sen. Barto, and a majority of pro-life state legislators. Please take time to send a quick thank you. tom morrisseyAuthor Tom Morrissey: "The Way Of The Shadow Wolves" made Amazon's Native American Literature Best Sellers List for the first time. Out of 50,000 books, it is at #51 on Kindle and #72 on paperback. The rankings are kept current (on an hourly basis) and there's no telling how long that will last. We are now working on getting the book into the brick and mortar stores of Barnes and Noble and Walmart and if we get enough readers requesting it at those stores it will make it so much easier (wink wink, nudge, nudge) to get done. Again, thanks to you all for helping us get here.

rob haneyArizona conservative Catholic Political Activist Rob Haney told The Wanderer on April 11: “The confusion was a long time building without a course correction. Francis has just immensely accelerated the heterodoxy. I must confess that when Francis appears on TV, I react as though Senators Chuck Schumer or John McCain had appeared, and I hit the mute button or switch channels because I believe I am about to be embarrassed by what Francis says or scolded for my orthodox beliefs. “The Pope’s latest exhortation resurrects (Joseph) Cardinal Bernardin’s previously discredited ‘seamless garment’ argument in order to place the fundamental pro-life issue on the same plane as the prudential migration issue. It blurs these significantly different categories into one continuum and devalues the pro-life doctrine,” Haney said. “The exhortation is also in violation of the Catholic doctrine of subsidiarity, which states that governmental decisions should be made at the lowest level possible for the common good. In no way would admitting into your country millions of aliens of a different moral, religious, and cultural heritage with no desire to assimilate result in the common good. We need only look at California and Europe to see how an example of the Pope’s exhortation has turned out. When the Faith survives Francis’ reign as One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, it will truly be a confirmation of God’s promise to protect His Church,” he said. See Capitulation Doesn’t Work . . . For Ryan And GOP, Nor For The Pope On Immigration Editor’s Note: Haney is a former, two-term Maricopa County Republican Committee Chairman.

kelli ward 2018 aUS Senate candidate Dr Kelli Ward: We are sick and tired of politicians who say one thing on the campaign trail and change when they get to DC. Kelli Ward will change DC, not let DC change her. Ward is running for Arizona Senate to solve real problems for Americans in her state and around the country. She's running because for years Arizona has had two Senators who say they are conservative yet act like Democrats when they are in DC. With one of those Senators Jeff Flake retiring it is time to elect a true conservative who will uphold our values and will fight for We The People! Kelli is being attacked by the establishment daily and needs the grassroots to help her win! Will you support a conservative who says what she means and won't give in to Democrats? Ward represented conservative principles as a former state politician. She worked to control the border and stop Arizona cities from becoming sanctuaries.  She fought against Obamacare because as an emergency room physician she saw up close how much Obamacare had hurt families and doctors. But more importantly she kept her promises. If she said she would vote one way she did.  She won't talk about reducing the debt and vote for a bloated budget like many Republicans.  She won't talk about securing the border and vote with Democrats against the border wall like the Senator she is replacing.  She is a principled conservative who will do what she promises. Washington D.C. needs more women like Kelli Ward!

Martha McSally 3US senate candidate Martha McSally: An appropriate role for our National Guard - This is not the first time it’s been done. There is an appropriate role for our National Guard to be supporting civil authorities, especially given the slow-rolling and obstructionism that we’ve seen.
